SMCO - Skyrim Mods Complex Optimizer? Anyone used this?
Vond replied to Vond's question in General Skyrim LE Support
I'm in the process of re-installing everything Skyrim-related atm, so decided to try it out with the few mods I had installed thus far. coc riverwood and run around everything works fine. Same in Solitude and Riften. Whiterun caused a crash, trying to narrow down which mesh caused it currently. The program has quite a lot of exclusions already for files from various mods that will cause crashes if optimized, and you can add your own aswell. Author also mentioned you can use Process Monitor to set help narrowing down which mesh caused it. Still trying to figure out how to go about that though! Edit: Wasn't too hard I guess. Under filters add Process > is > TESV.exe > include, and Path > ends with > .nif > include Edit 2: Cause of the crash in Whiterun was optimized WATER 1.4 meshes. 1.3 meshes were already in the exclusions from what I gathered in the SMCO comments on Nexus, but 1.4 added some new ones. Author said that pretty much any mesh by OpticShooter will cause a crash if optimized. -
SMCO - Skyrim Mods Complex Optimizer? Anyone used this?
Vond posted a question in General Skyrim LE Support
https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=13529 Now, I'm not interested in the texture-optimization it provides at all since I've already optimized every single mod I've downloaded with DDSOPT anyway. The mesh-optimization however is tempting me... But bad meshes can cause crashes, and while it's just a matter of re-installing the old ones with WB if I figure out which meshes failed, I'm still wondering wether it's worth the possible hassle. Optimizing meshes helped performance quite a bit for me in Oblivion. So, anyone tried this program? If so, is the performance gain noticeable? Anything else to note about it? -
Yeah MDS is a mess and has tons of issues, gave up on quite a long time ago until he decides to do a complete rewrite of it without 1500 deleted records

I think you should change the "If you want the SVN version (recommended)" into "Then get the SVN version", as it's the only version anyone should ever use. Using 295.5 will just cause you unnecessary problems.

Screen resolution and VRAM info
Vond replied to Vond's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
Sounds good, I'll do something more like that once I find the time. Just got a new HDD and some more RAM and planning on a full re-install of windows7 and everything, but once that's all done and setup I'll be happy to do some more thorough testing. I didn't use GPU-z for the testing though but Skyrim Performance Monitor, not that it matters since I have both available anyhow. :) -
Yes, there will for sure be certain mods that give that result when DDSOPT'd, and info on which would be greatly appreciated for the wiki. :) If you look through the main DDSOPT thread you'll see we worked out the files in the standard Skyrim - Textures.bsa that show up as purple if optimized with DDSOPT, but I don't think any info has been posted as of yet when it comes to files in specific mods.

It very much is, AO makes a huge difference.

Screen resolution and VRAM info
Vond replied to Vond's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
Ultra settings (or rather Custom, but based off of Ultra). 4xSSAA + 4x SGTRSSAA. SSAO is on via ENB, same with DoF. I did some quick tests running around in Whiterun aswell, and the results varied there as the 1440 config would eventually reach the "max" VRAM aswell at 1279ish, but in 1680 I got there much much faster and fps was way less stable. I'll try to do some more proper testing later when I get the time! -
BOSS was updated to fix the sorting of the ICS fix so that's not the issue. :)

Just ran some tests using Skyrim Performance Monitor (https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6491) comparing the difference in VRAM usage between screen-resolutions.For the test I did exactly the same things with everything exactly the same except for the screen resolution. The "test" consisted of me running around in Whiterun, talking to a guard, going into 3rd person and back into 1st several times, sprinting, jumping etc til exhausted and swinging my axe, opening the map and moving around on it for a bit. Now, I am currently in process of re-optimizing my HRDLC files so they weren't active during the test which brought down the avg a bit I would suspect. Also that area isn't very demanding. Was using Vano's optimized in the meantime however (Hybrid+VN). Full SRO 1.3 installed aswell as plenty of other texture enhancers including quite heavy mods for character models. That isn't really relevant however, the relevant part is that the results differed so damn much between the two resolutions, while it didn't really "feel" any different playing with 1440x900 compared to 1680x1050, and the only reason I hadn't tried this in the past is because I thought it would. The only place I really noticed it was the meminfo text in top right corner that was larger in 1440x900. Granted I have 1280mb on my GPU my choice of resolution for the future is given. :) Sorry if something similar has been posted somewhere, did a search and could not find it if so. Addendum: My settings are Ultra (or rather Custom, but based off of Ultra). 4xSSAA + 4x SGTRSSAA via NVIDIA Inspector.

Finally managed to get on Nexus again (certain sites have not worked for me at all tonight, ISP issues I suppose) and re-downloaded. Noticed differences right away from my last run on them with DDSOPT. I most likely had already done some sort of optimization on the files before, or something was just off. :)
-
Bethesda_Hi-Res_Optimized__--FOR_EVERY_VERSION---9080-1-1 is my version aswell. I think what I'll do is redownload it once Nexus starts working again and try once more. Will also re-download DDSOPT aswell for this.
-
Odd indeed. The 2 that were changed for me and not for you were already at DXT1 for you somehow, and DXT5 for me. I'm quite confused by this to say the least.
-
Yep, it's set to Skyrim. Looked at your settings after I noticed your results differed from mine, is how I knew the constraints were the same. :) Very odd! Here's the 3 files that had changed formats for me:
-
Hm, your results differ from mine. Yet I know we have the same constraints set up. Here's mine (I removed the ..actors\characters folders before doing it since I don't use any of those files at all anyway due to mods): Final report "E:\DDSOpt\out": processed files: 2094 modified textures: 1949 fixed textures: 0 fixed files: 0 broken files: 0 (0 without fixed ones) planar (1x1) textures: 0 changed texture formats: 3 i/o delta: -942049 bytes tex delta: -921120 bytes

Decided to run V4NO's optimized HRDLC textures through DDSOPT, to see if any changes are made, as I hadn't seen that discussed here before. If it has and I simply missed it whilst browsing half-heartedly then I apologize. It seems DDSOPT detects quite a few "excess mip-levels" that it removes from the textures, although most files simply says "Texture is optimized". There's also a few "Automatic greyscale conversions". Anyone with more know-how into how textures work mind sharing what difference (if any) removing excess mip-levels has?
-
Ive investigated, and the two mods don't seem to share any file, need a confirmation. Confirmed. At the same time I triple-checked the report I did on another page here about every file from Worn Detailed Guards and Banners being overwritten by other STEP mod and still get the same result. Can anyone confirm that? Suppose it should either get moved or removed unless I'm having some odd issue. :)
-
Purple means the mesh is missing its texture as far as I recall

You could try https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6491 Changelog for v2.25 shows: - Added VRAM monitoring support for ATI video cards.
-
The tests I ran were only around aspen trees, so I can't say for sure. I would assume it's both though as it's a general tweak for leaves.

Locking your FPS and having long loadscreens?
Vond replied to Vond's topic in General Game Discussion
I never use the ENB's fps limiter as it can cause some issues, but yeah good that you pointed it out. :) -
If you are currently locking your FPS to a max of 30, be it via Dxtory, Nvidia Inspector, FPS Limiter or whatever, and having extra long loadtimes, then simply try to change that max of 30 to any value between 32 and 35 instead. I learned about this earlier today, and once I tried all of a sudden my loadtimes sped up by atleast 5x. And before someone asks, the reason to lock your fps to ~30 is to get a stable FPS rather than one that fluctuates constantly, and it's a good number to keep it stable at.

Hmm, SMIM is in proper BAIN format. Or maybe I changed it myself long ago and forgot...

Upload optimized BSA's from the STEP wiki
Vond replied to AngryEeyore's question in General Skyrim LE Support
Ah, I see. Then it makes sense!https://forum.step-project.com/showthread.php?tid=228&pid=2909#pid2909 there you go Oh and to make it even easier for you, the missing 102 files are: All files inside ...interface\books All files in the root of textures (black.dds, greyscale.dds etc) ...clutter\common\hotiron01.dds
