I find Gopher's Mod "testing" to be irritating. (There, I said it.)
Kuldebar replied to Kuldebar's topic in Step Banter Inn
RTFM is the running joke it seems, so even if you had stressed the point, it might still have been missed. But good points, encapsulates my own opinion yet sounds nicer! The College mod tangent was largely based on his own statement that an overhaul of the Mage College was "needed". Yes, I understand that it would have thrown a wrench into the "planned" mod tests, but that was even more of reason for him not to rush to judgment on ICoW in such a flippant/dismissive manner when he could simply said, "can't test it this week". It's like the worst time for ETAC to be reviewed right now, just bad timing. I'm still on the 9.1 version (Complete & Patches) to avoid the issues that cropped up in the 9.2 (which I test drove) -specifically in Dawnstar and the CTD. -

Fair words, I'm less irritable now. ;) I enjoy his Skyrim Videos (Let's Play is awesome and his tutorials are pure gold) just not his mod "testing" ones, he simply isn't thorough enough and it can result in unfair evaluations or outright misinformation about some one's hard work. -
His dismissal of Immersive College of Winterhold by Grantyboy050 as a glorified "player home mod" and his total fubarred look at ETAC, just pisses me off considering how much awesomeness is represented by those two mods. He defends his habit of not reading mod descriptions and instructions (says it would make a boring video, but one would think he could do any necessary reading prep off camera). For ETAC he didn't even use any of the patches and seemed to have overlooked the texture options made available to him. He also installed South Dragon Bridge even though he runs a well documented conflicting mod in his build. He then had to do a "do-over" install, presumably reading the option descriptions in the installer. For Immersive College of Winterhold by Grantyboy050, Gopher didn't even load the mod up. Curiously, in the last few weeks he has reviewed two college related mods: one that adds doors to the bedrooms, and the other which adds a kitchen...all features which come standard in the Immersive College of Winterhold mod (among a multitude of other amazing additions and changes). My issue is that, to paraphrase Benjamin "Ben" Parker, "with great youtube popularity comes great responsibility". He is doing a great disservice to these mod authors by doing these half-ass "testing" videos. Oh well. /rant off

Why Elder Scrolls Online fails to Deliver (for me)
Kuldebar replied to Uhuru's topic in General Game Discussion
Yes, like I said, it hasn't even gained my interest and that's the whole point. I've logged years, actual years of play-time in a plethora of MMO's starting back when I returned to the states with DAoC, even have an NPC named after me in that game. I've played good MMO's and plenty of bad ones, I'm starting to get a feel for these kind of things after so much money and time has been spent. Shelling out 50 bucks to play a game to see if I like it...no thanks. Usually if I am interested in a game, I'll be in the beta as I have for a fair number of MMO's over the years. The point is, ESO fails because it didn't even garner my interest. There was way too much of the usual dumbing/watering down early on in development that made me realize there was absolutely nothing unique or particularly Elderscroll-esque about it other than the franchise marketing angle. The vibe I got from the ESO development news was compromise in order to appeal to the masses and not the core Elders Scroll gamer. I'd play GW2 or Darkfall Online again over the ESO MMO; I haven't played DFO since they re-released it, compared to ESO, GW2 has so many fairly revolutionary takes (questing, gathering, grouping, class roles) on the standard MMO offerings. ESO released with game systems that were revolutionary...6 years ago. They done effed it up. -
I'm not sure how to answer about dungeons, I do need the occasional candlelight spell or torch for the less lit corners with no light sources.

Why Elder Scrolls Online fails to Deliver (for me)
Kuldebar replied to Uhuru's topic in General Game Discussion
Yeah, the purchase system used by the game for player race, player mount etc. Additionally the game economy is undoubtedly geared toward further expansion. The F2P-type models aren't anything new, but there's a right way and wrong way to go about it, ESO appears to be going more the wrong way. I will back pedal on this, as I don't know first hand how off-putting the ESO model is...because I haven't played. But, as I said in my last post, I have little measurable interest in ESO, which is remarkable considering in gaming history and preferences. Great examples of F2P hybrid games are DDO, Rift, Guild War, Guild Wars 2, TERA, LOTRO...all those games to one degree or another will try to sell you things, but they strike a balance that isn't as jarring right out of the box. -
CTD and Performance patch ENBoost (by Boris Vorontsov)
Kuldebar replied to EssArrBee's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
The impact that this setting will have with your system will be negligible as compared to the benefits it gives for those (like me) with far less VRAM. It isn't going to be wasted if you set it at 512 or anything. The good news is that you can change this setting without ever exiting the game. I'd probably leave it around 256 and no higher than 512. It's just not as crucial for your system because the ENB already has a lot of elbow room to work its magic, so nothing to fret over. -

Kuldebar replied to EssArrBee's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
Boris has made some newer comments regarding ReservedMemorySizeMb, also in the recent binaries the ability to change this setting from inside the game via the ENB control panel is another indication that hints at the need to tailor it for your system. I look at ReservedMemorySizeMb like one would a graphics data bucket brigade topping off a water tank that is supplying water for various users. The larger the water tank, the less need you will have to constantly fill it. The smaller the tank, the more likely you will need constant supply buckets to keep the tank reasonably filled. -

Yes, if you are swimming in VRAM, a smaller amount is generally what people recommend. Here's how I would explain it: This is mainly because unlike with lesser VRAM systems, your system has to juggle less stuff around via the GPU/PCIE pipes. My system needs a good "static" reserve amount to facilitate the constant "juggling" where as a system with large amounts of VRAM will be maintaining a lot more in active memory thus not needing to page it out as often. It probably wouldn't hurt for you to set it large, but best advice leans toward you using a smaller amount for reserved memory. -
Using console commands to advance through quests
Kuldebar replied to phryxolydian's question in General Skyrim LE Support
For me, if I ever had to use the console to advance a quest (or quests), I would have absolute confirmation that my choices in my mod build was flawed or not patched correctly. CWO...not surprised, but reading the author's mod page...one might find it less than helpful or appealing: That's why I said, "No thanks." Now to your question...you need to use the console command to advance/complete the quest...moving the NPC around is probably not going to trigger the progress step for the quest. https://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Console -
This. That's one reason why everyone often has a different experience with scripted mods, it's not that they are broken or even poorly designed...it all comes down to the old Papyrus and how it handles what gets thrown at it. The straw breaking the camel's back is a very relevant mental image to illustrate the situation. It is for these reasons I don't use (many) mods that fire scripts off constantly or in such broad ranged applications...like CWO and Footprints. EBT with its scripting is happening during some already very busy script heavy combat; it seems like a risky endeavor. I just tend to be conservative with script usage, I think it pays off in long-term stability and trouble-shooting script interaction issues is nigh impossible for those who don't understand the scripts in question...from various mods.

There are sometimes where you will get 4 lines or so of warnings but by moving one item the rest become inapplicable. So far, I haven't really had an issue with them and always can comply with the warning so it goes away and all is well. I know when I first started using MO the warning text confused the hell out of me...I didn't realize it was referring to the left-side pane of MO. I recall getting rather frustrated until I realized my misunderstanding.

I never really concerned myself with my horse's stamina...but I don't use the iNeeds Horse module either. Makes sense if you play for ultra realism that stuff needs to be tracked.

Issues installing Deadly Dragons in Mod Organizer
Kuldebar replied to humanman's question in General Skyrim LE Support
I just download and installed Deadly Dragons via Mod Organizer. It was a little slow to run the script installer but it did just fine. If you are having issues, make sure you let it do its thing. The box MO pops up stays there for a bit while the script installer prepares to run. -
Absolutely. All I know is that I have been following the warning's guidance since I start using MO without any noticeable ill-effects. The warning is consistent and dependent on the respective esp ordering on the right side pane. A lot of time was obviously put into the system, one would think there's some substance to it in regards to scripted mod loading.
-
That's lovely.
-
If you follow the guidance the warning gives and move the mods in the left-side pane of MO, the warning will go away. The warning is telling you that your script/data folders need to be in a certain order to avoid potential script interaction nastiness.

It's amazing the stuff that goes unnoticed when you just play the game, lol! You are far too kind, I just obsessively keep my ear to the ground for "inside" information and try various stuff out. I can experiment with Skyrim a lot more readily now that I have the tools on hand to do so (TES5Edit, Mod Organizer, STEP Forum discussions for example) but above all, I listen to what other people are saying, it helps me focus on what things to take heed of in a trust, but verify sort of approach.

Why Elder Scrolls Online fails to Deliver (for me)
Kuldebar replied to Uhuru's topic in General Game Discussion
Appeal to gameh authority: As an avid (subbed for 6 months or more to 20-25 MMO's over the last decade) MMO gamer and a dedicated fan of the Elder Scrolls escapist franchise since the Daggerfall era...there's nothing to entice or interest me in this MMO-fication of the Elder Scrolls saga. Now for opining, my opinion: MMO's are in a sad state. Until the vertical progression and outstanding shallow gameplay elements are addressed the typical MMO model has lost its luster to those who have been overexposed to it. Guild Wars 2 (did some really awesome things that ESO should have taken as a clue) was my last foray...but unfortunately it picked up the vertical progression playbook with some gusto early after release but worse, it remains a rather pale shadow of deeper RPG gameplay. It's really a tough row to hoe for an MMO, no doubt. Just some stuff I noticed from the video review: The game animations looks clunky, compare to a game like Aion or TERA...very rough looking character movements in ESO.Some of the gameplay mechanics (grouping, BOSS spawn, quest item spawn), rightfully vilified in the review, are whack...seriously, WTF?!The Cash Shop model...sucks. I usually have played subscription games but my last games were quality games that were largely/mostly/almost free to play. (Guild Wars 2, TERA) ESO is making the demarcation point between free players and paying players...too severe. It's going to die on the vine unless it changes that, if an MMO lacks players, it will die. Players are the content. The art direction fails to deliver the gritty world we expected. Character models? What a joke! (Hey,I don't like ugly elves either, but FFS, talk about devs caving in for marketing reasons!) -
I've only had to use its "script instance removal" tool once when I removed a scripted mod and that wasn't in my current game. It works as advertised. To be honest, if you use sound modding practices, ie. never uninstall a mod (especially that has scripts) in an active game then you won't ever need such a utility. But, I do peek into save files on occasion using this tool just to check what scripts are active, etc. Many of the better script-centricmods (for example, anything by Isoku for instance) uninstall very cleanly if you follow the instruction which usually involve using the MCM controls. Convenient Horses has specific uninstall steps involving console command that if not followed can cause issues. But again, I never uninstall a mod in a game I wish to run for the long haul, this means I am highly selective and very snobbish when it comes to mods I will use. My character is just almost ready to hit level 50, and while I have added some mods during the play-through, I have uninstalled none.
-
Why do people use the borderless window, or for that matter, run Skyrim in non-full screen mode? The reason I ask, not trying to be snarky: Old school gamer rules state that running any 3-d application in anything but fullscreen is far more taxing on a system and highly inefficient.

CTD and Performance patch ENBoost (by Boris Vorontsov)
Kuldebar replied to EssArrBee's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
To re-emphasize: the ENBlocal.ini needs to be tailored to the specific computer, but there are some general guidelines that will help you: [MEMORY] ExpandSystemMemoryX64=true <----nearly everyone should have this set for true ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true <----nearly everyone should have this set for true DisableDriverMemoryManager=false <----unless you have outdated/buggy video drivers, leave this false DisablePreloadToVRAM=false <----nearly everyone should have this set for false, improves loading screen times EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false <----nearly everyone should have this set for false ReservedMemorySizeMb=XXX <------ I keep this at a relatively large setting 50% ~ 80% of my system's actual VRAM amount, the reserved static VRAM helps hand off the VRAM load more efficiently VideoMemorySizeMb=0 <------- this setting doesn't matter if AutodetectVideoMemorySize is set to true EnableCompression=false <------- this setting will depend on how your system handles the graphics load, for mine I set to false AutodetectVideoMemorySize=true <------ definitely recommend setting this to true The colored settings are ones you will need to determine for your computer, the other setting should be as universally fine as one can realistically expect. There are exceptions to nearly everything in life, but I like learning the generalities first and pickup on the exceptions later. For reference, my computer, my system stats in signature: [MEMORY] ExpandSystemMemoryX64=true ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true DisableDriverMemoryManager=false DisablePreloadToVRAM=false EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false ReservedMemorySizeMb=896 VideoMemorySizeMb=0 EnableCompression=false AutodetectVideoMemorySize=true -
It's a "poor man's" replacement, just a texture, but it looks good in game with the regular vanilla system (with some decal tweaks) and thus very low cost in performance; of course with no compatibility issues. The decal tweaks help (even without the replacement textures) look a lot by improving the amount, distribution and duration of combat gore to a reasonable level.

No footprints/wet & cold for me. I do have script mods, of course...I just try to ration their usage in my mod build. I use SPERG, Convenient Horses and EFF, they use a lot of scripts. I only get two kinds of CTD's these days, and they both are rare: -The "most likely" Papyrus related CTD (example: used "gather wood" from Camping Lite had a non-repeatable CTD) -The reload on death type CTD (this happens more predictably and can be avoided by simply restarting the client so the game memory clears out) [Decals] bDecalsOnSkinnedGeometry=1 iMaxDecalsPerFrame=256 uMaxDecals=1000 bDecals=1 bSkinnedDecals=1 uMaxSkinDecals=100 uMaxSkinDecalsPerActor=60 It's been a while, but I think I pulled those from the STEP Wiki Ini section.
