Dynamic Distant Objects LOD - DynDOLOD 2.00 to 2.15

sheson

Question

Today marks the two years anniversary of my first post of this thread, so it seemed like a good opportunity to publish the ...

DynDOLOD 2.18

Refer to the newly created videos for MO and NMM below, they should explain the entire process adequately so you know what to expect. The included manual is all updated as well with the new instructions and the new videos. DynDOLOD Guide for Wrye Bash users by alt3rn1ty is all updated as well.

What’s New?

DynDOLOD 2.xx marks the change from a collection of pas scripts for xEdit.exe to a standalone version containing all the required tools in one archive. There now are a DynDOLOD.exe and a TexGen.exe to start the processes. In addition, resources and patches are separated into different downloads for easier installation and maintenance.

Overall the requirements, installation and process to generate LOD are basically the same. The key changes are, that there is no more xEdit required, the patcher now installs into its own folder and the installation of the meshes/texture resources, options or patches just became easier. There is no more default DynDOLOD.esp/bak - it will just be created if needed.

While technically the LOD generated by 2.xx is generally the same compared to 1.xx there have been also the typical updates to better support mods. See the list below in the section "The usual updates" and the fixes and changelogs.

There is typically no need to update or generate LOD from scratch for an existing save game just because there is a new DynDOLOD Standalone 2.xx or a new DynDOLOD Resources 2.xx.

Check the list of "The usual updates" below, if a mod which you are using was added recently. Consider updating or generating LOD from scratch in case you notice missing LOD.

Important

DynDOLOD 2.xx requires an installation from scratch when updating from an older 1.xx version. All former files - meshes, textures, scripts etc. plus all generated LOD should be removed first. Existing files installed to xEdit\Edit Scripts\* do not matter anymore and should not have any effect on the new DynDOLOD standalone if you install it into a new folder. Since LOD generated with older versions will not work with the papyrus scripts from DynDOLOD 2.xx, remove older versions of the patcher from the xEdit folder.

If an existing save is updated with a DynDOLOD.esp generated from scratch, follow the “clean save cycle: first deactivate DynDOLOD from MCM, wait for deactivation message, go into interior, check MCM DynDOLOD is still deactivated, save, exit game. Remove old DynDOLOD.esp, remove old scripts and remove old meshes/skse/textures. Start game, load last save, wait a bit, save again. Install the new papyrus scripts, the new DynDOLOD.esp and the new generated LOD. Enable the new DynDOLOD.esp. Start game, load the last save, go outside. DynDOLOD should initialize by itself, else activate from MCM.

Before running DynDOLOD.exe, please make sure the CPU is properly cooled and in case it is overclocked, it is verified to be stable. Some routines make use of all cores at times and several LODGen.exe processes are started in parallel when generating for multiple worlds at once.

Download

DynDOLOD 2.18 - Download from Mega, Nexus

Required. Contains DynDOLOD.exe and TexGen.exe and their supporting files, including all documentation including instructions for ‘trees.ultra’

It is recommended to first remove all files and folders from older versions and then install into a new folder that is outside game, program files and mod manager folders.

DynDOLOD Resources 2.18 - Download from Mega, Nexus

Required. Contains the required 'Core Files' like meshes, textures, papyrus scripts to generate LOD and use it in the game. It also contains the optionals like Whiterun Exterior etc.

If updating from older versions to 2.15 or higher it is recommended to first uninstall older 'Core Files' Textures (or simply everything) for best results. Otherwise simply overwrite older 2.xx versions.

Make sure to have matching or higher DynDOLOD Standalone version when generating LOD.

DynDOLOD Patches 2.18 - Download from Mega, Nexus

Contains the patches for some of the mods listed under 'Some Assembly Required' - download if needed.

Instructions

Please check DynDOLOD_QuickStart.html, Docs\DynDOLOD_Manual.html and videos for updated instructions. Here is the quick synopsis:

Requirements

SKSE, PapyrusUtil 2.8 or higher, vanilla billboards from TES5LODGen or Indistinguishable Vanilla Tree Billboards plus billboards for any tree mod.

Installation

Install SKSE and PapyrusUtil.

Install DynDOLOD.exe, TexGen.exe and all supporting folders/files from the DynDOLOD 2.00 archive into a new folder of your choice.

Install 'Core Files' from the DynDOLOD Resources archive into the game / mod manager overwriting everything.

Install patches from the DynDOLOD Patches archive if needed into the game / mod manager overwriting everything.

Install billboards into the game / mod manager overwriting DynDOLOD Resources

Generation

Execute TexGen.exe to update a limited list of LOD textures in case texture replacer mods are used. Before running TexGen again, remove textures from earlier generation.

Install generated LOD textures from output folder into the game / mod manager overwriting DynDOLOD Resources.

Execute DynDOLOD.exe to generated tree, static and dynamic LOD.

If there is no DynDOLOD.esp in the load order it will be created from scratch. You can only update existing DynDOLOD.esp created with 2.00.

Run the process as normal. Once it finished Save & Exit.

Install generated DynDOLOD.esp, meshes, skse and textures folder from the output folder into the game / mod manager overwriting everything.

Let LOOT sort DynDOLOD.esp.

Step-by-Step

Trouble

Search this thread or check the FAQ for similar problems.

If you experience crashes or other oddities while running DynDOLOD.exe or TexGen.exe, please post a link to entire Logs\TES5Edit_log.txt

If LODGen.exe (white text on black background command line window) post a screenshot of the error message.

Hey Sheson,

Just in the process of updating to 2.14 plus trying out the new HD Lods for Solitude and wasn't sure how to set it up for DynDoLod when ETaC's LOD is also involved. Here is a screenshot of my setup. Top left is HD LOD, bottom left is ETaC's LOD. The right window is Mod Organizer's current setup and load order etc.

If I want to get these to play nicely together, is this ok or do you recommend something else?

Cheers

Bill

edit - Also, is it ok to merge these?

I already updated the DynDOLOD Nexus description page couple hours ago for additional info about HD LOD.

However, at the moment none of DynDOLOD Resource / TexGen files conflict with the LOD textures provided by HD LOD.

ETACs pre rendered LOD (why install it even - already mentioned in manual / description page as well) should not matter as it is all overwritten by DynDOLOD output.

Static LOD needs to be generated again. Updating with existing esp is possible. Or in expert mode, select Tamriel, rebuild LOD Texture Atlas, then execute LODGen.exe again

Merging esp from Resources with 2.14 and newer should now always be OK regardless of what type of merge process /tool is used.

I found a bug today but I'm not sure if it has anything to do with DynDOLOD.

I went to the Windstad Manor (Hearthfire) and started to build the house but nothing happened - the house didn't appear. I googled this bug and found out that a mod named Winstad Mine will fix it so I installed that mod, used LOOT but still got this problem. So I started to move the WinstadMine.esp around in my load order and found out that if it's loaded straight after "Enhanced Landscapes - Marsh no Trees.esp" everything works ok, and if it's loaded just before it I'll get the invisible house.

Why I came here is because I haven't updated Enhanced Landscapes mod for a long time and I never had this problem with any of my earlier games. For the current game I have updated the DynDOLOD to version 2.14 and the earlier game had 1.49 so could it have something to do with the new DynDOLOD version?

No.

I have this erro when i active Spice of Life - Forts

What should the ~ save game size for new game with Dyndolod? Or what is your save sizes?

My game

Fresh install

Mod count: 169 (officially 169 plug-ins, but many have been merged and I have a least 3-4 dozen no esp texture mods I have merged down to 2 files as well). Safe to say I have 225-255 in reality, possibly more.

Dyndolod 2.14

Dyndolod Settings. High Detail, windows+glow. Default on all other settings.

Skyrim folder size(GB): 64.7 Not optimized textures. Optimizing reduces folder size by ~3-4 GB.

Helgen Keep, w imperial starter gear and all MCM options set.

12.5 MB.

By way of comparison, my old starts, long before Dyndolod, High Rez (anything) and small mod load:

~4MB

The last Dyndolod I ran(medium detail under advanced) 2.10- I think, was low 11mb.

haven't tested it lately, but I fairly certainly Dyndolod accounts for a good 4-5mb on a save alone. I seem to recall that was the case last time I did any kind of testing like that.

What should the ~ save game size for new game with Dyndolod? Or what is your save sizes?

Not sure why it matters but 4 - 8 MB, depends on number of mods, dynamic LOD, worldspaces and settings.

Hey mate, I've got an issue with my tree sizes. I'm using Enhanced Vanilla Trees with its Bigger trees variant and its Billboard Generator. It works fine when i'm generating non-ultra trees and then the tree LODs are in the correct(huge) size. However when I am use the ultra trees setting the hybrid trees are normal sized and not as tall as they are supposed to be. Is there a setting I might have missed or what should I do?

From DynDOLOD-Trees.txt: The included hybrid trees cover vanilla trees only. If a tree mod is used either create/download a hybrid or an otherwise optimized 3D static tree.

When using ultra trees, billboards are only used for LOD levels 8 and 16.

Skyrim Bigger Trees works with ultra trees because it updates the scale of tree references. Skysight - Simply Bigger Trees does not work, because it replaces full model trees.

"Billboard Generator" is a very confusing term for an installer that installs billboards according to user selection. Creating billboards is a manual process.

Thank you for the reply. Ah, I apologize, I must have completely skipped over the vanilla part in my excitement. I read the ultra-trees.txt file again, correct me if I didn't understand correctly, but the passhthru_lod.nif's in Meshes\DynDOLOD\lod\trees\ need to be replaced by my own 3D Static Trees to get the trees to size up correctly. I found the tutorial for making them which doesn't seem too difficult, so I'll give it a try. The ultra trees with dyndolod look awesome so kudos to you!

Yes, that would be the way to go. If you are proficient with nifskope or mesh ediding in general, you may be able to reuse the flat trunks from the vanilla hybrids, resize them and then use the branches from the tree mod. The trunks are the best target to remove triangles/data size for the 3D statics to conserve memory usage as much as possible.

I've been getting massive lag while running DynDOLOD.exe and even the older versions that were using TES5Edit/F4Edit and I'm not sure what is causing the lag.

During some step in the LOD generation my CPU usage ramps up to 100% to the point where i can't even move my mouse until i force quit the LodGen process.

Any ideas what is causing this? I am trying to generate LODs for all available regions using the standard "High" preset. The PC has an i7 3930k

DynDOLOD.exe to some degree and and LODGen.exe are multithreaded programs that make use of all cores and hyperthreading so they are done with their computations as quickly as possible.

It is odd that you can not move the mouse, as the scheduling of the threads and whatnot is all handled by the OS. If you changed settings or used tools that affect OS threading I would revert them.

You could set core affinity in task manager, but that is usually a one time thing - unless you use a 3rd party tool that reassigns that.

If you just let the programs do their thing, they should be all done between 15 to 30 minutes.

I've tried doing that when it happened the first time but no luck there. Usually it took 45 minutes to cover my 350 mod modlist without any issues but now this issue has been happening in like 9/10 times I run DynDoLOD.

I noticed that the app still runs even though the CPU is at 100%. It gets stuck after (or while) covering Cutting Room Floor and the lag doesn't stop even after its done. The patch for this mod took 50 minutes to generate by itself. I'll send a log here as soon as DynDoLOD finishes its job

Edit: forgot to mention that all 12 of my cores are being used and are at 100% while this process is running

This is probably a hardware issue then. Ensure proper cooling - check CPU temps - and in case you are overclocking make sure it is stable with prime95 or similar, including memory.
