  1. I love me some Linux, and I tend to use Debian a lot. I first started learning UNIX from NetBSD back in the early 90's, and still use OpenBSD and FreeBSD to this day. I was a BSD fan boy, and still am to some extent, but I love UNIX systems and will give any a try. Professionally, I still have to work with Solaris and HP-UX. Though a big kudos to Sun for ZFS and propelling the movement towards the next gen of filesystems.
  2. I drew when I was a kid using reference images, and I got pretty good at it with mainly cartoons and stuff that didn't have a lot of shadows (or I forgo the shadows). I took some classes while in elementary and was introduced to depth and shadows then. The teachers husband was one of those amazing drawers and did a lot of work with pencil. Since the class was after school, he would sometimes come and sit at her desk and draw with a normal #2 pencil. I think I had one of those moments like tech after seeing his work...what am I doing? I'll never be that good! haha. But, I didn't continue to work on drawing and ended up becoming a techie instead.

  4. I was admiring artwork by a lot of folks while traveling Youtube (watching time lapse videos), and I become extremely fascinated with some very amazing pencil drawings. There are a lot of very talented artists out there, but thought I'd share a few. [video=youtube] [video=youtube] [video=youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLOKeHrPLis [video=youtube]
  5. If I ever come across a man eating plant the likes of which were in the movie Little Shop of Horrors, I'll remember to grab some extra strong espresso. :P
  6. I hear ya. Fortunately we have an awesome natural grocery here, and I can pick up a lb of most varieties for just over 3 bucks. sounds yummy! I have to avoid peanuts at the moment, but I love almond butter. I also avoid soy because it's heavily GMO produced.
  7. Guess what I'm making tomorrow! :P Ditto! Well, my missus will be making this for me if I ask nicely :) Also, I recommend you guys try quinoa - it'a a healty alternative to likes of rice and cuscus. Also, check out this article about using chia seeds to thicken your smoothies. quinoa is great, I use it in a lot of dishes. amaranth is also a good alternative to wheat based products, and I've tried pasta made from it with great success.
  8. What do gnomes smell like? :o_O:Fertilizer and Dog Piss. :DI always thought it was odd that I smelled fertilizer and dog piss when passing by houses littered with garden gnomes. Now I know.
  9. I love me some Almond milk! And raw almonds too. I'm not a vegetarian per say, but I've reduced the amount of meat that I eat and love my veggies (and raw nuts and eggs)...and avocados..making my mouth water. One of the things that I do is supplement additional protein a few times a week with a no sugar, 100% pure egg white protein powder. Cup of almond milk (can make yourself with raw almonds, water, and a good blender), 4 ice cubes, non-sweetened cocoa, scoop of protein powder, and a pinch of stevia. Makes an awesome Chocolate protein shake. I generally agree with Z in regards to multivitamins, but that is mainly because the market is flooded with bad products containing useless fillers and synthetic vitamins. There are good products out there though that are very beneficial. Main thing to look for is being derived from whole foods. A sign that a product contains synthetic vitamins (unless otherwise stated) is when they are listed with their technical name, like Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin E (dl-tocopheryl acetate), etc.
  10. Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you... (it's a good thing you can't hear me singing)
  11. This is a great post that gives an overview on what really causes slow downs. The general user will hardly, if ever, notice any difference, and as has already been stated, it's still going to be significantly faster than platters. Striving for keeping below a certain percentage on today's SSD's is mostly irrelevant.
  12. I concur. If you have a fan bearing making noise, that's not a good sign. It could even be hindering the fan so it isn't as effective at cooling as it should be.
  13. Can you clarify what you mean by "experiencing problems being able to test anything over 2gb on my current card after doing some recent testing?" Do you mean that the program has trouble testing a card that is over 2 gb vram?It never did do the tests when I went over 2GB. I allowed the program to switch to 640x480 display, but it returned to my native display immediately and the information window stated that the test failed.
  14. I came across this page where the folks at folding@home wrote a couple of GPU memory testers akin to memtest. MemtestG80 is for nvidia/CUDA only, and MemtestCL can be run on AMD and nvidia. Haven't tried it out personally, and you need a login to download the binaries from that site, but it is relatively newer than the Video Memory Ram Tester. Last time I ran VMRT I had a 2GB card, but I'm experiencing problems being able to test anything over 2GB on my current card after doing some recent testing.
  15. There is a readme that comes with it, so I recommend giving it a read. You want the Windows version (.exe) and you can specify (override) memory limit from the command line. Example: vmt.exe 2048 (uses 2048MB of video memory).
  16. Why would it only happen in Skyrim? Also, my graphics card is only like 3 months old. Is it because Skyrim is the most memory intensive? Is there any sort of other stress test that can test GPU memory before I blame it on my card? It's possible that the graphical resources being used with your copy of Skyrim are pushing enough VRAM usage to hit bad VRAM. You can try Video Memory Stress Test to see if any errors get reported. Stress testers are not guaranteed to use all of the VRAM during the tests (much like CPU stress test, they are designed to push the limits of the chip, which causes overheating, which gives you an indication of whether it can handle the "stress").
  17. I never thought about it in those terms, but statmonster stated it beautifully. I also play (well, when I did play) in 3rd person. It does have a more cinematic feel.
  18. It is. It's still dark, but it's a lighter shade of grey...nearly perfect for me.
  19. FT DeepDark has been updated, and it's awesome! Some new colors, highlights, and effects, and the HTML inspector colors are great too.
  20. Was watching a video from one of the storm chasers, and they came up on the tornado as it was plowing through a farm. It looked to be within a 100 feet of the main house, and it came out unscathed thank goodness (i.e. it was still standing, though likely took wind/debri damage). I have some family that lives in Kansas, and I even remember as a kid visiting my Grandma's sister on her farm. Had a few times we had to go into the shelter. I was pre-teens then, and thought that was the coolest (I love storms), but not realizing at the time what was actually going on out there.
  21. I watched some videos on the tornado as it tore through some houses. Very sad, and my thoughts go out to all who were affected. I remember being at an ex'es one weekend with a storm brewing. Then the tornado warnings came on the radio, and when I went outside to check on how things were progressing, I saw a tornado forming in the clouds just a few miles north of us. We started packing up all of the animals and perishables, and within a couple minutes it was directly above us. It touched down about 10 miles away, and thank goodness no one was injured/killed. I had a new found respect for mother nature that day. It's one thing to watch videos of tornadoes or other natural disasters, but to see things taking shape before your very eyes when you know what it can do (and could have touched down at any moment) is scary.
  22. Altered pages incorporating SMW functionality need to be refreshed, and that can only be done by sysops. I'll take care of itFYI, the above statement is only true for pages that are protected, or for when you want to force an update of all wiki pages. Any user can request a "purge" of a single page that is not protected (i.e. Mod pages) by selecting the menu option "PAGE TOOLS->REFRESH". Purging a page forces the HTML cache to be rebuilt, which will re-evaluate any SMW properties/queries as well.
  23. The hashes are acting as delimiters as opposed to using the default forward slash (/). So, you can do things like.. s#search#replace# s@search@replace@ s;search;replace; It's just habit that I tend to default to using #'s since I usually have to deal with forward slashes. If you use the default forward slash as a delimiter, then you have to escape them within the search and replace portions. s/\/some\/path/\/new\/dir/ s#/some/path#/new/dir#The second is easier to read.
  24. You don't have to use the API with curl, you can reference translate.google.com directly. I attempted to do this and came up with the following very minimal solution. DEFAULT_SL='en'; ### Default source language: English DEFAULT_TL='es'; ### Default target language: Spanish source_lang=$DEFAULT_SL; target_lang=$DEFAULT_TL; while getopts "s:t:" ARGV; do    case $ARGV in        s) source_lang=$OPTARG;;        t) target_lang=$OPTARG;;        *) echo "Unrecognized option."; exit 127;;    esac done shift $(( $OPTIND - 1 )) ### Remove the parsed switches html=$( curl -s -i --user-agent "Mozilla/4.0" -d "sl=${source_lang}" -d "tl=${target_lang}" --data-urlencode "text=${1}" http://translate.google.com ) translation=$( echo $html | sed -ne 's#^.*<span id=result_box[^>]*><span[^>]*>\(.*\)</span></span>.*$#\1#p' ) echo "=> ${translation}"Called as: translate [-s ] [-t ] "Text to translate" The source and target language need to be the short form (i.e. en => English, es => Spanish, de => German, etc.). So to translate German to English.. translate -s de -t en "Guten Morgen" It uses curl to send data as a POST request to translate.google.com using the -d switches, so it's as if you were accessing it via your browser. The user agent must also be set or else Google will deny the translation. The html output is then parsed via sed to grab only the translated text.
  25. It's not a standard UNIX tool, but if you have 'curl' available, you can use it to send a request to a webserver. Just need to know the options that get passed to the API, and you can send the source and target language, and text to translate. Then you just need to parse the return output (take a look at awk). There are a few shell scripts out there that use google translate that you can use as a basis (some don't work anymore, but they can lead you in the right direction).
