Octopuss Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Don't fall for the max wattage nonsense. Just don't. 290x is roughly 250W on average. Yes it can hit way over 300 (like close to 400), but that's in unrealistic scenarios, like running FurMark. There, look.700W PSU (if it's good brand, like Fortron, Seasonic etc.) is totally enough. It's easy to check what's going on, just keep GPU-Z running and check it from time to time (it assumes you know the default and boost clocks, of course). And check those temperatures as well.Another great monitoring program is HWiNFO, I use it for everything else.I am not entirely sure what's supposed to happen with too high power draw, but I'd guess it would rather be a crash, a BSOD, or a freze rather than downlocking. 290 is still new platform, it might be a driver problem. Latest Catalyst is 13.12, if you don't have it I suggest you grab it.
Nearox Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 https://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp Completely agree with Octopuss.
redirishlord Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I had Nvidia's latest (beta) driver & am running a Corsair RM750. For the 27 minute romp my CPU load averaged 21% and GPU 74%. Just throwing those fun facts out there, not debating the groups conclusions.
