"Changes the way skill books work, so that you may choose if and when you gain a skill from it. Upon activating a book, a menu will appear allowing you to select if you read the book and gain its knowledge at that time, or simply take it without reading."

I have used this mod with seemingly no problems in current playthrough of 70h+, and wouldn't play without it now. Anyone else using it?

I like to be able to manage my skills somewhat, and think the way vanilla Skyrim forces you to open every book before taking it is clumsy, unrealistic and annoying. This mod is an elegant and effective fix.

Before I found this I tried some mods which changed the names of skill books so that you'd know that (1) they were skill books and (2) what skills they related to. However, these created lots of conflicts (edit name of every skill book), and also still didn't get around the fact that had to read every book I picked up.

I've always wanted a mod that allows the books to provide a flat amount of experience for that skill. If you read the book at a low skill level you can jump up several points in the skill, if you read it at a high level you might go only a fourth towards the next level.

I'm not sure that is even possible though, so I guess I'll have to settle for this then.

Good find. For me, it's one of the most annoying Skyrim features ever!

The only thing is, reading the mod page:

Taking a book, by either sneaking or selecting the option in the menu will not account for ownership of the book. So even if it is technically stealing, no bounty will be added. I will try to work on this in the future.

. That's a dealbreaker to me unfortunately.

I used this mod before and it's great. I stocked my books at home to use them when my skill levels were at 90+ since trainers can't help you anymore past these levels. The vanilla "forced" skill learning is really annoying.

I just stopped used it because it was not on STEP list.

What the heck. I'll start using it again!

I believe Requiem includes this feature. Obviously you don't want to install a massive overhaul for one small feature but at least you'll know it's possible to mod it...

Hello, just a heads up if anyone is making a patch between Book Covers and NonAutomatic. - several of the books are missing their FormID in Non Automatic, message reads: [02000D64] just copy and paste the line "Player [00000014]" to resolve from one of the other book entries, or you will have issues when trying to overide to your new patch.

Of course Jake, sorry if my information was lacking,

1st I suppose I should have mentioned I used the Better version and not the normal version, so there could already be a difference right there.

The problem is in the section VMAD ( virtual machine adapter ) in which the script is set out for Non Automatic Skills Books.

I will not note them all, but one you could check for reference is the "The Black Arrow v.2"

The 3rd FormID reference there is giving the error: [02000D64]

All other script entries on the other books ( except for several others ) have "Player [00000014]" as Form ID.

Hope this was a little better...

Hi Ogham, no worries - your info was fine, but the extra info should certainly help! I will have another look in Tesvedit when I get the chance, hopefully this evening. Cheers

I checked this mod in TES5EDIT. Some of the scripts are referencing non-existing objects (properties in a script do, to be more specific). I don't know enough about testing to tell whether this is an issue, but I won't be using this just in case.
