[Q] first time MO user need some halp. :)
GrantSP replied to supermegaukulele's question in Mod Organizer Support
I have never migrated an install from NMM so I have no 1st hand knowledge of how easy/difficult it is, but I can say if you have all your downloads already the actual installation of your mods is very easy when using MO. -

[Q] first time MO user need some halp. :)
GrantSP replied to supermegaukulele's question in Mod Organizer Support
Welcome to STEP and to the MO forum. May I suggest you acquaint yourself with the MO wiki. Also there a wealth of instructional videos that show the steps necessary. MO manages mods in a very different manner to ALL other mod managers so you will need to do some legwork before you get into using it, but there are instructions and utilities inside MO to aid you. The basic principle of MO is that NOTHING is actually installed into the game's folders, hence everything you currently have in your NMM install will be moved out to 'clean' the game folder. -

If Steam, and all your tools, see Skyrim installed correctly yes, all you have to do is clean them again. -

If any of the files are different, or missing, then those files are re-acquired. However as you have moved your current install you may face issues with Steam. You mentioned your tools aren't working because the registry setting is broken, you should revert to the previous setup and remove only files that don't belong and let Steam 'fix' any broken files. 6Gb+ is a lot I know, I used to be on a very restrictive internet service and it was a big issue for me. The flipside though is having a broken game will be an even bigger hardship I feel. Anytime you try and move stuff that is managed by online software checks, such as Steam, it will think that you are either pirating it or trying to circumvent some protection of the files. End result is a broken game, but for good reasons. -

GrantSP replied to Thick8's question in General Skyrim LE Support
If what the highlighted text says is true then the same effect will be gained by removing the content and allowing Steam to 'verify the local content'. This will have the added bonus of keeping a working Steam installation, thus avoiding the issues you now see with tools not seeing your now broken Skyrim install. You want to maintain a clean "vanilla" Skyrim install and allow MO to manage all your mods, thus avoiding all the issues of having to re-install Skyrim when problems happen. -
Keep in mind the prices here are in AU$ not the 'good ol' greenback'! A Radeon HD 7970 is about AU$460 at the moment. As for cases the Corsair is big enough and the HAF series are currently twice the price of it and only marginally bigger. My rationale is to get the biggest 'bang for buck' in the video card I can justify and the R9 390 fits that bill at the moment. The biggest problem I face now is having this build pushed back till late Sept. Massive plumbing bill for essential works on our water supply has just come in and the missus is feeling the pinch. Ah well.

MO 1.3.8 does not hook OBSE Plugins at all
GrantSP replied to adelinadragonborn's question in Mod Organizer Support
Yes there may be a way for the Oblivion game engine, and OBSE plugins, to be hooked but that will require a complete re-write of the code-base for the Oblivion plugin. This isn't something high on the list of priorities for the author of MO. All the code is available for others to see and change if they desire, but I wouldn't hold my breath. For non-Steam users the methods used currently work very well. As @hishutup mentions though there are other issues that afflict the Steam version.- 10 replies

ACCEPTED Audio Overhaul for Skyrim (by David Jegutidse)
GrantSP replied to Neovalen's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
Is this true even with the advances made to it by @thosrtanner in the latest builds? He is taking a great deal of care to work through all these peculiarities and fix them. I bet he'd like to get some input on any further changes that need to be made. -

I can't see how BSAs being extracted or not would produce an error with FOSE, so no, not related. -
Followed Guide game wont launch Help!
GrantSP replied to adzc1987's question in Guide Support & Bug Reports
Can either of you post the text of the error message about FOSE missing, or otherwise tell which mod is generating it? The fact that even non-MO games are broken after this message concerns me. This means there are changes being made to vanilla files: ini or menu assets or missing BSAs. How that happens is beyond me with what we are working with here at the moment. -

GUIDE General Oblivion Support
GrantSP replied to hishutup's question in Guide Support & Bug Reports
Okay, didn't find what I was looking for but I may have found the culprit. When you use WB it is loading the Archive Invalidation mod and therefore adding the line: sArchiveList=ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa, to the end of the list of options in the [Archive] section. Nearly correct. So, what needs to be there is this: sArchiveList=ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa, Oblivion - Meshes.bsa, Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa, Oblivion - Sounds.bsa, Oblivion - Voices1.bsa, Oblivion - Voices2.bsa, Oblivion - Misc.bsa The comma on its own breaks the ini, as these can't be on the ends of lines and according to the documentation for Archive invalidating the entire list of BSAs for the game also need to added to the list. So check the ini tweak in WB that is used for that mod and change it make the correct entries and see if that works. It should.- 459 replies

GUIDE General Oblivion Support
GrantSP replied to hishutup's question in Guide Support & Bug Reports
Excellent, thank you, that settles that minor detail. Can you zip your ini up and post the link, I want to examine the file itself, not just the contents. Running with a long shot here.- 459 replies

If I may use a motoring analogy? Many car owners may be able to change the oil, check tyre pressure, even replace a spark plug. Not everyone would be able to change an oil filter, adjust the timing or increase turbo boost, not to mention machining heads, upgrading camshafts or valves. Without it sounding derogatory, many would-be STEP users are in fact imagining they can upgrade their camshaft when their skills revolve around changing oil. Can it be done by a novice? Yes. On the first try without assistance? Unlikely. That's not the market for the guide. Having said that, the STEP forums, not the guide, do offer those services and you will find very in-depth discussions on some very detailed modding techniques. So it is quite possible for the new modder to install STEP if they are willing to do a bit of forum searching to find the answers, and if they can't find them ask and be guided as best as they can be.

The message in red inside MO isn't saying you have a 'problem' just that the mod you installed contains the same files as in the "Unmanaged" mods, ie Dawnguard, Hearthfires, etc. Conflicts don't of themselves constitute a problem, only the fact the files are provided by more than one mod. You mentioned installing "English Strings for Skyrim", from the description on that mod's page I would say it isn't what you want. Off the top of my head I can't think of any specific mods other than the Unofficial Patches that make changes to the book's contents. The mod "Main Font Replacement" though might have 'borked' your fonts ingame, re-examine the installation of that mod.

GUIDE General Oblivion Support
GrantSP replied to hishutup's question in Guide Support & Bug Reports
The 'installer' version listed first in the downloads page can install both versions, depending on your choice in the installer if I remember correctly. Since you do say you have the standalone version then I'll take your word for it. Been so long since I saw any WB errors they may still refer to the Python code. Still I'll stand by the permissions issue, why though is something you will have to find out. I can't see where you have these tools installed so just to be sure, try and avoid ANY folder that might have Windows UAC on it. I seem to recall @Hishutup mentioning that on his system Win10 was very troublesome even on folders that should be free of that control.- 459 replies

Mod Organizer and Steam no longer working together?
GrantSP replied to TheGlassesGirl's question in Mod Organizer Support
So just to be clear, all your issues were resolved when you disabled the firewall? -
The 'complicated' steps should be addressed first. Since you say you are using MO's internal 'Sort' function there is clearly now an issue with your MO installation. Examine the points @Tannin has listed and please provide any logs or messages that MO gives.

Depends on the mods. Some will have no influence on other mods, some will. Merging is highly recommended and should always be looked at, even if you don't actually know how to merge, finding out about it helps in understanding how your mods interact with each other. There may be some issues with multiple mods all affecting the same game mechanics, as in 'Combat mods'. You will need to be very observant as to what each says it changes. Modding can very quickly overtake your playing. Set a task for yourself and stick to it. Many, many modders haven't 'played' the game in months/years due to constant tweaking/adding/removing/improving/breaking/fixing the game. Be strong and 'stick to your guns'.

My two cents worth. For every person that completes the guide without error there is next to no feedback from them because, why would there? On the other hand for every person that does have difficulties it is because of a misunderstanding of the description or the steps leading up to that process, everytime that happens the guide is examined and a revision of the wording is looked at. However, more often than not the wording is clear and the reader assumed something. Can the guide fix that? Maybe, and the STEP authors endeavour to do so. STEP is a fluid guide, meaning it is always in a state of change which means new steps may need to examined in the light of previous ones and also how it reflects on later ones. Which brings us to videos. Everytime a new mod is included the whole section would need to be updated to reflect the change in order otherwise users will flood the forum with: "where does this go, the video doesn't mention it!" The steps involved with maintaining a working complete video guide would overwhelm the maintenance of the guide itself. Then there is the thought that every detail needs to be outlined. Yes and no. Most steps involving mod installation are the same for numerous mods so once the user has done the first, the steps are repeated for similar mods. Where there is divergence from the standard, STEP provides notes and detailed instruction to reflect that, or it tries to. Lastly the comments about length of time to complete. You will usually find that those that say it doesn't take too long are like @Greg that already have most of the mods downloaded. This is far and away the most time-consuming part of installation. After the downloads are sought, the steps to install again are significantly shorter. Am I trying to dismiss user feedback about the complexity of the guide? No, simply highlighting the points that some slip up on are often not due to wording or instructions, but a sense of being overwhelmed with content. All feedback is appreciated and examined for action.
