There's a reason I open up my laptops and snip the cables leading to the microphone and the webcam. I'll use an external one for greater quality and only plug it in if I'm using it thanks. Also screw that DRM stuff.

I do the same with my external webcam and mic - they are never pluggin in unless I'm using them.

It's not the fact I want to use my camera & microphone, it's more the fact I just want the CHOICE to say IF I can use them. Having them not work isn't my issue, it's having the choice taken from me.

Anyway, now I have the problem the wife found the update on her laptop and has now installed Win 10, but she didn't do any of the privacy changes that I did! Now I have to go through and make changes to her system to restore my sanity before I'm bombarded with questions as to why X, Y & Z is happening to her computer. Ahh the joys!

OK, after allowing my Win 10 update to settle in and myself to become more acquainted, I can definitively say that the upgrade has some significant issues. I have no sound, my screen saver and some power management settings aren't working, and several other smaller bugs in previously-existing software and the windows environment persist.

I just finished upgrading a family member's computer using a clean Win 10 install. This results in a much stabler system; however, the invasions of privacy, attempts to "make my life simpler" by taking a lot of the convenient control out of my hands, and the interface masking the underlying UI confirm that I cannot generate any interest in using Win 10 ... ever.

A version of Metro still persists and is evident in the "Settings" UI that sits above the traditional settings UI (Control Panel items). This is an attempt to reconcile the UIs of Win 10 PC with Win 10 mobile. Totally useless baggage that only serves to bloat the system and discombobulate the UI.

I couldn't care less about Win 10 now and have happily reverted back to Win 7 ... eventually, I will be moving to Linux!

Windows 10 is honestly the worst thing Microsoft has released since Windows Vista. I saw some concern about the privacy settings a few days before it was released, but I didn't think that much of it. But now after two weeks from upgrading, it just gets worse and worse with people finding new ways that Windows is spying on you every few days to Microsoft casually announcing they have the ability to deactivate games, programs, or hardware on your pc. Not to mention being unable to disable the insane amount of bloatware that came with Windows 10, I mean come on...check your task manager right now, Cortana is there taking up 100mb of RAM even if you have it disabled and haven't used it once.

I would switch to Linux instantly if I wouldn't be leaving so much behind. :/ Wouldn't be able to mod or play half of my games or use Adobe programs and other things that just make switching to Linux impossible for me.

I disagree with it being the worst, its actually one of the better in my opinion.

You can delete the bloatware via PowerShell. If you search for it, you'll find that there are several tutorials out there. I deleted pretty much everything that came with windows that was a metro app(sadly one cannot delete Edge).

As for the spying that windows does, its not 100% atypical of companies to do this. Apple does this way more than you think, they're just quiet about it.

Corona, is something I disable because I am a PC user and I can type faster than its "search".

As for the memory thing, why are people SOOO worried about 100MB, 16GB is typical of systems today. I much rather have higher ram usage verses pagefile.

For me personally, linux is higher maintenance, which is not something I look for in a computer.

No it is definitely the worst. Vista was just bad, Win 7 was great and Microsoft redeemed themselves, Win 8 had that stupid tablet interface but besides that there wasn't anything to complain about really, Win 8.1 had some improvements over 8 but was the exact same, and now with Win 10 they just went too far.

idk if there has been an OS release in history where:

  • the company has released it with this much bloatware (about 2 dozen apps)
  • it being able to send every keystroke and internet search straight to Microsoft
  • it using your internet to upload updates to other computers
  • it sharing your wifi with people you've never given it to
  • still sends info to Microsoft even after you've disabled all possible settings
  • can disable games, programs, or hardware on your pc
  • have permission to see what files you have on your pc

Anyone saying that it is one of the better OS's just baffles me......

And well actually 8GB of ram just recently became the average amount of ram in a computer, it will take more than a few years for 16GB to become the average. but why would anyone be okay with something they don't use and have disabled taking up ANY amount of ram or system resources?? no matter how large or small..

Also with the amount of time it takes in Windows 10 to disable all the privacy settings, go through powershell to delete the dozen apps you can't delete and anything else you could easily have Linux setup how you want in the same amount of time.

I agree completely. Why should I opt to disable all that system-level bloatware using a manual process? One should be able to tick a global setting to disable 'Continuum' (the revamped version of Metro it seems) ... bye, bye to the totally useless 'Settings' system app as well as all of those tablet-specific apps that expose settings to maps/location prefs, advertizing prefs and all those other useless mobile apps that have absolutely no place on a desktop OS.

I have to type in search just to get at my damn screen saver settings! It's an offensive 'joke'. Once a script is written to disable and expunge all of the tablet-related crap as well as the invasive spyware, I may give it another try. There is a whole layer of system apps and services that are not needed and should be completely wiped for this OS to be useful for desktop systems.

Win 10 = Win 8 with an altered Metro and some additional junk.

EDIT: I found this useful and instructive.

As a Windows 7 user how to I get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade icon? I have tried uninstalling update kb3035583 to remove the task bar icon, but it comes back the next day.

You can follow the instructions posted earlier in this topic:

The culprits

... after uninstalling those updates and hiding them in Windows Update, you will not see the annoying icon or waste any background resources supporting it. I uninstalled/hid them on all of our home computers.
