Question

I just started the guide yesterday and have finished up the Core UI mods and am at the point where Vault Boy says to boot up the game. I am pretty sure I have done everything right and everything the guide says, but the text is cutoff in the menu and acting a bit weird in-game.

It likely is a case of me doing something wrong rather than not doing something, but I am unsure. I did all the DarnUI stuff and DarnUI patches etc.

Also, I should always launch FOSE from Mod Organizer if I want to play the game correct?

The "DarnUI Support for FWE" doesn't show up in the left pane of MO in the screenshot image and it should if it is installed in the correct place. The installation order and the instructions in the guide take care of putting the mods in the correct order for use with UIO. I tried to avoid putting a detailed explanation of what UIO does into the guide, but I did revise some installation instructions (especially for aHUD) to eliminate some problems that users seem to have all too frequently. The "DarnUI Support for FWE" files, especially "menus\main\hud_main_menu.xml", need to be installed where the guide says since this is the primary menu template file that UIO will detect and modify. This isn't an issue with INI files; UIO (and Unified HUD that used to be in the guide) need to be able to find (and then modify) the proper version of "menus\main\hud_main_menu.xml". After the game has started at least once with UIO installed you will find extra lines  that start with "include" added to this file near the bottom.

You forgot the "DarnUI Support for FWE" file that should be installed just before Adjustable HUD as per the guide. This is an optional file in the FWE mod, but it is installed after the FWE mod. This is likely to be the cause of your problem.

Is this happening only in the main menu or is it happening all over the game? If it is just the main menu then one file is overriding the Darnified UI menu file. If it is the entire game then that means that UIO is for whatever reason not injecting the Darnified UI fonts when you launch the game via NVSE. While I am not an expert when it comes to Fallout 3, I think this might happen if UIO is not being given the correct permissions to modify a certain file. In this case that would be the Fallout.ini file. While this has never happened to me, I have read it happening to others. You may wish to try going into [Mod Organizer>Profiles>Your Profile] and just double checking that the Fallout.ini file is not set to "read only." That is the only idea I have right now and if I come up with anything else I will let you know.

This was indeed the solution.

But I am confused, as it says in the INI Tweaks section to set them as read only?

I believe that it merged with DarnUI or FWE....possibly. But the UI and everything appears to be fine in-game, so maybe it is alright? I don't really understand the rest of what you said, being the newb that I am, sorry.

All I know is that I followed the guide exactly, so I did all the extra steps with 'aHUD' and whatnot.

I made the INI's in my MO profiles read only

Installed 'DarnUI Support for FWE' right before 'aHUD' and I possibly merged the 'DarnUI Support for FWE' with either DarnUI or FWE (if i recall correctly)

Started game and UI messed up

Unchecked the read only setting for the INIs in all my MO profiles

UI and HUD worked fine

Don't merge the  "DarnUI Support for FWE" mod with the rest of FWE; that is why it has it's own spot in the install order. If the UI is OK (make sure to check aHUD functionality to move menus) then don't worry about it for now.
