What is this?

DynDOLOD is a set of tools based on TES5Edit and TES5LODGen to automatically create a Skyrim mod based on the load order which adds distant LOD for objects to Skyrim. By combining DynDOLOD with TES5LODGen users can create drastically enhanced traditional static LOD plus tree LOD and the new, optional dynamic distant object LOD in a few 'simple' steps.

DynDOLOD is meant for enthusiast modders who are familiar with using TES5Edit. Enthusiast modders have a general knowledge of computers, folders and files, especially Skyrims 'Data' folders and how to install mods safely with a manager or manually.

To fully expand the visual experience and use the additional features offered by TES5LODGen the DynDOLOD package comes with over 1000 new or updated LOD models for objects that were badly missing from the original game like the Skyhaven Temple or landscape features like roads, smaller rocks and dirt cliffs that simply make the distant landscape look much more natural and alive.

Requirements

PapyrusUtil 2.8 or higher

DynDOLOD Resources - Make sure to use DynDOLOD Resources version only with matching or higher DynDOLOD Standalone versions but never with older versions.

Vanilla Skyrim LOD Billboards from TES5LODGen or Indistinguishable Vanilla Tree Billboards. If using tree mods that do not include billboards, check TES5LODGen for ready-to-use tree LOD billboards for some tree mods. For STEP users all billboards are included in STEP Texture Compilation.

After almost a week of installing mods, following SRLE and tweaking inis and textures, I'm this close to finally playing the game, but now the DynDOLOD script starts crashing on me:

I've already reinstalled the DynDODLOD Mod, the scripts and even TES5Edit, but it still crashes. The script already worked like a charm a few days ago. Since then I've only installed a couple of mods (3DNPCs, Dawn Of Skyrim, Inconsequentials NPCs and Helgen Reborn) and deactivated a couple of mods that were killing me performance wise (SRO, Vivid Clouds and Fogs). I was really hoping to being able to finaly start playing tonight, but it seems this game won't budge....

 

I've googled and couldn't come up with the same error.

I've already reinstalled the DynDODLOD Mod, the scripts and even TES5Edit, but it still crashes. The script already worked like a charm a few days ago. Since then I've only installed a couple of mods (3DNPCs, Dawn Of Skyrim, Inconsequentials NPCs and Helgen Reborn) and deactivated a couple of mods that were killing me performance wise (SRO, Vivid Clouds and Fogs). I was really hoping to being able to finaly start playing tonight, but it seems this game won't budge....

 

I've googled and couldn't come up with the same error.

 

 

Can you check which mod contains textures\architecture\tents\smallnordtent.dds and textures\architecture\tents\smallnordtent_n.dds?

 

Maybe either file is corrupt, check with an dds image viewer if they look OK.

 

To proceed you can delete textures\architecture\tents\smallnordtent.dds and textures\architecture\tents\smallnordtent_n.dds so it fall back on an earlier mod or vanilla texture.

Alternatively, remove the line containing textures\architecture\tents\smallnordtent.dds from TES5Edit\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD\DynDOLOD_TexGen_noalpha.txt so DynDOLOD TexGen simply skips it. It will then use the default LOD texture shipping with DynDOLOD.

Thank you very much for your quick answer! Seems like something went wrong with DDSOpt and the vanilla textures - I've had multiple empty textures. Now I've redone them and the script worked! Thx!!

 I have been using the STEP guides for years now. I am even signed up as a member on the STEP site. I have rarely ran into any issues where the guide was not complete in its instructions (i.e. missing a step in the process) or where the instructions were incorrect for one reason or another. However, I can not get the DynDOLOD mod to work. With this mod unchecked everything works great. I have started from scratch with the STEP installation 5 times (following every single step exactly with zero additional mods, and using all recommended settings), I have used the DynDOLOD readme instructions for .nif files that might be causing a problem, I watched/checked for errors during the TES5Edit portions (to which there were none), I am not using any saved games (I have no saved games), I have watched all the tutorials/FAQ’s related to this mod, and I am still unable to figure out the issue. Here are the specs for my PC:

 

Intel i7-3770 CPU @ 3.4GHz (Quad Core)

GSkill 32GB 2800MHz

Sapphire Vapor X R9 290X (8GB)

Samsung EVO Pro 512GBx2 (raid 0) (Currently where Skyrim is installed)

Seagate 2TBx2 (raid 0) 7200rpm 64MB Cache

 

     I am quit at a loss as to why I can’t get it to work. There are no errors, and the game doesn’t crash. It just sits on the loading screen. After about an hour I just hit alt+F4 and close it. I have read all the reviews regarding this mod, and would really hate to not be able to use it (especially since it is apart of the STEP guide which I have been using religiously for years). Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I am not an expert, and have not designed/helped design any mods. The only thing I am relatively good at is following your STEP guides, and making minor adjustments to the guide steps when something doesn’t quit work as the guide says it should. If you need more info please let me know, and I will do my best to provide it to you. Thank you.

FAQ: Skyrim: ILS or CTD

 

More LOD uses more memory and this can cause ILS or CTD. Double check heap memory usage (block 1) with Memory Blocks Log from https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50471/ and adjust SKSE or SSME memory settings. Remove satefy-load if it is used. Set ExpandSystemMemoryX64=false in enblocal.ini

I have used memory block log but I don't know what it is I'm suppose to do with it. Nothing looks wrong with it. Also, since I am following the STEP guide exactly and nothing is mentioned in the guide regarding this you would think it shouldn't be a problem. The STEP guide in the past has always been fairly all inclusive. Sort of a one stop shop for Skyrim.

Read the documentation for memory blocks log! If you're too lazy for that, set DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB to like 1024 and see if it loads. If it does you have determined that a too low block 1 value was indeed your issue: start with 768 again and increase DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB in increments of 32 until it loads. Once you have found a value that works for your system, add about 20-30 to that and leave it at that. The trick is to leave the value as low as possible (as not to waste precious memory!) while avoiding ILS. Memory blocks log can make this a lot easier and less trial-and-error based, so read about it :P

 

Based on the fact that it is not mentioned in the guide I presume a basic STEP install shouldn't need a value much higher than default (768, which equals a block 1 size of 512mb). I guess this does vary among STEP users depending on the chosen texture variants/skyrimprefs.ini's terrain settings though. My load order is heavier than STEP so I can't give you a recommendation :(

 

Btw if by loading screen you mean the main menu there might be something else going on..

Hey Sheson... O hate to say it, but the Mod may have a problem with new games. I just finished rebuilding my mod lineup, and have (at least on my end) a reproducible error on loading into Helgen Keep during Alduin's attack at the beginning of the game. In short, when loading in, the cell loads and the PC is stuck in what I call a 'walk-in-place' error, where the player has no control, but the head-bob endlessly runs, as if you were moving. Went through my entire non-step mod list, placing them in 5 at a time, with no problems. As soon as LOD is generated and placing in the lineup, this problem appears.

 

Not sure exactly why this would happen with an interior cell, but it certainly seems to be the case. Any ideas on this one? I'll be re-downloading and installing the mod to be absolutely certain that all files are correct, but after running this mod for months now, and only just seeing this problem... well, I did a bunch of testing to be certain of the results before I posted.

 

EDIT: Another Random Act of Skyrim. Not sure why, but a complete, to the ground, reinstall all the scripts version of a mod re-installation appears to have fixed this. Will let you know if it recurs.

Since everyone's hardware is different, it is not possible for the guide to include 'ideal' settings for memory management (e.g., SKSE, ENBoost, etc) that apply to everyone. We supply a good "best practice" baseline that may not work for all hardware, given an identical mod build. For this reason, it is important that you consider tweaking some of the memory settings if you have ruled out any setup issues.

 

Nevertheless, it is very likely that you are dealing with setup issues rather than memory-management issues, so you should focus on DynDOLOD setup, so leave memory settings at baseline and verify DynDOLOD setup with extreme prejudice before messing with too many dials. Else you risk missing something simple and wasting a ton of time.

 

I would want to rule that out by setting up DynDOLOD on a very minimal STEP build (or even plain vanilla if that makes sense ... not sure, as I have not even set up DynDOLOD myself yet). You know that the STEP build is OK it seems and that the issue is with DynDOLOD setup (or associated memory management), so verify that you are doing this correctly by limiting your setup to very few mods affected by DynDOLOD, generate LOD, verify success, add in mods one block at a time, generate again, verify again, and so on.

 

If the issue is fundamental DynDOLOD setup, you will have problems with DynDOLOD even with a minimal setup. If the issue is with a particular mod, you will encounter problems whenever that mod is included in DynDOLOD. If the issue is memory management, you will encounter problems at some asset threshold, irrespective of mods involved.

 

Takes awhile, but worth it in the end.

I have reduced skyrim as you suggested and tried seeing at what point the issue begins. It may in deed have to do with memory but I am still at a lose as to how to fix it. According to the log files there isn't one particular mod that is causing the issue. Regarding your other comment, STEP has always done a great job of only including mods that require little to no tweaking during setup regardless of mods installed. DynDOLOD is the first mod I've seen (and I've been using STEP for years) that requires an unprecedented amount of work. This is the first time that STEP has failed to provide a detailed easy to use guide. Now I am not sure I would recommend this guide to anyone as this current build simply requires to much technical know how and time (assuming it is even possible) to setup. I'll keep working at it but I sincerely hope that someone on the STEP team comes up with a better solution as this is just ridiculous. Just read through the posts here and in other forums regarding DynDOLOD if you don't believe how difficult it is. At least for those of us without the knowledge of how to find/fix the problems regarding getting this mod to work.

DynDOLOD does not modify any interior cells, but when moving form outside to inside there are still outside objects and scripts finishing and unloading etc.

The Intro at Helgen is special as you might know from earlier discussions here. There are quite a few objects like rocks,  roads, trees that are disabled while the game is on auto pilot causing them to have dynamic LOD. Once the intro is over they are enabled for good. So they could be done as static LOD and thus there would be a less dynamic LOD switching in that area. I will address this one day for OCD reasons alone.

 

If in doubt or anything comes up in the future - start new game without the esp and load it once out of the dungeon.

ILS and memory related CTD and my fix that is build into SKSE and the tool Memory Blocks Log to verify the settings are all very well documented and part of every guide about Skyrim modding. This has nothing to do with DynDOLOD.
