Is there a way to not clutter the /Skyrim folder with ENB presets?
Lauren replied to Halde's question in Post-Processing Support
I've never had any issues with the ENB Manager and Changer https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/24402 as described in Neo's guide. By using this you can switch easily between ENB configs (or no ENB at all). I have an ENB Manager folder in my main Skyrim folder. Inside of that are a few other folders: ENB Versions > [ENB Version #] e.g. 0.254 > this folder is where the 2 main ENB files, ENBhost.exe and d3d9.dll, goENB Configs > [ENB preset of your choice] e.g. RealVision > this folder is where all of the other ENB preset files go (like enblocal.ini, enbseries.ini, etc.) You can install the ENB main files and the ENB preset files through the ENB Manager GUI, but tbh I find it just as easy to do it via Explorer in Windows. Either way it's up to you. If you're doing it via ENB Manager, click New, name your preset, then click Add (under Files, for the preset files), then Add under ENB Version (for the main files). Once you have these set up, you select your ENB version and preset, and click Activate. This will place all of the correct ENB files into your main folder. To get rid of ENB completely, open ENB Manager and select 'Disable ENB' then click Activate. Any time you change anything - edit your enblocal, drop in a new palette file, whatever - remember to open ENB Manager and click Activate. -
Preserve "Install Order" vs "Mod Order"?
Lauren replied to Geheiligt's question in Mod Organizer Support
I follow (mostly) SRLE myself and I also get the same warnings. People have brought it up before I believe in the main SR thread*, and Neo said to ignore it as everything has been tested as working fine. I've re-ordered them before, and currently they're not re-ordered as I'm redoing my setup, but I haven't actually really played the game so no effect to report either way. Also, SRLE still uses BOSS. The PMOP is solved by moving the mods in the left pane around, it's not really the plugin (esp) load list? There are no special instructions for the BOSS ordering of most of those mods, as they've been around awhile and are on the BOSS masterlist. *found it: OP - https://forum.step-project.com/topic/1209-skyrim-revisited-pre-release-feedback/page-241?do=findComment&comment=87368 TL;DR from Neo: -
I think the Gameplay Overhaul pack would be up your alley, philosophically. The forum thread is here https://forum.step-project.com/topic/4762-new-gameplay-overhaul-pack/

ACTUALLY...you might be in luck. I just Googled it (btw I didn't see a LAA tool on JB3textures page? not sure if we're looking at the same one) and someone literally just posted on an old thread discussing this LAA issue with a solution (hopefully). https://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1794735 Scroll to the bottom. I can't vouch for it of course, but definitely worth a shot! For the guide, eh, "up to date" is kind of relative with DA. It's just not as active of a modding community. I'd be happy to share my mod list if you're interested. -

Lauren replied to Lauren's question in Guide Support & Bug Reports (retired)
Sounds like shenanigans to me but I'll try it tomorrow! Well, I don't actually go up to and through/above Solitude, I go over the docks then cross the river. I'm not sure if it's still loading Solitude assets in that case? I can try though. If I go elsewhere it's fine. On one test I was doing well even with passing by that area, but when I looped back around (coming in from the east), it froze (not CTD though). FFFFFFFFFFFolgunthur. -

Haha sorry I didn't even see your post. I only re-dl'ed the USKP, I kinda feel like it won't help if I do the others... I can for ***** and giggles, though I think I'm at (or past) my troubleshooting threshold. [The below is not an exact chronological, detailed list of my testing, just FYI] I've switched between SKSE 1.06.06 and 1.07 (with and without the memory hax for each), verified the game cache a couple times, uninstalled my AV, disabled the Steam overlay, disabled Nvidia crap, disabled all non-system/Windows services, got fresh vanilla BSAs and re-cleaned them, deleted RendererInfo, used vanilla .inis, etc. etc. I keep thinking I've fixed it, but it just seems to keep doing it. I thought I'd fixed it by disabling the cleaned .esms I was using (though I tried that before). I started 3 new games and they were ok. I started setting up all my other mods again (not enabling, just setting up in MO), tested it once more with the 'working' setup, and I crashed in that spot. I switched between SKSE versions and eventually accidentally left the 1.06 scripts with the 1.07 dll/exe... which worked fine. I put the 1.07 scripts folder back, and I crashed. I put the 1.06 scripts in, no crash. I did that a few times (flip-flopping the folders), and again I thought 'well hm maybe this is a culprit? very weird but ok?' Again I continued putting my mods back in order... tested it once more with *that* 'working' setup before enabling anything (besides UPs/SKSE/ENB), and yep, crash. I even ran without the scripts folder and it was ok, but that doesn't really help haha. I also tried running straight through SKSEloader. That loading method (+cleaned .esms/UPs/SKSE/ENB, just directly in the Skyrim folder) had 3-4 crash-free new games (these were interleaved with testing new games loading via MO). However, once I added a small amount of mods, it started crashing again. Regardless, it's not a feasible solution anyway, I can't go back to dropping stuff in my data directory like it's the Stone Age! So I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out something whose cause can probably be summed up as because Skyrim* At this point I'm just going to set up my mods, follow guide instructions, use best practices, and play the game (who does that). If I have problems later, meh, so be it. I don't want to use the game without MO, or SKSE, or the UPs, or even ENB at this point. I was just trying to be a good lil modder, but I think I give up :: I appreciate everyone's ideas and support though. *I actually did find a few posts from others saying they would crash in this exact same spot, so yay I'm not alone? I also saw posts in the USKP Nexus thread about the ENB dll and UPs together producing crashes for a few people, so maybe it's ENB wonk... or maybe there's some sort of script oddity firing off in that area... If only there were a log that said 'hay u crashed cuz of xyz'! -

I personally use DAModder, but DAO Mod Manager is also fine. There's probably plenty of guides out there, but when I did my playthrough of DAO - DAA - DA2 (finished about a month ago or so), I used https://social.bioware.com/1736/blog/8671/ for DAO. I didn't use all of it, but I've used most of the ones on there. DA modding is a different beast. The only time I ever had problems was with using Improved Atmosphere (in full)... was crashing in Denerim for some reason. I removed maybe half of it and then it was fine. Other than that, you have to try a lot harder to break things (vs. Skyrim, Bethesda in general). The one thing I can think of is, you can't modify the Steam version to use more than 2GB (I think) of memory... kind of like when we were all using the LAA patch for Skyrim. That and mods that mess with plot flags, are your 2 big concerns. If you stick with stuff vetted by guides like the above though, g2g. -

Exactly. I'd typed a similar sentiment in a previous post, but edited it out for brevity's sake. Chaos would be rampant. So, I shall simply continue driving myself to drink trying to figure out what the hell I did. -

It does it with every binary I've tried. I just used 0.236 for several tests, and I literally JUST tested again with 0.251. Prior to that I was using 0.246 for QuietCool and 0.251/254 for RealVision/Phinix etc... It's terribly odd, capital O Odd really. I don't think it would be a memory shortage with only vanilla/DLC/HD files, and possibly USKPs + ENB? I'm using ENBoost and tried both SKSE 1.07 w/ memory ini and 1.6.16 with SSME. When I was running Skyrim Performance Monitor, it looked ok, I haven't bothered running it for the most recent tests though. I did test without the optimized textures; it still crashed with the USKPs enabled. Continually trying to come up with more conditions to test, soo I will keep plugging away at it. (aka ) -

Well, these are the only ones on there: v0.254, v0.236, v0.221, v13.7.13, v0.168, v0.132, v121212, v0.119, v0.108 TrueHDR, v0.103 Injector, v0.102 Tatsudoshi. I tried using 0.236, with just Boris' files, no presets. With that + SKSE 1.7 - no crash; added optimized vanilla files - no crash; enabled unofficial patches - crashed. Disabled those and tested with just the optimized vanilla files 3x just to ensure it was really working - no crashes. I decided to enable unofficial patches one by one - with just Unofficial Skyrim Patch, it crashed. Searching the ENB forums wasn't fruitful either. Mostly results similar to what I found on Google/Nexus forums. All Boris had to say in most of them was DX, "crapware" e.g. antivirus, Afterburner, EVGA Precision, or skyrimprefs.ini. I've used vanilla inis, and I don't have any of those programs running. I even completely uninstalled my AV for a bit (prior to seeing his posts). I had installed DX again in previous TS steps. I also just tried rolling back to SKSE 1.6.16 with the SSME patch. This version + optimized vanilla files + 0.236 - no crash. Enabled Unofficial Skyrim Patch, crashed. I tested the unofficial patches without the optimized textures, still crashed. -

@EssArrBee For ENB, I was initially using QuietCool which uses 0.246. I also tried RealVision, Phinix, and Bleak Realism which all used 0.251. Right before my last post was when I had updated to the newest binary 0.254. I can't seem to find my 0.251 files now though, if someone knows where I can dl them again :- I guess it wouldn't hurt to try swapping back. @redirishlord The crash happens with basically just the base game enabled, unfortunately, and I don't use Distance Overhaul. So I decided to wait to reply after I did a complete reinstall of everything... yeaaa it's still doing it. It seems like it's crashing now when ENB is enabled period, even with just the optimized vanilla/DLC stuff. I tested vanilla + unofficial patches without ENB, no issues. I suppose I prefer a problem with ENB, rather than the game itself so to speak... maybe I'll be able to find something on the ENB forums ~_~; -

So Google was not helpful, I searched through 15 pages of results and 20 pages of results just on the Nexus. Most posts were about ENB crashing the game at the Bethesda logo, or startup, etc... and most posts were just the OP and occasionally one person going "yeah I have the same problem." Basically, I determined that with vanilla + ENB, I didn't crash. But once I enabled the USKPs, it crashed. Enabling mods without ENB, no crash. I don't know why stuff would interact like this, but, there it is. I pretty much tried everything I could glean from what few helpful posts I found. I installed/reinstalled DX, set everything I could to admin, I reset the .inis, I tried the injector version, updated the ENB binary, wiped out my ENB Manager stuff and just copied an ENB directly from a freshly-unzipped archive into the Skyrim folder... nada. So at this point, I have nothing left that I can think of to do, besides obliterate and start over. I'm mostly updating this in case someone should stumble upon it in their own Google search for help. I leave you with this: -

You might be a demi-wizard, at least. It looks like with ENB completely disabled, it doesn't crash. I've tried 3 ENBs so far and they've all crashed. So, perhaps on the path to the cause/solution. ENBs are kind of my weak point in modding, so I don't know what about them could produce such an issue. To the google, tomorrow. -

It has sort of a non-standard layout, so perhaps I missed a variable when I was matching up the settings with my other ENB configs? -
I've been testing my setup thoroughly for awhile and had a small chunk of mods left to enable/test. I haven't done anything with Skyrim for a couple weeks, so I also downloaded and installed all of the updates for the unofficial patches/Arthmoor's other mods (unwise? PERHAPS). When I started testing (using the speedmult/tcl method), I used LAL to start as a patron at the Dragon Bridge inn, every time. I normally path northeast past Solitude, then go on towards Morthal/Dawnstar/Winterhold etc. for awhile. Previous tests were g2g, I could go 10, 15, 20 min+ with some hiccups but no crashes. After updating aforementioned mods + enabling some of the 15 REGS mods, I would CTD as I passed the Solitude docks and crossed the river into the marsh near Folgunthur/that shack. I disabled the most recently enabled mods from REGS - still crashing (same spot). I rolled back the updated mods, but not the unofficial patches - still crashing (same spot). I enabled my Vanilla profile - no crashing. I enabled my SRLE (ish) profile, disabling all mods but vanilla + USKPs - and crashing again (yes, same spot). I rolled back the USKPs to the 2.0.3 set - no crashing. I started enabling mods in small chunks - mostly no crashing. I actually got most of my mods re-enabled, but it doesn't like CRF, Falskaar, Book Covers so far, I may be forgetting one... I tried again with a more awake mind today, just now. Enabled only the vanilla files, no crash. Reinstalled the newest versions of the USKPs, enabled one at a time, crash x4. [i didn't try once more with the 2.0.3 set yet, wanted to finish this post and I close Chrome when I play] I really have no idea what to do at this point. I'd think I wouldn't have to wipe everything and reinstall Skyrim, since everything is in MO... I guess I could just use the older versions of the patches, but that doesn't seem like a real solution. Perhaps it's not a big deal because it's just one spot where it crashes, but it bugs me that it never happened before and I can reproduce it over and over and over... any ideas would be appreciated.
