Dragon in DLC2MQ05 won't attack or aggro -- Now also affects Alduin in MQ206

Question

Posted
I'm having a weird problem with one of the scripted dragons on Solstheim. After coming out of Nchardak, the dragon that Miraak sends won't attack or start talking. He just lands on the dwemer ruin and stares at me.

If I attack him, he takes off, flies in a circle, then lands again and resumes staring. I'm worried this might indicate some serious issues in the save game.

I'm positive this has to be some sort of a mod conflict, but for the life of me I can't identify what. I've looked in TES5Edit at the quest (DLC2MQ05) and the dragon (04017F87) and I cannot see anything over-writing any quest stages or behaviours (there's some mods affecting stats, but I'd be stunned if that was the cause).

Ok, I finally figured it out (whew!). The cause is the encounter zone mods I had installed (Arena and MEZF - Missing Encounter Zones FIXED). Once I disabled those two, Alduin starts fighting properly.

What stage of the quest are you in? That would be the first place to look and see if the quest has progressed properly. It's possible that something in the quest hung up or that you missed completing a part of it. Else, you can stop and restart the quest and then advance it to where you should be; all using console commands. That would be a last resort and save before doing so.

I've tried doubling back and redoing both Nchardak and the Apocrypha instance, and each time I get a different stage (sometimes stage 360, sometimes 370, sometimes 390). UESP says all of those are empty stages. The next non-empty stage is 500 after talking to Storn.

To me it seems more like something is blocking the dragon from proceeding with its script. No idea what though.

Ok, here's a weird one. If I console in a new dragon, it's not hostile to me. It's hostile to everyone else, but not to me. Even if I shout at them or hit them with arrows.

They used to be hostile to me: the one at Saering's Watch and a random dragon prior to Nchardak attacked me normally. But since coming back from Apocrypha it seems dragons don't consider me an enemy.

Possibly something has set my faction relation to dragons?

Very very weird.

There are certain dragons you can ride. I've never finished Dragonborn so I've never made it to that point in the game.  ^_^

EDIT:
I looked up the quest. Seems you're suppose to kill him. If he's not aggressive towards you, it could be a mod that is changing his behavior towards the player. It's also possible that a mod has added or changed factions around to create the issue of him not being aggressive as factions would be another place to look. In any case, you could just take him out and move on as that is how the quest is suppose to progress.

Thanks -- I ended up just killing that dragon. Unimmersive and cheesy to just shoot 75 arrows into a dragon that's just sitting there, but it did work.

However, now I'm having the exact same issue with Alduin after returning from the time wound having learnt Dragonrend. Alduin will not aggro, and when I hit him with Dragonrend he just keeps flying around. I can confirm I am hitting him because he gets the blue glow effect, but it's not forcing him to land. Also, regardless of what I hit him with (Dragonrend or arrows) his health bar never shows up.

So far, I have tried the following without success:

  • Reload from an earlier save
  • Remove mods that affect dragons
  • Clean the save file using Fallrim tools
  • Fast travel between High Hrothgar and TotW
  • Use console on Alduin to resetai, disable, enable, force hostile
  • Sort load order using LOOT

My guess is something is interfering with the script to transition Alduin out of dialog mode into fight mode. I have no idea what, though, or how to identify it. I can't see anything in XEdit that would be causing this (although that's probably more because of limitations in my modding knowledge than anything else -- I don't know how to recognize what I need to fix).

Once again, any and all help appreciated.

I still have not had any success in solving this issue.

  • I went through all of the Packages, NPC records, and Quest Aliases in Xedit. This didn't turn up anything, as pretty much all of them were unchanged from vanilla.
  • While doing the above, I found that The Paarthurnax Dilemma and Bugfix Compilation made some edits to (surprise surprise) Paarthurnax and Alduin, so I tried removing them.

At this point I am completely mystified and can't think of anything else to try. What's especially baffling is Google doesn't come up with anyone else having had this problem. Somehow I'm the only person in the world who is getting this.

Did you ever solve this? I am experiencing the same with the dragon outside of Falkreath. He just takes off and lands over and over when I attack him, no aggro.

In my case, I eventually solved it after removing "Arena" and "Missing Encounter Zones". No idea why either of those two would have had this effect, but a new game with those eliminated solved it.

Hope that helps.
