  1. Recommendations and specific instructions have been STEP specific, but with the newer concept of packs, we need a modified infrastructure for supporting them. Mod pages should be agnostic, a reference point for installation. Specific instructions centered around packs need to be pack specific, and that has all ways been the goal. That needs to be the paradigm that STEP follows as well.
  2. It is dreaming, i.e. a perfect world. :) But one I'd like to see. There would obviously be changes in how things are done. You are definitely headed down the right path, in that creation of a mod store (be it forum thread or Wiki Mod page) would be the single point of creation, and the follow-up would be automatically created. Whichever is designated to be automatically created would be left to that device and not allowed to be created manually. Categorization should be done by staff, and not by the general public. It's the only way to insure quality and consistency. As for the tag for an included mod, it's a suggestion, but by no means required. You correctly stated where I was going, where such functionality would update a Forum thread for a mod with a tag of say "STEP" if it is included in the current release, and remove it if it was removed. Some of this would require on-going jobs on both sides to keep things in sync. Automation should be on our list of things to think about and ultimately work on to help cut the fat of the mundane, while improving consistency and quality.
  3. I vote no for the sub-forum, and following is why (couple of tangents). In a perfect world, the Anthology forum is renamed and no longer serves as a repository of mod discussions that are/were in STEP, but rather serves as the discussion point for mods overall. An automatic link would be correlated between the forum thread and the Wiki Mod page, and a mechanism for creating a base shell. This could either occur by creating the appropriate thread in the Forum, which then creates a base Wiki page, or creating the appropriate Wiki Mod page, which then creates a base Forum thread (It would probably be easier to create thread in Forum which then creates Wiki Mod page). This would also reduce maintenance tasks. The Wiki should be the definitive source for mods included or not. By switching the Anthology forum to a centralized mod discussion hierarchy by category, it would not only continue to serve STEP directly, but Pack authors as well. With an automatic link between Forum and Wiki, a more appropriate single tag could be automatically applied to mod threads which are in the current version of STEP, replacing the current two tag system ("INCLUDED" and "DROPPED"). This also removes the need for the continued moving of threads back and forth based on recommendations and what is accepted or not. In general practice, the moving of threads should be an exception, not a rule. This would also make any need for a sub-forum obsolete. In regards to sub-forum's, they should be used as a means of categorization centered around continued discussion. The requests for single sub-forums with a justification of improving manageability is mostly a fallacy. It seems logical that it would improve maintenance, and it would today while the number of threads that get tucked away is small, but as the numbers increase, you're right back at the original problem you were attempting to solve. While doing this, it also adds unnecessary complexity to the forum structure which directly impacts users. KISS.
  4. Group structure will be revisited soon enough. I personally agree that there are too many, as some of them are more suited to permission level only rather than having a visible presence. Keep in mind that it's not a top priority though. We need to focus on preparing the migration. Details coming very soon.
  5. Good point, I spaced on that as a possibility.
  6. PNG images can be uploaded, and I just uploaded one without any issue. Perhaps the image you were trying to upload was corrupt.
  7. What image was it you were trying to update? I fixed permissions on directories so that isn't the problem, but it might be the image itself that has permissions problems. Based on the directory in the error, it looks like it was Riverwood_default.PNG.
  8. OK, try again.
  9. I was just able to upload an image. Get me a few.
  10. I don't @#$% around. :P
  11. There was a permissions issue I just fixed. You should be able to upload now.
  12. You can also ensure that google search results are limited only to the forums using the site keyword, such as: site:forum.step-project.com <your search here>
  13. is there some way to create searches that require all terms vs. one?Yes (sorry, I should have mentioned that in my last post). If you want search terms to be explicitly required, put a plus(+) in front of them. You can also put a minus(-) in front of search terms to filter out results. When doing a search on thread titles only, the following search returns only this thread: +titles +search +threadThat example is very confusing to me ... could you either use a specific example or clarify the generalization? The above is a specific example for this very thread. The point of the search above is that the words are out of order from how they appear in the thread title. Using double quotes in the case of the above will not be useful, because nothing matches explicitly, i.e. "titles search thread". The inclusion of the + says, "This search term MUST match in order for a result to be returned". The fact that all of them have a plus means that all terms must match (mutually inclusive). That is different from just using 'titles search thread' without the single quotes, which says, "Any of these search terms may match, and in any combination". Given the above search, the following matches: But the following doesn't because 'titles' and 'thread' don't exist, and the + says that they must exist in order to be a match.
  14. is there some way to create searches that require all terms vs. one?Yes (sorry, I should have mentioned that in my last post). 15. Renamed threads won't be a problem. The title is updated in the database, and there is no record of the previous name to be matched against. The exception is moved threads with a redirect. One thing to keep in mind when searching is that when you have multiple words in the search, results are returned that have at least one of the words in the title (search terms are OR'ed).
  16. We go back and forth all the time, but it's more like Zues vs Thor. :P
  17. My bad, wrong country, you get the point. Use of any online service requires an evaluation and acceptance of risk. It's not about storing sensitive information for me, it's about history, and it's all kinds of shady with Kim Dotcom. Throw in an unprecedented free 50GB of storage, and it's enough to make me more wary. The only reason I would need that kind of storage is for selective backups of my computer, and that isn't going to happen regardless of the vendor. I'm not a realist like you when it comes to the internet.
  18. For starters, encrypting information to claim plausible deniability doesn't work. The only thing going for them on that front is being located in the Netherlands...for now. Kim Dotcom knew what he was engaging in with Megaupload as a pirate haven. But I'm sorry, I don't blindly trust anything written on a website, and there is enough skepticism to make me wary.
  19. I'm avoiding Mega. It's a Megaupload waiting to happen all over again, and who gives away 50GB of free space? I'm very leery about trusting them.
  20. It's fine to through an archive in there, but I would unpack it and store the contents on a per-patch basis in github. It will enable you to check single files in/out to update them, and allow you to track changes per file. You can't do that with a single archive.
  21. Aside from the gaming consoles of the day, my first computer was a TRS80, followed by the C64/128, Amiga 500/3000T/4000. Didn't go PC till the late 90's. I even had my first foray into virtualization by running an intel emulator on my Amiga so that I could run PSpice at home. Already a slow program on the XT's at the college, but unbearable when running through an emulator. Got my first taste of UNIX via NetBSD in '92, and installed it on an older Amiga. Then stumbled across gcc (downloaded via USENET...uudecode anyone?) to do all of my C programming homework at home. I was livin' fat and happy. Started learning shell scripting, followed by Perl in '95 at my first Systems Administrator job, and gave C/C++ the bird.
  22. We have a different plugin installed to put messages on the front page, but just haven't used it. One thing I also want is to be able to have a popup alert display for very important messages so that it grabs the users attention (should be used rarely, but provide a one time popup that doesn't display again after being viewed once).
  23. Fixed.
