  1. I use Microsoft Security Essentials myself but I also have Skyrim and ENB related files/folders excluded as a precaution though even before that I had no issue. The same went for SSME, MSE never flipped out on that as other security suites have reportedly done. There's a lot of crap-ware out there and also bloat-ware. I used Avast years ago, but put it out to pasture with Norton, McAfee & PCTools. If I want security theater, I'll go to an airport; don't want it on my PC. Boris has given his answer, it's his creation and he can implement it how he wishes. Curiously, I am in a weird place with the ExpandSystemMemoryX64 settings. Over the past 30 days or so, after much trial and error, I settled on ENB settings that work -as in no (ZERO) CTD's. This is a combination of efforts, I'm sure:  ditching troublesome mods, still have 187 installed SSME, 512/256 (384/256 works fine, but I set it back to Sheson Default during the CTD issue troubleshooting) enblocal.ini settings:[MEMORY] ExpandSystemMemoryX64=false ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true DisableDriverMemoryManager=false DisablePreloadToVRAM=false EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false ReservedMemorySizeMb=640 (I vary this from 128 to 768 at times if I notice a little stutter, doesn't seem to make a discernible difference) VideoMemorySizeMb=4095 EnableCompression=true AutodetectVideoMemorySize=false The enblocal settings seem to be the only settings that correlate with any problems I have. That problem being a short little stutter/halting right when I leave the Interior of Dragonsreach. My game is running so well now, I am fixated on that as an issue, lol! But, if I change ExpandSystemMemoryX64 to true I get a CTD within an hour so of play usually when using a gate to a city like Whiterun. So, no ctds = ExpandSystemMemoryX64 OFF for me. I think ENBoost's resource juggling is overly aggressive for my system and I just have a sweet spot without it. The explanation for what ExpandSystemMemoryX64 does never satisfied me (go figure) because Skyrim was already officially patched in Update 1.3.10: So, left with no CTD's for days and having a CTD within an hour or two of enabling the memory64 setting on the three occasions I have done so, I've just decided to leave it off for my modest system. This could potentially explain why every since I started using the Sheson-born solution, the ExpandSystemMemoryX64 has become problematic for me. One would think, that with all that creative resource juggling there is bound to be a few stomped toes and black-eyes between the two...but I simply can't say if that is so.
  2. @NodusCursorius Great writing, but I personally am not all that emotionally invested in the making of excuses for people. I chose my word usage for that purpose to illustrate the divide. Not enough people are learning the art of thinking for themselves, lack of time or other commitments is no legitimite excuse. We each have our own areas of focus in life, some of us will choose to skate by in some areas while others will invest all their time and energy fervently exploring those areas. No one is perfect or all-knowing, but all of us are mortal and so by nature limited in both resources and time. There will always be a conflict between the knowledgeable and the ignorant in these pursuits. The wise will seek out the truth of things, the less wise will stumble blindly never achieving an understanding. After all, wisdom is the measure of one's ability to use the knowledge, however limited, in a productive and fruitful manner. An ignorant man can also be wise if he is self aware of his limitations and honest in his pursuits. "ipse se nihil scire id unum sciat"
  3. @Aiyen Ah but there is conflict and chaos inflicted when information being released is contradictory. Simply look at what Boris has said: OK, but that flies in the face of the default settings and advice on the enbdev forums that Boris has handed out to some inquiring posters "just use default settings" on more than one occasion, indicating that those settings may have some purpose or benefit. Please don't misconstrue this as me ignoring the various permutations of system hardware and software, obviously bad RAM/VRAM or viruses will skew results. I'm simply suggesting a better communication regarding "best practices" with the underlying assumption that a person isn't using a broken computer. If ExpandSystemMemoryX64=true is universally good, then how about we have it default to true and not false? Why have it default to the "exception to the rule" ? Such things muddy the water.
  4. How important/necessary is it to turn vsync off in the skyrimprefs.ini just to turn it "on" in the enblocal.ini? I guess what I am asking, wouldn't it just be better to leave that skyrimprefs at the default value and let the enb sort it out?
  5. @NodusCursorius All great and valid points concerning the struggle between the "dumbing" down for the unwashed masses and the free exchange of tools for those ready, willing and responsible enough to use them properly. Obviously, I support the latter, and I generally despise being limited by any lowest common denominator type factor put in place simply to protect the innocently (willfully?) ignorant, so to speak. Mod Organizer has empowered me, that's all I care about. Power can be dangerous, the 3 year old with a loaded gun, probably not the best of ideas. Where before I had to take problems passively and often impotently waiting for someone else to fix them; I can now manipulate whole blocks of data streams and solve my own problems with very few exceptions. I've been liberated and I was too ignorant to realize it at first because I didn't fully understand MO or appreciate the power it was giving me.
  6. As always, clarity is your strong suit, Keith. But that's precisely what bugs me the most about the enb settings...it's not supposed to be voodoo (poor headless chickens) or inexplicably arbitrary. It should be fairly predictable and not wishy-washy. You know, kind of science based? Sure, one can tell people to adjust the setting for their particular machine and configuration, but there has to be some contiguous and shared objective reality...or it's simply chaos lol. I spent my early years editing batch files and trying to finagle ways to get more of that 640k memory available for my games and drivers to run at peak efficiency, lol. So, I am accustomed to the idea that switches do rational things, like an on or an off state. A = A, and not "for some people" A = B.
  7. Seems rather superfluous but maybe I haven't noticed the "micro-stutters" or hitches when just using the FPS Limit function built into the ENBseries. Lately I just keep vsync on (as always) and don't use the limiter because I've seen no real benefit to having it on with vsync. From enblocal.ini: [LIMITER] WaitBusyRenderer=false EnableFPSLimit=false FPSLimit=10.0
  8. It just seems similar to the decision the SKSE Team made to NOT include a default SKSE.ini file with install. O.o ...just asking for problems. Idiot-proof isn't a dirty word, imo. "ExpandSystemMemoryX64=false" makes no sense to me because Boris has stated on the "record" that everyone can benefit from that setting...even non-64 bit OS users. BUT, I am given pause now because he is making it default false...and playing with it on false I have noticed absolutely no detrimental effect on my game...
  9. Boris seems rather inscrutable at times, partially a language barrier and partially from just not adding remarks to changes to things. I read a lot on the official enbdev forums, so I don't consider myself oblivious. Some helpful peeps like Wolfgrimdark keep a running record of Boris commentary on settings...but it's like going to the Delphic Oracle at times... Take for instance the default enblocal.ini that comes with the latest enbseries_skyrim download from enbdev.com: [MEMORY] ExpandSystemMemoryX64=false <---- wtf? Isn't that a big deal, if something changed, is this no longer important to have enabled? (PS. counter intuitively, I am running this setting at "false" and I have noticed no detriment/issues). Maybe Boris changed this when Sheson's Memory Patch swept onto the scene? Then there's this which has bothered me: [ENGINE] EnableVSync=false <---all those poor slobs out there who used the "PresentInterval = 0 Tweak" have one less chance to have it corrected by the enb. Please take my editorial remarks in the spirit intended. I have huge respect for the irascible Boris but some things create confusion and perhaps contribute to his temperament...like that hard to find download button on his website page... :o
  10. I admire the ambition for such projects but in the end I feel they are too ambitious unless you have a whole team of modders working on it. I stopped using the various lighting overhauls (the ones that edit or place freakin' lights throughout the game) for the following reasons: * they are never finished and usually always WIP * even if actively developed, it means updating a most likely invasive mod into your current game * they mess with the gameworld too much and create conflict headaches * a good ENB will do a good lighting enhancement without editing cells Does anyone else feel this way about these types of projects? Take Static Mesh Improvement Mod. Genius and beautiful work, but it forces me onto a tightrope of worrying about texture/mesh conflicts, also it really stresses out the GPU for (I'd argue) a modicum of benefit. Before anyone thinks I'm some kind of mod prude, I run my game with 185 ESP's but I generally shy away from mods that tinker overly much (IMO) with the tender underbelly of the gameworld especially when the results don't stand up to the effort.
  11. Yeah, I really don't like the Steam mod acquisition system, but it present no real obstacles to acquiring mods if the Nexus doesn't host them. I prefer the Nexus to have a little competition, after all and Steam isn't exactly a fly-by-night enterprise. ;) ( man in a trench coat dispensing mods in a back alley, haha) On the subject of Follower Jon Battle-Born, I made my very first edit to a Skyrim mod...the mod author forgot to make it so that Jon would level with the player (PC Level Mult). After a little binging, I figured out how to change the esp. And, nothing has blown up! :)
  12. Ugh, that's a very short list of mods that use FISS: - Take Notes - Journal of the Dragonborn - MinimalHUD - Spellmaking in Skyrim - The last altar - Dynamic Potions - Poisons - Ingredients - Food But, it will catch on, just as MCM has started to do in a big way (finally).
  13. That's the wonderful thing about Mod Organizer...just plug and play for replacers. I'll try it out, see what it looks like in game. Looking at the files, it appears Better Signage is more complete in what it covers.
  14. Yes, that is the name of the mod, and it's on Steam only and not the Nexus. Jon Battle-Born Companion/Hearthfire Steward (DOES NOT REQUIRE HEARTHFIRE!!!) by UniversalGameplay I rarely go to Steam for any mods but I have been searching high and low for Jon Battle-Born related mods, I didn't find much. There's one follower addon for Jon on Nexus but it changes his looks and does other unsavory things. UniversalGameplay's mod simply adds Jon to the follower faction and has a very small footprint. I ran it through TESSEdit and there was nothing menacing. I must admit, I did finish the first part of the Missing in Action Quest before making him my follower, I pickpocketed the letter from him. But, it's all good, I gave the letter back to him after. :) Also, Jon and I will be soon be rescuing Thorald GreyMane - At that point, I will have single-handedly brought the two feuding factions together as comrades and brothers in arms. Screw you, Olfina, you hussy tramp! It's really easy to grab files off Steam and install them via Mod Organizer, let me know if you don't know how. I thumbed up the mod on Steam, sadly I had to unsubscribe to it so Steam's syncing wont mess with my mod management, but that's the only downside. Jon Battle-Born just helped me clear the Silent Moons Camp for a bounty. He wears his usual Iron Armor but he actually is more proficient in Light Armor, so I have him wearing Studded Leather now. I use Extensible Follower Framework (non-Beta) and everything works marvelously.
  15. There's some reports of re-equipping issues (Isoku reverted some changes in most recent update to address that) and some follower related problems. But, so far I've had no real issues that I can hang on this mod (though I tried lol -but troubleshooting eliminated it). I use the non-beta EFF, EFF has made any follower woes a thing of the past. I hope the new version doesn't jump any sharks.
  16. Well, the mod author states: I stopped using the massive sound overhaul type mods awhile back, I stick to the smaller scale ones, they seem to have less issues and better maintenance. Immersive Sounds - Magic by lazygecko Improved Combat Sounds by judgefredd Climates Of Tamriel - Sounds Better Animal Footsteps by Volnaiskra
  17. I really would like to see Skyrim Chimmeys make a comeback along with this type of mod solutions.
  18. I've been using SkyFix - Unique Inn Signs HD by CovertKish and the SkyFix - HD Blacksmith Signs also by CovertKish. It's interesting to compare the approach each mod author has taken on the same subject.
  19. OK, first things first...are you making certain you are running Skyrim from Mod Organizer and NOT the Steam Launcher? Second, all installed mods by Mod Organizer are kept in the Mod Organizer folders, not the Data folder of your Steam Installation. There should be no "mods" in the Skyrim Data folder; when you open up MO you should see all your mods.
  20. I use this little mod, it works without a hitch. It will (understandably) only work with vanilla/Dragonborn wells and not ones added by mods. It's very helpful when out of water and no Inns are available...also will save you some gold if you recycle/refill all those empty ale bottles instead using the barkeep.
  21. Thanks for the replies. @EssArrBee Yes, that was a goof on my part...both are "dummy" entries though. Braith's disappearing act is a gradual fade as she's walking away, then she's perma-invisible. I mean, I seen plenty of texture/mesh glitches but not one that impacts just one NPC (that I know of, other children/female NPC's are fine in Whiterun) and in this manner. @WilliamImm I felt a little like that when I first started using it...it does all these things behind the scenes hidden from view, a sneaky like...a kinda magic. But your reassurance further underscores my trust in the MO revolution of mod management. I know I don't have a mod that specifically modifies Braith other than Xvision Children - Redone by Bagserk and Bugsbugme. I am worried about the interaction between the new Unofficial Patches and Xvision. Xvision Children - Redone has a Unofficial Skyrim Patch compatibility patch which I use, I'm thinking it may need updated for the new patch version. But stranger things have been known to happened, I once found a mod that added a nice gate to Winterhold...but I discovered much later that it also broke the Riverwood Gate as a bonus. I'll take a look, I just would love to have the previous version of the patch to verify/troubleshoot/compare what has changed. (My SSD is cramped for space so i don't keep too many old files around) That brat Braith was working fine before. UPDATE: Appears the Xvision patch file for the Unofficial Skyrim Patch is the problem.
  22. I've only started using MO a month or so ago, it's ingenious and indispensable; there's no going back to another mod management system. I haven't had to perform the ritual of reinstalling Skyrim or 200+ mods since becoming a MO user. This brings me to the latest Unofficial Skyrim Patches... All were updated fairly recently, before starting a new game I decided to get all my patches updated. Now I have problems where I didn't have any before. (Braith NPC in Whiterun becomes totally to partially invisible is the main issue) Perusing the USP forums on Nexus I run across this "warning" : Well, that's just lovely! I always have MO unpack BSA's, it's one of its strengths and "de-complicates" mod installations. I don't have an issue with Dragon Souls, but I get the distinct impression that mentioning you are a user of Mod Organizer is a sure way to get sidelined when you make a post asking for help. Since updating my USP files (I don't have the old versions any more) I have also noticed that my bash patches are a lot more inclusive than before, the unofficial patches are including more tagsto be bashed in them. (I let Wrye Bash do its default thing plus some Tweaks) I use BOSS (BOSS sorts the new USP files incorrectly though) and clean my mods using Gopher's videos as a guide... My Mod Load Order that's served me well in the past, not shown is Skyrim Unbound which I had disabled for troubleshooting purposes. This NPC Braith Glitch thing isn't a game breaker but I don't like "mysterious" problems like this in a new game (I've tried several new game starts.) Braith is acting normally except for fading into invisibility, gradually from feet up and then, poof! Gone...but still there. If I kill her, she's no longer invisible. I'm tired of putting dozens of hours into a game and then hitting bug city, that's been mostly eliminated in the last month due to careful mod selection and recent memory fixes. But, it seems that the new USP has changed the chemistry of how my (usual) mods work. Any advice, comments, rants are welcome! Thanks!
