zigmen Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hello Everyone, Im new to the forum and S.T.E.P. and im wondering if there are any components to the STEP install I should avoid. My computer specs are as follows. Asus M5A97 AMD 1055T 2.8Ghz XFX 6870 1GB Accelero Cooler 8GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 1600 Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (System Drive) WD Green 1TB (Media Storage) What I'm wondering is what selections I should be making in the S.T.E.P install process. I think I should be aiming for mainly the redux mod options but I would like some other people to weigh in on it. I intend to run the game at 1080p settings with my television. I know the creator of S.T.E.P. runs things at a much lower resolution with a comparable system so I'd like to know if I should avoid anything in the S.T.E.P. guide. I look forward to any advice the community can offer. Cheers, Zigmen
z929669 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Actually, I run at 1920x1200, and I run STEP quite well with 1k texture overhauls (VRAM is your main limiter I think... but I do not know AMD processors very well) I think that many of the (FPS)-(FPS!) indicators in the STEP guide should be changed to (VRAM)-(VRAM!) indicators to distinguish more between GPU memory bottlenecks and CPU bottlenecks. 2k texture overhauls are (VRAM!), and 1k are (VRAM).

Definitely!!! FPS won't drop below 40 for me at all but game stuttering is pretty awful...
MontyMM Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 +1 My PC doesn't seem to care very much if it's running high or low res textures, until it runs out of VRAM...
Nachtfrost Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I'm also very interested about the VRAM bottleneck. I know that some texture overhauls give a brief recommendation for VRAM requirement (like at least 1,2 gb VRAM for full 2k). For me though, I don't really know how much additional texture overhauls add up to the VRAM requirements. I just figured out that 2 overhauls (e.g. one for general landscape and one for flora) requiring 1,2 gb VRAM each won't likely need 2,4 gb VRAM in total, right? So it's not that simple a solution.
stoppingby4now Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Landscapes will be one of the biggest cause of eating up VRAM with the higher resolution versions, including anything that provides variations of textures for objects where there may be a lot in a scene. Part of the problem with some mods is that they don't take into account what the effects of adding multiple mods with textures will do. There are also ini variables that will effect this as well, including uGridstoLoad, view distance modifiers, etc.
z929669 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I present numbers for the VRAM use of some popular texture overhauls in the DDSopt Guide and on this post (which is currently being transferred to the guide)
