Rustic Farmhouses by Gamwich

I really like the style of these farmhouse related textures by Gamwich. The windows alone are very appealing, but the detail and variety of the applied textures deliver a great look without using huge texture resolutions.

Gamwich:

QuoteI originally created this mod for myself, since I only have 1GB of VRAM available in my rather unorthodox setup (running on a Mac via a virtual machine). My philosophy regarding textures, is that they should be sized appropriately to the actual size of the object in the game. Therefore, small objects don't get hi-res textures, because the extra detail is largely wasted in normal gameplay, and they impact performance. But with architectural textures, there is a point where reducing size has a real negative impact on the visual quality. Therefore, I use 1K diffuse (color) textures for most architectural textures. For best results, a matching 1K normal map is used. However, when performance becomes an issue, more VRAM can be saved by reducing the normal maps to 512x512. This is recommended for people who have lower-end computers.

I'm honestly still using SRO for farm houses. I never really notice the difference between texture mods for Farmhouses specifically. The entire Cabal vs. SRO vs. whatever debate....I could rarely even tell the difference between the textures.

Perhaps that is because both of those aim to stay true to Vanilla, stuff like Real Wood Textures just massively change the look and feel of farmhouses. Not saying they look bad, not at all, it's just not the Vanilla feel.

Sticking to Cabal's for now, except for the thatch, I use Langley's for those. Windows on these are very nice, though. Are you using the whole set, Kulde?

I agree that farmhouses aren't the most exciting texture packs all in all, I've used just about every texture pack out there and while I never have exhaustively compared them side by side; I work off my impressions a lot when it comes to textures. Sometimes it may just be one thing that can ruin it for me. There's no accounting for taste, after all, right?

I have a very short list of what I look for that Gamwich provides:

Thatch Roof: It should have detail and not be some smooth-ish mass of cookie dough. After all, it is supposed to be built from dried stalks and reed-type plants.

The over all color palette of the work. I want the wood to not stand out from its environment too much, it has to belong there.

Realistic door construction. I suspect that most people who play Skyrim and create textures may have never lived in a craft built home or log cabin. Doors need to be based on a coherent design concept and not just be a bunch of massive half log planks mashed together.

Details. Gamwich wins the day with his windows. His is the first Farmhouse Texture Replacer that I have ever seen that replaces the default windows. Even Visible Windows by Isoku never touched those...I always wondered why.

Lastly, texture size. Gamwich is noteworthy because he sticks to sanely sized resolutions. Like any decent medicine, most of us don't like it but we need more of it.

Ladies and gentlemen! For tonight's main attraction! I give you......!

Wait! A farmhouse comparison without Riverwood? What blasphemy is this?! YES! It is time that Riverwood's soveregnty over all other Skyrim villages be vanquished! Enjoy.

Order is: aMiddianborn 1K > Rustic Farmhouses > SRO + Visible Windows (both amb and RF come with custom window textures)

Good job but we need vanilla and STEP in those compares. Always include vanilla and current STEP when doing any compares. That was we know that the original looks like, what we're currently using looks like and what the new mods look like compared to those.

I personally see nothing impressive with Rustic Farmhouses, when comparing to SRO. It just looks like a slightly darker version of SRO in my opinion.

I thought he has current step. SRO and Visible Windows is current step isn't it?
