Do what I did and make the folder you use to download all your SMC mods into into a zip and keep it safe on your storage drive. Also if you're struggling to find a few of them, (and you will since they're not all on Nexus) let us know. I have a good majority of them except anything by ewi65 and Frozunswaidon.

I got rid of all of those by putting the esp through TES5 Edit and cleaning it.

There's things you can change to lower performance hit. Not using a Depth of Field effect is one. But it may well help to know the specs of your rig. You may just not have the graphical oomph to run an ENB and still get your desired performance.

It's no huge issue if they end up in overwrite. Just means you have to do one extra step and move them from the overwrite directory to the mods directory.

My old GTX780Ti? Will be uograding mobo, processor, memory and graphics card shortly. Doubt anyone will want the mobo/processor/memory, but the 780Ti is still a solid card, even at it's age. Runs a heavily modded Skyrim with no issues (aside from very occasional stutters) and handles things like The Division and Overwatch with ease. Wouldn't ask for much for it. If anyone does want it, you'd pay freight from Australia plus whatever you feel is fair for the card. Also wont be bummed if no-one wants it, just thought I'd find out first.

Vividian is nice. I also like/have used Bleak ENB, Unbleak ENB, Grim and Somber Jyggalag ENB and Skylight ENB. Happily recommend them all.

Manually download the CORE pack. It's a zip that contains other zips of all the patches that will be needed along the way. If you intend to use some of the optionals you may eventually need the OPTIONAL pack as well.

Option 1 is what I've always done. I always leave the merged mods active and just move the esps to optional. Never had an issue.

Ah yes, now I see what you mean. Typically it makes more sense to Merge things down so you're under the 255 plug in limit and then sort the load order. And taking a closer look at the load order file shows that it contains the merged esp files in it. So it's expecting the merges to have been done. Paul you might want to take a look at swapping those two steps around. (ie set load order after the merge instructions)

The Load Order step is supposed to be done after you've done all the merges. Once you have done all the merges the merged esp files can be moved to optional files. That will lessen your ESP count by quite some amount. As for scripting to make things easier, there is the 'stepperupper' thing that airbreather is working on to make the setup parts easier. Ultimately a full script that will do just about everything for you is likely to be an issue due to permissions etc.
