^^ Yes that is what should happen - But there is a bug with Win 10 that sometimes prevents anything from responding when you click the gear icon Then you are left with the option of turning off Web Search via GPedit.msc ( because you cannot use the settings dialogue you need to find another route to switch it off ) And then if you do not have Professional edition of windows ... You cannot use GPedit either ( GPedit is not in Home or Premium editions of windows ) Thats where the Registry Keys come into play, for people unfortunate enough to find themselves in that predicament I was in with the family desktop - Once you set the registry keys as admin, Web Search is turned off across the board for anyone using the same computer ( all Local Accounts ) Anyone with the problem will understand the value of those registry keys back in post #197 as an aid to get rid of web search :) ( it will be their only option )
-
Yes, but see the thing with the search box is, by default it searches the Web ( instead of the old expected behaviour of just searching the machine ) .. So to set that so it does not search the web ( yeah I know I didnt make that clear in my last post ), you should be able to access the Gear Icon in the big box .. .. In some cases ( as explained it happened on just one of our machines out of the four we have ) you cant. My last post is for the benefit of anyone else with the same problems as described ( not able to access the Gear Icon and also not able to use gpedit.msc - So Registry hack provided to do the same job of turning off the web search ). It will be of no use for most people

Reference guides : Keep an eye on the following page for a Win 10 specific guide https://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html They are usually very good, even just the Regular text only versions. ------------ Anyone out there got problems with Windows 10 Search Box ? .. or rather, problems getting to its settings to switch it off ? Normally ( and this worked for three of the machines in our house ) - Click the Search Bar ( or Icon depending on what you have set it to in the right click menu ), and the big window which opens up to show search results has a Gear icon on the left hand side The Gear icon opens up search settings where you can switch off : But we had one machine which just did nothing when clicking on the Gear Icon Because it windows 10 premium ( not professional ), we did not have access to the Group Policy Editor ( gpedit.msc ) So could not get around the lack of a settings menu with that method either Solution : A Registry hack Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search] "DisableWebSearch"=dword:00000001 "ConnectedSearchUseWeb"=dword:00000000 "ConnectedSearchUseWebOverMeteredConnections"=dword:00000000Put the above in a file called Win10SwitchOffWebSearch.reg And then double click it to install the registry keys. Sign out of windows, log back in and have a look at your search bar which will no longer say "Search the Web and Windows", it will just say "Search Windows" Heres the file already made, and it worked for our multi-user setup desktop which was the problem machine for us. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/86040572/Win10RegKeysHacks.7z Extract the archive with 7Zip or WinRAR, and just double click the files, say yes to the windows prompt There are a couple more reg keys in the zip too, Win 10 has a Dark and Light theme for App backgrounds ( Like the Windows 10 Calculator, or the background on the new look Settings screen ) Double click the Dark one to set it to Dark, and the other one to put it back to the default normal colour

Windows 10 .. I'm a convert. Lots of stuff needs tamed, but there isnt anything you cant switch off ( When installing Win 10 dont let it do the Express setup, get the options to switch all that rubbish off - This can be done afterwards aswell, but then windows will already be having a ball uploading as much as it can to the cloud if you have let it, not only that but its a bit of a bandwidth hog by default ) Settings, Privacy, off to everything - And after a few windows updates, revisit them to switch off even more crap My Hard drive light and WIFI busy indicator are now back to their usual, barely any activity that I am not expecting to be happening. Theres a lot of tiles doing flip flop animations and cartwheels in the Start menu by default too, all of that can be deactivated with a right click and also removed ( Unpinned ), to be replaced by useful things from the "All Apps" list, like Run, Calc, Command Prompt ( which you can still elevate with a right click ) I'm comfortable with it already. So long as you dont use a Microsoft account, and just use a Local Account like we always have, then a lot of what Cortana and the OneDrive service try to do become useless because they need you to be using a Microsoft Account for them to work. That OneDrive service too will be an Icon in your SysTray ( Bottom right of windows, you might have to expand the Arrow to see it ) - If you right click it and choose settings, you can get it to not auto start when windows loads. If you have a machine with multiple user accounts ( local accounts ) .. Standby for lots of redoing all the above :scared: The only downside I dont like to Win 10 is not having so much control over what installs with Windows Updates The rest is easily tamed with a bit of finding where things are at now. Oh and if you want to see filename extensions, open an explorer window, and expand the view ribbon at the top, on one of those tabs you can put a tick in a box to see dot three letter extensions -------------------- Those NVidia Reference Drivers mentioned earlier for older graphics cards on laptops .. Working great for all games here :) Edit : Forgot to mention, the Search window, when its up, if the default of it searching the web is as annoying as it was for me - Click the Gear Icon so you can switch of the Web Search, and just have it search your machine. This may not work initially, but there have been some updates since which sort out that problem of not being able to access the Gear icon, so just wait for windows to update and give it another shot later.

Couple more notes for anyone upgrading from Win 7 or earlier, and with older graphics cards : -------------- 1. Windows 10 has Microsoft Security Essentials installed and running by default ( same deal as Win 8 ) .. .. Its now known as Windows Defender ( MSSE replaced the old Vista / 7 Defender, but kept the old name instead of calling it what it is ) So you have rudimentary realtime malware protection installed and running by default, checking your emails and downloads as they come in. MalwarebytesAntimalware has been updated to be compatible with Win 10 aswell, which is nice to have installed as a second opinion to Defender ( MSSE ) So thats one bit of good news for Win 10. The two work well together in my experience with them both on Win 7. Though good online practices are still the best prevention ( no pr0n / w4r3z / multiple advertising methods getting hooks into your system ) ------------------------ 2. NVidia have done one last reference driver update for old laptop graphics card, which is Windows 10 compatible That would have been the last hurdle to overcome somehow otherwise. For anyone else with an old NVidia Graphics card - Have a search here : https://www.geforce.com/Drivers Just click the boxes in the Manual Driver Search section for your card, Windows 10 ( 32 bit or 64 bit ) And you should find - Reference Drivers version 341.74 Supported Products : Quite recently the last couple of NVidia driver updates before Windows 10 my old GeForce 8600M GS card fell off the end of the list of supported graphics cards, but thankfully it seems they have probably realised that would stop a lot of people being able to update to Win 10 with old cards in laptops. I just updated all other machines in the house today, and was dreading trying Win 10 on my own laptop until I found out about this Fingers crossed its a good set of drivers -------------- 3. I havent had to use any Microsoft Accounts on any of the machines I upgraded :) ( Refer to post #180 and Local Account creation - In situ upgrades use accounts already created ( even for multi-user setups such as our desktop ) ... PITA going through all the Privacy Options for everyone repeatedly after the upgrade, but for everyone in our household the transition has been pretty good on a desktop and one laptop so far .. My laptop machine is in progress ).

Microsoft account is todays equivalent of the old windows Live accounts And they have it as a requirement by default so that MS get to hoover up your data, when you sign into windows, where from etc etc, its also an enabler for the MS Cloud services to work ... Introduced in Win 8 You need to find the option to let you use a "Local Account" instead ( the new equivalent of a windows 7 Admin / Limited User Account ) When it asks you for your email address ( MS Account ), look at the bottom for an option "Dont have an account" Then at the bottom of the next dialogue where you are encouraged to make an account look for another faded option which says : "Sign in without a Microsoft Account" Then you should be able to "Create a Local Account" If not .. back up, enter a fake email address which you can be sure does not exist, press enter and the dialogue will say your email is unrecognised or similar, and underneath that it will also say "Continue without a Microsoft Account" .. Another way of getting to the same Create a Local Account option. It was the same on Win 8 / 8.1, I had the pleasure of having to find out how to avoid those options on my youngests new laptop. To create more accounts on the same machine as Local User Accounts, see this article .. https://windows.microsoft.com/en-my/windows-10/create-a-local-user-account-in-windows-10

Cool, do you really need to set DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=1024 ? Leaving it at 768 should be okay looking at your memoryblockslog

Adding to what Tech just said - Windows by default hides file type extensions ( Dot three letters, like .ini .txt .doc ) So if you name a file SKSE.ini, it may actually be named SKSE.ini.txt .. You just cant see the .txt part ( because windows is hiding it ), and so it will not work as the ini file SKSE would expect to find Have those dot extensions show all the time so that you are sure you know what file type a file really is ( and you dont get fooled by crafted file icons making a malware.exe for example look a lot more innocent than it is .. Think email attachments ;) ) Innocent-attachment-with-a-notepad-icon.txt <insert lots of spaces here> .exe https://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions

NVidia .. ooh crap, that might be bad for my old laptop, if I update to Win 10, and NVidia with the more recent updates no longer supports my video card, then I may be stuck with drivers which do not work properly on the new OS update. Thats a bit unfortunate. I forget which driver number it was but its only a few version ago where support for old laptop Geforce 8600M cards became no longer supported by driver updates. So I am now permanently stuck with old NVidia drivers on that machine. Oh well see what happens, its probably just the extra fluff NVidia installs these days which we dont need being incompatible with Win 10, but the drivers will be okay, worst case scenario .. re-install from my win 7 disks afterwards and deny any updates. I really ought to get a new laptop someday :)

Anyone had anything happening yet ? 29th was supposed to be the beginning of this update rolling out, no doubt it will be in stages and / or regional so as to spread the bandwidth load across the internet - Nothing happened on my machine yet. But then the 29th in the US has just begun at time of writing it will be early part of the day for Microsoft US ( assuming that is where this rollout is being controlled from overall ).

Did you choose a green category label to make the issue in ? I just tried and did not get any errors ( though I did not post an issue completely, just went through the motions of creating one )

:) Thank you. Also I squished a user uploaded image a few days ago, forgot to mention It was a lady with way too much hangin' out, holding what looked like the top edge of a giant slice of Pizza - I assumed it was some form of advertising spam .. definitely off topic visually anyway for The Ruffled Feather .. But apologies if you wanted the pleasure of culling such things, or if it was a special delivery for mod authors .. Like a more realistic looking cookie emote, but with Pizza, and erm .. other attributes- 307 replies

Bloody hell, sometimes Skyrim is infuriating : Sorry SP but I cant reproduce my earlier problem. What I described earlier I could reproduce after going back into the game .. .. Now however, no matter what combination of WATER files I have installed, plugin without worldspace edits, or the Legendary one ( even without my reduced textures or with, without the meshes or with .. I can no longer reproduce any slow down in the areas previously affected ( I loaded up the save I kept next to the small waterfall in Lost Knife Hideout, plus went around a couple other places previously affected .. nada ) I am probably just going to have to put this down to Skyrim being Skyrim Apologies for any undue concern caused. I do already have a few plugins on the go with my own ideas for flow, spent quite a lot of time yesterday looking into doing my own plugins ( after wrestling with the Creation Kits quirks I had forgotten about like not allowing multiple masters by default, weird decision ) .. But it seems I may not need to do them after all .. Back to more testing  @ Tech - I let Utumno know about the problem found earlier today with Wrye Bash development builds and the back button issue in the Wizard https://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1525110-wrye-bash-thread-104/page-2?do=findComment&comment=24180058 But looks like it will be 307 before that gets fixed .. So if there are any Wrye Bash users complaining about sub-packages being selected that should not be, then point them at the Wrye Bash issue and tell them not to use the Back button in wizards, currently it gets a bit confused if you go back and forth in the Wizard.- 307 replies

@ SP Yeah I'm not getting what the problem is either, I have a separate BAIN with Reduced WATER textures to overwrite the Ruffled Feather install of the same textures ( I put all the ones I normally reduce through Photoshop and preserved the same format of DDS in each case after any reductions made ) .. .. So on the texture front its not a problem for my aged laptop, I have that aspect covered. But my desktop has plenty of VRAM, and its quite a bit under used ( I dont have the Hi Res packs installed which it is more than capable of handling ) .. And although the problem is markedly reduced on that machine, its still slightly detectable. I wondered if you had done any mesh chopping and ran them all through Antons Nif Healer https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/61685/? .. I also checked them out in the dev version of NifSkope 2 https://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/topic/4136-nifskope-20-dev/ .. Found no problems that I could think of. Ah well. Do you know of anyone who has just made a mod which corrects water flow only ? ( ie - vanilla Water flow direction going underneath the land sideways in a lot of places instead of following the direction the river is going ), thats all I really want out of a water mod. The water being calmer in tidal areas like Solitude's water front makes sense to be included aswell. Is it all just about those Noise edits ?, or are meshes a part of flow direction problems too ?- 307 replies

Unofficial Skyrim Patch: Unable to move up in Load Order
alt3rn1ty replied to bistro1138's question in Mod Organizer Support
Or you could use Nexus Mod Manager or Wrye Bash to manage your mods instead which : A ) Dont have a problem with 32 bit integers B ) Work on older versions of Windows If you are stuck with an old Windows, so cannot use the version of MO which has fixed this problem managing the Unofficial patches - Use a different mod manager Simple. -

Can anyone else corroborate a problem with WATER installed Go to Lost Knife Cave, and make your way through to Lost Knife Hideout After you come across a couple of bandits near some archery targets, you will then follow a tunnel which has a water fall in the middle of it, before you get to an area with multiple bandits and a Sabre tooth cat in a cage .. That waterfall in the tunnel causes a bit of lag when you are in its vicinity I have experienced this lag in other places around Skyrim since using WATER, so decided to uninstall WATER and try without .. All spurious occurences of lag are now gone. Screenshots Could it be the meshes for water effects in these areas, or the animation .. Any other suggestions because I would really like to solve this, I miss having WATER installed ( vanilla water flow drives me nuts ). Active Mod Files ( sans WATER ) - Providing this in case anyone is curious .. Non of my load order in combination with WATER as far as I know would cause any kind of lag :- 307 replies

On behalf of a nexus user of the UnOfficial Patches, can anyone answer what his possible problem is .. Richardo11 in this post https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/456679-unofficial-skyrim-patch/page-972&do=findComment&comment=26994914 I will tell him to watch this post for replies, but this one seems odd in that he has updated MO and is now having load order problems, whereas the reverse would ordinarily be the case ( Old versions of MO not coping with the new unofficial patches header data size ). Maybe he updated to the newest version of MO which applies for his system ( if constrained by Win XP or something similar ), so will not be updated to the newest MO which actually fixes the problem ?, and has also recently updated USKP from an older version which did not have such a heavy header data and therefore was not causing problems for the older MO that he had installed before .. Just guessing here because the above quote is all the information we have so far. ( And apologies for my ignorance if this would be better posted elsewhere - I still just use Wrye Bash )
-
The amount of people dependant upon Arthmoors skills and machine setup working properly is immense .. Just the USKP which is the most complicated involvement has had nearly 3 million 'unique' downloads. I think I would get a bit ruffled at Microsoft doing things with my machine without a 'by your leave' aswell. Edit : Not in the US here.

If you are among people who do not want this to install, but having trouble preventing it as being discussed here https://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/topic/4193-windows-10/page-2&do=findComment&comment=156044 Arthmoor and Pete had the thing come back even though they have NOT consented to reserving a copy of windows 10 Reproducing my post : I have a trick which could help - I have tried the technique on other things before and it works really well .. but not on Microsofts Win 10 update mechanism - So use at your own risk ( I havent tried because I am letting the update go ahead before I decide to bin it, I have Win 7 on OS Disks to re-install for game setups and dual boot Linux afterwards which will be the only OS allowed online in that case ) : First you need to ensure you untick "Hide Extensions for known File Types" in Control Panel Folder Options ( if you dont you will not be able to rename a file with no dot extension, windows makes them automatically when they are hidden depending upon the file type being made ) Folders cannot be created if they already exist, you cannot create a folder with the same name in the same place : So where you used to have a folder, create a file with the same name ( an empty foldername.txt will do ) Then rename the file to just foldername without the dot and three letter extension ( so delete the .txt from the name ) Windows will not allow a folder and file with exactly the same name either .. yeah yeah go away windows Now anything which tries to install / download / save to that folder - will go to null / oblivion / sithis / the tooth fairy .. who cares it works You just created a black hole for any files sent to that folder - because that file cannot function as a folder, and windows cannot create a folder of the same name .. Which the installation believes is already created. So for GWX : Delete GWX folder, make a file called GWX.txt in the same location, rename it GWX as in the above screenshot, but in the following location .. C:\windows\System32\GWX\ <-- Delete this Folder becomes C:\windows\System32\GWX <-- File Now you dont need to periodically check if Get Windows 10 folder has been filled up again, windows cant put anything in it. Note : To delete the GWX folder you may need to take ownership of the folder and its contents .. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx .. and probably uninstall the windows updates first which are enforcing the setup .. A few more tips here including a registry key and a batch file someone did to remove the updates which are now four in number apparently https://superuser.com/questions/922068/how-to-disable-the-get-windows-10-icon-shown-in-the-notification-area-tray KB2952664 - Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7KB2990214 - Update that enables you to upgrade from Windows 7 to a later version of WindowsKB3022345 - Update to enable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in WindowsKB3035583 - Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 MS are probably doing the old "new version of an update" trick which circumvents people right clicking and hiding the updates, they did that with silverlight in the past so that it keeps coming back on the list of updates .. Hence the folder null device above could prove useful.
-
Excellent, thanks Greg, now hopefully anything which is not actually part of the OS but installed as an update will be listed there in future. That Search the internet with Bing instead of search windows is also going to be for the chop when Win 10 installs, along with the actual bing search engine browser plugin.
-
No problems here .. Maybe a MO thing ? .. and you mean when you click the Blue tick right ? ( the green tick on the left of the card just indicates the plugin is active ) Have you tried Drag n Drop ? https://i.imgur.com/OD6xEgO.jpg In that screenshot I use it to get Relighting Skyrim to Load After Colourful Lights no shadows ( so RS lighting changes win .. then I have Mator Smash import the no shadows record changes to up the performance again indoors )
