Dynamic Distant Objects LOD - DynDOLOD 2.00 to 2.15

sheson

Question

Today marks the two years anniversary of my first post of this thread, so it seemed like a good opportunity to publish the ...

DynDOLOD 2.18

Refer to the newly created videos for MO and NMM below, they should explain the entire process adequately so you know what to expect. The included manual is all updated as well with the new instructions and the new videos. DynDOLOD Guide for Wrye Bash users by alt3rn1ty is all updated as well.

What’s New?

DynDOLOD 2.xx marks the change from a collection of pas scripts for xEdit.exe to a standalone version containing all the required tools in one archive. There now are a DynDOLOD.exe and a TexGen.exe to start the processes. In addition, resources and patches are separated into different downloads for easier installation and maintenance.

Overall the requirements, installation and process to generate LOD are basically the same. The key changes are, that there is no more xEdit required, the patcher now installs into its own folder and the installation of the meshes/texture resources, options or patches just became easier. There is no more default DynDOLOD.esp/bak - it will just be created if needed.

While technically the LOD generated by 2.xx is generally the same compared to 1.xx there have been also the typical updates to better support mods. See the list below in the section "The usual updates" and the fixes and changelogs.

There is typically no need to update or generate LOD from scratch for an existing save game just because there is a new DynDOLOD Standalone 2.xx or a new DynDOLOD Resources 2.xx.

Check the list of "The usual updates" below, if a mod which you are using was added recently. Consider updating or generating LOD from scratch in case you notice missing LOD.

Important

DynDOLOD 2.xx requires an installation from scratch when updating from an older 1.xx version. All former files - meshes, textures, scripts etc. plus all generated LOD should be removed first. Existing files installed to xEdit\Edit Scripts\* do not matter anymore and should not have any effect on the new DynDOLOD standalone if you install it into a new folder. Since LOD generated with older versions will not work with the papyrus scripts from DynDOLOD 2.xx, remove older versions of the patcher from the xEdit folder.

If an existing save is updated with a DynDOLOD.esp generated from scratch, follow the “clean save cycle: first deactivate DynDOLOD from MCM, wait for deactivation message, go into interior, check MCM DynDOLOD is still deactivated, save, exit game. Remove old DynDOLOD.esp, remove old scripts and remove old meshes/skse/textures. Start game, load last save, wait a bit, save again. Install the new papyrus scripts, the new DynDOLOD.esp and the new generated LOD. Enable the new DynDOLOD.esp. Start game, load the last save, go outside. DynDOLOD should initialize by itself, else activate from MCM.

Before running DynDOLOD.exe, please make sure the CPU is properly cooled and in case it is overclocked, it is verified to be stable. Some routines make use of all cores at times and several LODGen.exe processes are started in parallel when generating for multiple worlds at once.

Download

DynDOLOD 2.18 - Download from Mega, Nexus

Required. Contains DynDOLOD.exe and TexGen.exe and their supporting files, including all documentation including instructions for ‘trees.ultra’

It is recommended to first remove all files and folders from older versions and then install into a new folder that is outside game, program files and mod manager folders.

DynDOLOD Resources 2.18 - Download from Mega, Nexus

Required. Contains the required 'Core Files' like meshes, textures, papyrus scripts to generate LOD and use it in the game. It also contains the optionals like Whiterun Exterior etc.

If updating from older versions to 2.15 or higher it is recommended to first uninstall older 'Core Files' Textures (or simply everything) for best results. Otherwise simply overwrite older 2.xx versions.

Make sure to have matching or higher DynDOLOD Standalone version when generating LOD.

DynDOLOD Patches 2.18 - Download from Mega, Nexus

Contains the patches for some of the mods listed under 'Some Assembly Required' - download if needed.

Instructions

Please check DynDOLOD_QuickStart.html, Docs\DynDOLOD_Manual.html and videos for updated instructions. Here is the quick synopsis:

Requirements

SKSE, PapyrusUtil 2.8 or higher, vanilla billboards from TES5LODGen or Indistinguishable Vanilla Tree Billboards plus billboards for any tree mod.

Installation

Install SKSE and PapyrusUtil.

Install DynDOLOD.exe, TexGen.exe and all supporting folders/files from the DynDOLOD 2.00 archive into a new folder of your choice.

Install 'Core Files' from the DynDOLOD Resources archive into the game / mod manager overwriting everything.

Install patches from the DynDOLOD Patches archive if needed into the game / mod manager overwriting everything.

Install billboards into the game / mod manager overwriting DynDOLOD Resources

Generation

Execute TexGen.exe to update a limited list of LOD textures in case texture replacer mods are used. Before running TexGen again, remove textures from earlier generation.

Install generated LOD textures from output folder into the game / mod manager overwriting DynDOLOD Resources.

Execute DynDOLOD.exe to generated tree, static and dynamic LOD.

If there is no DynDOLOD.esp in the load order it will be created from scratch. You can only update existing DynDOLOD.esp created with 2.00.

Run the process as normal. Once it finished Save & Exit.

Install generated DynDOLOD.esp, meshes, skse and textures folder from the output folder into the game / mod manager overwriting everything.

Let LOOT sort DynDOLOD.esp.

I am impressed. You must have worked very hard to not read the update post, not watch the video, not read the MCM and not RTFM.

Post the exact error messages. Check the MCM for the last message and pay attention to any preceding messages. Messages repeat when moving around in the exterior world.

Make sure the esp and json files belong together and no old versions overwrite anything. Check MCM Information page that the bunch of numbers matches.

Redo the clean save and use a save cleaner to remove any renaming data/scripts if there are any.

Thanks for your help, regardless of the sarcasm.  Yeah, my bad...  Actually, I'm rather new to skyrim modding..  The SR:LE guide provided little info on how to update DynDOLOD and I went to the MCM of dyndolod the first time after reading a post from you helping a similar issue around page 50 on this thread.

Anyway, my fault...

I checked the bunch of numbers, and they all match... however, the third one is empty or n/a...

The exact error message are can not find master data in DynDOLOD_Tamriel.json and can not read master data in DynDOLOD_Tamriel.json.

When you say redo the clean save, you mean unticking DynDOLOD.esp in MO and saving my game again?  And using a save cleaner, do you have one to recommend?  I heard bad things about those.  How would I know which thing to remove from my save?  I figure the save cleaner will tell me this is renaming data and/or scripts?

Thanks...

I had very little crash to desktop prior to running into this issue, if any... now, it happens quite regularly... Can it be related?

I checked the bunch of numbers, and they all match... however, the third one is empty or n/a...

Focus on fixing this first. "DynDOLOD_Tamriel.json" should be the header for the third entry.

If this is n/a it means there is a problem with the file skse\plugins\StorageUtilData\DynDOLOD_Tamriel.json

It is either because it is missing, or can not be read because of file access problems or the data in the file is corrupt.

If it is the first, generate LOD from scratch. Remove all files from older generation and then add all new files from output folder.

If the file seems to be there, double check in right pane of MO, data tab. Check error log of MO. Reboot/Restart might fix any case of other program blocking access

If it may be the third, you can check the content of the file is valid with a online json validator. Open file in notebad and copy/paste the text, click Validate JSON. If it doesn't validate and you know JSON data format you might be able to fix, otherwise generate LOD from scratch. Remove all files from older generation and then add all new files from output folder.

Once all files are in order, start new game with coc whiterun from main menu. If it works then, it should work with a clean save. Only if that doesn't we can worry about further working on the save.

I checked in StorageUtilData and there were no DynDOLOD_Tamriel.json.  Only an objects one.

So I removed everything generated by DynDOLOD, restarted MO, and ran both texgen and dyndolod again.

Prior to doing this, I saved my game without DynDOLOD.esp loaded, inside an house.  The honningbrew meadery.

After copying the generated files to my mods folder and restarting MO again, and made sure that DynDOLOD.esp was loaded, I loaded my game, and for some reasons, there were no DynDOLOD in MCM.

Reloading my savegame worked, but this time, I'm getting the same errors messages, but with the file DynDOLOD_.json and the objects version as well.  In MCM, now in 3rd and 4th position are this DynDOLOD_.json files...

I'm sorry to take away some of your time debugging stupid stuff like that, but I really appreciate the help.

EDIT:  I'm sorry, I did not understand what you meant by coc whiterun in the mainmenu...  but as my savegame was "clean", I believe, it was saved inside an house, without DynDOLOD.esp, so I figure that's what you mean by clean, I thought to give it a try.

I need to know if you can update DynDOLOD to cater to the mods that were recently downloaded instead of fully uninstalling it and reinstalling it. I haven't been able to find information on anything like that. Based on TESEdit and several of my mods in it, my Skyrim worldspace is missing "MHDT - Max Height Data" for the Skyrim.esm. I believe that is my reason for my constant crashes in the Skyrim worldspace. I hope there is an easier way to fix that without uninstalling DynDOLOD and reinstalling it because it may be rather risky. Y'all created a breathtaking mod that goes way over my head when it comes to how it works so I hope y'all can help me soon.

Did you leave the interior? Otherwise you seem to mess up your installation by doing something weird. Like a json file going missing for example seems really odd. Make sure to not generate into any game or MO folders. Check there are interfering json files in overwrite or in any other mod folder.

open console in main menu and type

coc whiterun

to start a new game for testing purposes.

You have not been able to find the section "Updating" in the ../DynDOLOD/Docs/DynDOLOD_Manual.html? Granted it doesn't mention anything about cell data. That is because your case doesn't seem to make sense. Is the problem related to a mod and dragon flight?

MHDT - Max Height Data is in Skyrim.esm for many cells. It can not go missing. There might be cells that do not have height data. I never read about or experienced any crashes if the data is not present.

Did you check if the data is missing for certain cells? How do you determine if that data is not present for a cell it can cause crashes?

If you add a mod that updates cell data, and this cell without that data is already in DynDOLOD.esp, sort this mod to load after DynDOLOD.esp. If height data is just added/updated for a few cells you could manually update cell records in DynDOLOD.esp with xEdit. Otherwise you have to generate DynDOLOD from scratch. Updating is not risky if following the instructions.

I've installed DynDOLOD according to the gamerpoets guide, but on some objects that are used by dyndolod, the textures are purple, as well as most animals in my game have the missing purple texture. I'm using a lot of textures mods, but I have usd texgen and I think I have the right MO priorities, but I think it could have something to do with Automatic Variants, which I'm running through SUM. I know that it's DynDOLOD being in my load order that's causing it since when I deactivate it my textures are fine, and Automatic Variants functions correctly too. Any help is appreciated, I'd love to get this mod to work, and I have before, but never had this glitch.

DynDOLOD can not make texture files go missing. DynDLOD might use models including from other mods, which use textures that are missing.

Make sure to install and keep the DynDOLOD Resource Core Files in the load order.

DynDOLOD.exe might even report if some textures are missing while creating the LOD texture atlas. So check ..\DynDOLOD\Logs\TES5Edit_log.txt for those.

Missing textures are file not found errors that you need to fix on your end.

Hi Sheson,

Whilst generating the ultra tree lods I ran into a small problem with "detailed whiterun". Basically, the trees from that mod aren't visible from outside Whiterun.  I had a look in TES5Edit and noticed the "is full lod" flag is set on trees in cell/persistent and wasn't sure if I should edit/delete something here so I can view detailed whiteruns tree lod? If you could point me in the right direction that would be very helpful.

Cheers

Bill

Burn such mods with fire and put in every black list. Mods should not toggle full lod flag on objects except for a very few cases. Generic trees are definitely not that case. Even though due to a bug in engine the only way to make trees inside cities visible from afar is by using flag, it is still a horrible thing to do.

This single mod will reduce FPS and consume memory even when you are miles away from Whiterun on the other side of the world.

By default trees in cities are ignored because of the tree LOD engine limitation with child worlds. Open ..\DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD\DynDOLOD_TES5.ini in notepad and find the line

Ignore=treereach, treepine, treeaspen, ...

and remove the first three entries. Then generate LOD and see what happens. Let me know if the result is OK or not. It should convert the full LOD flag trees to static LOD and then behave normal without issue.

Hello,

im running into an error that i apparently don't have the DynDOLOD resource files installed. I followed the tutorial so far (at least i think i did every step) but i can't figure out what i'm doing wrong.

I'll attach my log file.

EDIT:

Already ran TexGen and added the textures as a mod.

File not found errors happen because files are not found. You should re-download and re-install the DynDOLOD Resource Core files. Double check that whatever mod manager you are using is actually extracting and installing the files correctly.

Hello, i have the persistent errors

"Exception in unit userscript line 513: Access violation at address 0040A9F2 in module 'TexGen.exe'. Write of address 00610066"

and

"Exception in unit userscript line 324: Access violation at address 0040A9F2 in module 'DynDOLOD.exe'. Write of address 00610066"

I have attached the logs after the unsuccessful execution of both programs, zipped because of space. TES5Edit Logs.7z.

I have tried setting the output outside of 'Program Files (x86)', and all it does is change the first address. The second one stays the same.

I have scanned this thread for a solution but all i got was something about overclocking (?). I haven't OC'd anything in this box.

Thank you for your time.

IT WORKED!!!

Thankyou, thats done the job and I haven't noticed any decrease in performance, any drop in FPS, increased stutters etc.  In fact, if anything its even a little bit smoother which I don't understand. I get what Zilav is saying about lost FPS etc but I've got a decent beefy rig so unless it breaks my save, this is a keeper.

Also, I've made ultra lods for the Oak trees, works beautifully, no performance loss and perfect colouring, will PM you.

Thanks for your help as always.

Looks great. That's just the thing, DynDOLOD took care of the old way the mod did it. So you gain some performance back from that.
