This issue might have been fixed now:

The visible soul trap hit effect did not play when a target was struck due to a faulty effect mesh. (meshes\magic\soultraptargeteffects.nif)

This file has currently been set to hidden by the author of the file. You cannot look at this file page or download any files relating to this file until the author makes the file visible to the public again.

 

The reason given by the author is: The Unofficial Skyrim Patch as of version 2.0.0 includes this fix fully. As there is no valid reason not to use the Unofficial Patches, this means there's no valid reason to use this mod.

 

Download the USKP, and don't worry about this

...I hid it because of one user using it instead of the USKP. Not something I would like to encourage, esp. since one of my other mods requires it.
