  1. I'm still tweaking to find out what the best values are... the values that show the best detail at the least performance cost. Bethesda just threw high values in the similar settings, which I have copied for now, but lowering them to a more sane value may improve performance at no visual cost.
  2. Error Code 5 is typically a permissions issue. Try and see if running as admin fixes the issue. My guess is a temporary directory does not have the correct permissions.
  3. https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide_talk:Troubleshooting Fixed the link. It appears there is considerable content on the talk page that typically is not put on a talk page. Strange. I wouldn't trust it, to be honest. It all looks considerably outdated. I have not tested Papyrus tweaks. fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS is the only one I would change as of now, setting it to its correct default value of 2000.
  4. Discussion thread: Skyrim Tree Settings Guide by STEP Wiki Link This thread is for discussion and improvement of the Skyrim Tree Settings Guide on the wiki. Guide scope This guide is intended to be a guide to the tree configuration settings for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim game as set through INI files. Its purpose is geared toward understanding how trees work in Skyrim and optimizing them for individual use. I was going to make this into a thread but decided it was better suited on the wiki.
  5. I created these videos a while ago, and finally uploaded them to Youtube for your viewing pleasure. Most are linked on the INI guides, but I think one or two are not. Skyrim.ini Smooth sun-shadow transitions fSunShadowUpdateTime sets the speed of sun-shadow transitions in seconds. It is recommended to be adjusted to minimize the transitions. fSunUpdateThreshold sets the time between sun-shadow transitions. A value of 0.05 is equal to 1 second, so a value of 1 equals 20 seconds. Increasing this also increases the distance the shadows will move during the transition. It is recommended to be adjusted to minimize the transitions. Default Sun Shadows fSunShadowUpdateTime=1 fSunUpdateThreshold=0.5 STEP Tweaked Sun Shadows fSunShadowUpdateTime=0.25 fSunUpdateThreshold=1.5 Other Various Tweaked Sun Shadows fSunShadowUpdateTime=0 fSunUpdateThreshold=0 fSunShadowUpdateTime=1 fSunUpdateThreshold=0 fSunShadowUpdateTime=0 fSunUpdateThreshold=2 fSunShadowUpdateTime=0.5 fSunUpdateThreshold=0.05 fSunShadowUpdateTime=0.5 fSunUpdateThreshold=1 fSunShadowUpdateTime=1 fSunUpdateThreshold=1 fSunShadowUpdateTime=2 fSunUpdateThreshold=0.5
  6. It is linked text, linking to the ENBlocal INI guide.
  7. It looks like you answered your own question.
  8. I discovered a whole new world of tree INI settings which I have gone through great lengths to express in the INI guides. Note the following settings: Skyrim.ini [Trees] bEnableTreeAnimations=1 bEnableTrees=1 fUpdateBudget=0 SkyrimPrefs.ini [Display] fMeshLODLevel1FadeTreeDistance=2844 fMeshLODLevel2FadeTreeDistance=2048 fTreesMidLODSwitchDist=10000000 [TerrainManager] fTreeLoadDistance=25000 [Trees] bRenderSkinnedTrees=1 uiMaxSkinnedTreesToRender=20 Be advised that there are two tree systems in the game. The default system is sort of a deferred rendering of the trees that enables tree animations, tree pop-in, and tree-specific LOD settings. The other system makes trees behave as static models like everything else. I intend to make a tree optimization thread eventually explaining all this, as the trees do play a significant role in performance. You can get an idea in the guides, as most all the information is there. https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Skyrim_INI/Trees https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:SkyrimPrefs_INI
  9. bMouseAcceleration=0 is a bogus tweak. It never did anything and is unrecognized by the game. fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000 is included in the Unofficial Skyrim Patch plugin INI, so it was removed from the tweaks, since that makes it redundant.
  10. That is fine. Find all the rules here: https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Skyrim_Configuration_Settings#INI_syntax
  11. iHWThread4 et. al. are leftovers from the older games and do not appear to be employed in Skyrim. Only iNumHWThreads appears to be used. You can set iNumHWThreads to 8 since you have 8 CPU threads. Let me know if that improves performance or not, as I have not been able to test that, since I only have 4 threads, which is the default value. Don't set the INI files to read-only. That can only cause problems in Skyrim. Backup your INIs if you're afraid they are going to be overwritten.
  12. That is perfectly safe to do, although it is rather a meaningless exercise. If you do that to SkyrimPrefs.ini, the next time you change the in-game settings, they will revert to using decimal points.
  13. The SkyrimPrefs INI Guide is now complete! :hurr: Of note, according to my testing, the specularity fade settings do not appear to work. If anyone can get it to do something, I'd be obliged. The same can be said of any settings highlighted in yellow.
  14. Ah! That's because setting DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB to 1024 makes the 768 the crash/freeze limit, which is exactly what I thought was happening. Increase it to a higher value. It will always be 256 less than DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB.
  15. I think you either installed the Memory Patch wrong, or need to increase the values in order for it to work correctly. Safety Load is a band-aid.
  16. This tweak has a nice effect on distant light. It is similar to the grass fade range tweak, so it might eliminate light pop-in. Adjust light fade range fLightLODRange sets how far away light will fade from the start fade distance (fLightLODStartFade, which is Light Fade in the in-game Settings > Display menu). It is recommended to set it to 50000. fLightLODRange=500 (Default) fLightLODRange=20000 fLightLODRange=50000 (Recommended) Skyrim.ini [Display] fLightLODRange=50000
  17. LOL. That's effectively what setting it to 0 does.
  18. Random intriguing setting I just figured out: Skyrim.ini [LOD] fTalkingDistance=2000fTalkingDistance sets the distance away from the player that NPCs can move their lips fully while speaking. Default is 2000.
  19. Not as far as I can tell.
  20. If anybody can figure out what fLeafAnimDampenDistStart and fLeafAnimDampenDistEnd do, let me know. I've tested them to exhaustion and cannot for the life of me figure out what they do. I thought they might control falling leaves in Riften, but they don't. I thought they might "dampen" tree animations, but they don't. I'm at my wits end, and the settings were added with Skyrim, and I find it hard to believe that they do nothing. The descriptions of what they do around the net are bogus, that much is for sure. Any other place where I might find leaf animations?
  21. Increasing fShadowBiasScale in SkyrimPrefs.ini helps as well.
  22. If every day was foggy and cloudy, that would work well.
  23. This guide is now complete in its entirety with exception of the [Display] section.
  24. It sounds like you forgot to make sure you were "ready" to get your houses, and cheated around it.
