Everything is so... cheap... I must have...

There is a lot of discussion around donations but what about ad-based revenue? I remember that being said but not discussed, are there any problems with it?

Getting better and better...
-
If those had been posted in nexus they'd have been buried like rubble or some author would've helped them (since some stuff is decent/good quality but very bad implemented). Without even a review/QA system for paid mods this will happen all the time, although I'm not really seeing an alternative to letting the general population have access to the mod beforehand. Any suggestions? :/

After all of this, I agree (sort of). The point people are raising here is that since so little was thought about for this launch, are we to believe they'll improve later (when the SW has remained poop sine it's launch) Also, about the shadowscale armour, I have to say I predicted that in the IRC xD
-
No, they actually pay you directly to your bank account. I was actually surprised they didn't do it to the steam wallet o.0
-
Yes, on Wet and Cold alone he has made a bit over 100€

So far all I can see is Valve's greed and modders getting screwed. The end user will pirate mods (yes this will happen, I have already found them all), Valve will get the money and screw over modders (see: Chesko, started on day 1) which will get next to nothing once they find out they've delivered all they've done to Valve and users are pirating their mods. I know that no one really knows how to react to this and everyone is struggling with it in their own way, but it IS real and here to stay. Just hope it happens like I said and nexus implements ad-based revenue (an ad appearing while you are downloading doesn't even impede you in any way and is much better than the youtube system). To finish, a comment from a pirate that I found wonderful:
-
Haha, pirate at will! :D Ikr, my phone is now skipping every two posts. It has the feel of being rushed, much like Skyrim itself was. They are using an incredibly simple model which cannot be applied AT ALL to mods. Clearly made by someone who is not used to dealing with mods or just believes mods are plug n' play, like dota 2.
-
Thanks Ess, that definitely needs to be stickied EVERYWHERE. Now, everyone update your mod descriptions, add the "License" file when you update your mods and start scouting the SW for copies of your files every week.
-
Well, I honestly don't know much about "Real World" jobs, since I never had one, but for online work 25% is incredibly low. Granted, most of the files are modifications and some are things so simple that even 25% is too much, but this is just further evidence of the amount of planning that went into this launch (the cut should be changed by type, if it's original work, modified work or simple tweaks). Now, on to some numbers. I understand that this is something completely new(ish) and modders and users alike are still trying to figure out a lot of things, most importantly prices. I've been playing dota for well over a year now so I have a little experience with this "app store" and I bet some of you have as well. Most modders just have no idea what the price of a mod is, be it Falskaar or changing a value within CK. From dota's community store (the valve store does NOT count in this instance, as it approaches a "retail store" more than the app store the SW clearly is) every item is between 0.03€ (the min for people to get payed 0.01€) and 0.30€, anything above this is a rare (they can go over 200€) or a set. With that in mind, I've made some calculations for RBB, which, at best, is blatantly insignificant when compared to the "beasts" of modding. So, for the latest version I have about 21.8k unique dls, which at the min price valve has set of 0.26€ gives me a little over 1600€. This is clearly several times what I think RBB is worth. What I mean to show with all of this is how ridiculous a 5€ mod and the 0.26€ lower limit are. The most expensive mods, and by this I mean mods that have hundreds of hours put into them, feature original work, have amazing quality and provide complete support (which is VERY important and a point to stress, since you are now getting payed for something you must provide support for that product, whether you want it or not. Valve solved this for dota, and I suspect TF2 as well, by having a small QA team that quickly tests the items voted for by the community. Testing mods for all the above would be nearly impossible though) would be worth 1€ AT MOST and most likely not even that. Just to finish, when setting a price to something like a mod, you not only have to consider what the user is going to pay for a full load order (the full 255 plugins, plus retextures, remodels, rescripts, etc.) and what the modder is going to get. From what i read yesterday, Valve only allows bank-to-bank transfers, not sure if PayPal counts as a bank here... But still, don't forget that you have to pay taxes over that 25% and if you're not from the US you have to pay the taxes to move the money plus the taxes of your own country. This is normal in online payments but a lot of people may not be aware of it. The 100$ thing is pretty standard, not much to say there. One thing to end, and this is what scares me the most, is the copyright issues. Even for original work, up to what point do we own what we upload on nexus? If someone monetizes what we freely uploaded can we use a DMCA takedown? (that will take months if it even works). THIS is the biggest problem with monetization, THIS is what Valve should've invested in, not in setting a ridiculous and greedy lower limit. But hey, I guess greed can turn everyone and they will taste the ire of the internet for it :/

The only ones I know of there are DA and ME, are the rest any good?
-
Ok, my bad, the actual model is not so smooth and it has only 20k polys: Well, that's true aiyen but then again, everything can be used given a good normal map :p About the skulls, when I finished this I was still trying to make it fit into the vanilla textures so I did pretty much nothing with them (same as hands) :/ what could the skulls be changed into? It's only used once in his quest, but still, saving polys should be a good practice! I'll see what I can do (and Aiyen, don't expect miracles with the uv's :p)
-
Well, apparently I was supposed to be working on this... ? :p I never really did anything with sculpting outside of practice but I got this done on the malacath statue: (If you can't see which one is vanilla and which one is mine I have failed miserably) If you guys like it I can do something for the rest of the statues as well. There are a few issues with it, such as deciding if 38k polys is worth the improvement and getting a texture artist to make new textures for it since I can't fit the new UV's in the vanilla texture :/
-
I've looked through a few of his meshes and so far there a few that while with a higher poly count there are much more imperfections that with a simple subsurf level (it has its problems but I mostly use it as a higher res control) as seen here: Left is this mods', Right is my control. I eventually figured out that he pretty much just subdivided the meshes once or twice (the breasts were clearly subsurfed - the rose pattern at the tip) and then fixed some edges either manually or with a smooth modifier, which accounts for both the higher poly count and the imperfections at some of the statues. Nifskope image is this mods', Blender image is my test after subdividing. tldr: Bad meshes are bad. While not all have added imperfections (like stretching - no uv unwrapping after meshing is bad) and some even have some smoother surfaces (the clavicus vile statues has slightly smoother horns and scarf) they are simply not better than vanilla imo. Tbh, I guess that's the equivalent to upscaling textures, adding noise and calling it an HD retexture.

SKYRIMLE WAO - Weather and Ambience Overhaul Megapatch (by UnmeiX)

WAO with vividan, the dream has come true... (a while ago, I know, only saw it now ;_;) -
I used it some time ago and unless it has changed a lot it is definitely not worth using. While the effect is a bit amusing at the beginning, being interrupted for a few seconds gets annoying really quickly :x It was a great idea though...

Not compatible with ELFX :/ While the interiors seem nice that kinda kills it...

Jenna is now also working on mannimarco but she is known to handle several projects at once. I'd keep an eye on both and you can check for yourself which you prefer -
Nexus Link. A no brainer for anyone who uses PerMa by Enai Siaion. Should prove useful :p

I'd recommend SR:LE conflict resolution guide, if Neo hasn't removed it yet he has a link to sharlikran's video on conflict resolution. Should help :p -
So someone attempted to scam me on Steam...
Ganda replied to WilliamImm's topic in General Game Discussion
I'm saving that one :p but yes, sometimes you're aware that it's a scam but you still want to check it out... that has already happened to me eheh
