RUGNAROK is my attempt to do for rugs what my PELTAPALOOZA mod did for pelts. Rugs aren't merely clutter items in Skyrim, despite their classification. They also serve as artwork in the game, and in some locations such as Dragonsreach, they have a very large visual presence. The vanilla rug textures are not only low-res, but they are poorly designed. The fringed rugs actually use a separate set of rug textures just for the fringe. This is not only a waste of VRAM, but a poor solution, since the fringe only occupies a small part of the original textures.

Fortunately, raiserfx already addressed this issue with his excellent and immensely popular Detailed Rugs mod. He replaced the secondary rug textures with a new and more detailed fringe texture, as well as revising the meshes to use the new fringes. It's a much better solution than what Bethesda came up with. It seemed obvious that any new overhaul should incorporate raiserfx's quality fixes. I'm was pleased that he graciously granted me permission to use his fringes and mesh edits for this mod.

With RUGNAROK, I wanted to go beyond the default rug textures. While some of the Bethesda rug designs were OK to begin with, there was no point in duplicating what raiserfx did with Detailed Rugs. He created a truly hi-res lore-friendly retexture of the vanilla rug designs. I wanted to go further with a redesign of the rugs. Many of the vanilla rugs never appealed to me from a design standpoint. Not only were many of the designs uninteresting, but there was no overall design esthetic that I could discern. While I could well imagine that a number of the rugs might be imported, and not of Nord design, I still thought that most of them would be. And if they were of Nord design, they should have some shared motifs. That's what I endeavored to do.

Wow - I'm tagging this for testing consideration.  Gotta love Gamwich's work...

EDIT: I know we have a mod that does rugs already in STEP, but these look good and I think they are worth comparing to what we already have.  Hopefully the design is not lore-unfriendly, or too deviant from the intended vanilla style (for the sake of STEP), but at least a few compares would be needed to get a feel for it.

Personally, i prefer RUGNAROK over Detailed Rugs by far. It is a style change, yes, but the new designs are tasteful and fit in their respective settings which is nice. I especially like the changes in the companions hall and Windhelm.

As for STEP, well, it has a mandate for vanilla so it may not work for it. Would likely need to evaluate one by one.

Got to agree that I prefer the style change. It mainly means that the rugs fit better. My main issue with the vanilla design was the lack of it fitting. With detailed rugs you got a much cleaner carpet look which just made the issue worse. I guess in part because it would just not be possible to do a high enough quality normal map to pull off the vanilla design with grit n dirt.. unless you got to a really high resolution that would just not downscale well.

But that i just speculation... for now I got to admit I prefer the darker colors, since they tend to favor the surroundings better. Even though they still do look a tad too clean... but cant have it all.

I think the deviation from vanilla is understandable and I think that the new one fit just fine but for it to really fit in for STEP, it would be better if the rugs were not so new and clean.

EDIT: I didnt even read aiyen's last sentence but apparently we came to similar conclusions about the rugs being too clean.

I maybe just tired, but that made my day, I am still giggling uncontrollably laughing in a manly fashion now.
