It's not Fallout 4, it's not TES VI either. It's...
MontyMM replied to rootsrat's topic in General Game Discussion
IIRC, then there's two separate Beth related things going on. One was the hyped-up teaser build up for The Evil Within. The other is just an announcement that Skyrim development has ceased so they can focus on their next big project, which they haven't even hinted at, and could still be anything. We might not hear any more about that for a long time. -
I'm new to this. Are my specs good enough to run these mods?
MontyMM replied to AnomalousBull's question in General Skyrim LE Support
I deleted the duplicate thread for you. ;) I don't know that mobile GPU (I'm sure someone here will), but the rest of your specs look good to go. -
What I suggest is that you post one question per topic, with a clearly descriptive title. If you have supplementary data that may be significant, such as your system config, then add that as an addendum to the query. There is nothing necessarily wrong with your approach, but when you post a long description of your situation, with a generic title, and multiple questions arising, then fewer people will take the time to read through it all and respond. I'm just suggesting a more efficient way of getting the information you need.

Hey guys, Could we keep this thread for discussing what we learn about the 3gb issue itself, and spin off the optimisation questions to other threads? It's not exactly off topic, but if we discuss all the possible ways to stay below 3gb in this thread, we'll have a bit of a muddled mega-thread.

SKYRIMLE [ LIGHTING FIX ] Relighting Skyrim - Dawnguard Edition by --JawZ--
MontyMM replied to z929669's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
Best of luck to you. STEP team certainly respects the need to put RL first, and you've contributed some good work. Take it easy, and maybe in time a bit of modding will become fun again, instead of a pressure. -
Sounds like a good candidate to me - and improvement to an illogical flaw in the vanilla game.

A Comparison of Water Mods
MontyMM replied to TechAngel85's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
I viewed in HD - a bit silly to view texture comparisons any other way! My point is that most of the differences are relatively subtle, and I don't have a strong preference on them, but that case is quite major. Is there a reason that you didn't include the texture comparison with WATER as the water mod? -
A Comparison of Water Mods

I'm not quite clear on what's being compared - is this using PW instead of Water in all cases, and then changing out just the textures and optionals? For me, the only really striking difference is at 1:17, where I think the right hand PW Textures shot looks far worse, turning the near shore ghostly pale, with a very sharp line. -
Bethesda stops Skyrim Development
MontyMM replied to torminater's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
This doesn't trouble me at all. From my point of view, we've been trying to refine Skyrim into better game, and now we're not tryingto hit a moving target. In one way, I feel like now we can really get started! -

Wow - good work. Possibly deserves the award for Most Striking Single Improvement. -
I think that it would be be quite a large task to significantly improve the effeciency of the engine through occlusion and such like. I'm curious about the potential of fixing some buggy code. It is very odd that 3gb seems to be a sort of fuzzy limit, and there is no reason I know of that this should result in a crash. It is possible, though probably unlikely, that this could be traced to some fairly straightforward bug. But I fear it may be something buried deep in the many millions of lines of code that make up the ageing and much extended engine, which I suspect is largely held together with duct tape.

A Comparison of Water Mods
MontyMM replied to TechAngel85's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
I prefer WATER in almost all cases, though I like the wave motion of the ocean in PW. I prefer the foam and waterfalls in WATER, and find that it looks better more often in game. PW has improved a great deal, but I still think it errs on the side of too much transparency in places - not in the sense that the water is too pure, but that from certain perspectives it allows clearer vision than reflection and refraction would permit. -
I'll stick with ISW. The much finer weave in Webs looks nice in some shots, but smears into almost flat textures in others.

Well, I'm not claiming to be the expert, and I think most of us non-Bethesda employees are all somewhat in the dark about these settings, but from what I've learned about the creation kit, it seems that this setting in particular has many misconceptions. Here is the official definition, and it seems that the RCRN team may also have misunderstood this one.

I'm not sure it is necessary to devise a way of inducing a memory related crash by extreme means in the vanilla game. The problem is that it introduces so may other factors - greatly increased geometry, physics, AI, and so on. This could work against the process of isolating memory as the cause. I would suggest to Beth that they simply test with a high texture load, as we have, to recreate the error. I'm sure they have access to plenty of assets to engineer such a situation, without resorting to 3rd party mods, which may also contaminate the experiment.

I think the bug report is well worth doing. Of course, it's perhaps unlikely that they'll see the needs of extreme modders as a priority, but it's the modding community that helps provide an enduring life and benefit to the TES franchise, and they would do well to acknowledge that. I strongly suspect that this is a fixable problem, and if we're very lucky it could even be a fairly trivial bug of which they are unaware, because only the relatively small hardcore of people will have encountered and identified this ceiling.

Lets talk about Doctor Who while I wait for my thermal paste
MontyMM replied to Sairven's topic in Step Banter Inn
With thermal paste, people tend to use way too much. It's only designed to fill the tiniest imperfections in the surfaces. Anything more than the thinnest layer, and it starts to become an insulator! -

I love mountains. And I like the idea of someone sitting in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, watching our weird british sci fi programs! Also, though I have probably not given the new Dr Who a fair viewing, that is largely because the first episode you mentioned sucked on a scale previously unimagined by mankind. -
I think that is the general feeling about its inclusion in STEP. I'm a fan, and detected not a single issue, but we would need a wide survey of quite structured testing before including it. It has the potential to be a hellish source of complications, though it appears to me to be a very solid piece of work.Â

That would displease me mightily. Is there not a little PC repair shop nearby that could fix you up for a couple of bucks? -

I'm a bit of killjoy when it comes to the rebooted Dr Who. I used to love it when I was a kid, but it was more . A bit dated and melodramatic to be sure, but really quite engaging! I find the new version a bit "zany" and eager to please. *grumbles* *mutters* :P
