I'm getting an error "Fatal: Could not find ini" when running the textgen.exe. I did move my Steam and MO folders to a different hard drive a few weeks ago and am just now updating my Skyrim mod list. I'm having trouble finding out how to fix this, does anyone have ideas?

Hello everyone,

I am using MO2 to run TexGen. When I attempt to run TexGen I receive an error message. The message says  "Fatal:Could not open registry keys: \Software\Bethesda\Softworks\Skyrim\"

1712539888_2023-01-1208_54_21-Window.thumb.png.2451011293772a9f751da0e8910787c7.png

I have tried fixing the issue by running the Skyrim Se game launcher through steam and MO2 to restore the game  registry settings but my attempt to solve the problem did not work. I also tried fixing the issue by turning off my antivirus but that didn't solve the issue.

Below is a copy of my TexGen Log.

What must I do to fix this?

As the message says, verify the game is being started in the desired game mode. The current mode is TES5. That is Skyrim.

However, you mention the Skyrim SE launcher, which means you actually want to start the game in Skyrim Special Edition, e.g. SSE mode.

From DynDOLOD_QuickStart.html in the download archive.
By default the tools start in Skyrim mode, which is the same as adding the -tes5 command line parameter. Add -sse as a command line parameter to DynDOLOD.exe/DynDOLODx64.exe or TexGen.exe/TexGenx64.exe to start the tools in Skyrim Special Edition mode. [..] See DynDOLOD-Shortcut.txt for help.

My Textgen keeps giving me an error about locating .ini. I followed the steps on the manual page for SSE including adding the -sse to the target line, but it still gives me the issue.

[00:00:00.077]    Fatal: Could not find ini

I am using NMM and am running the executable via the desktop shortcut option. Any help would be appricated.

Try launching the game from Steam and let it initialize and detect your video settings. Then quit immediately and try again.

NMM isn't a reliable mod manager, so other troubleshooting will be more difficult if you aren't using a more robust mod manager like Mod Organizer or Vortex.

Also, read the DynDOLOD OP and provide the logs required.

While you are using DynDOLOD 2, these explanations also apply https://dyndolod.info/Messages/INI-Files

You can see from the log that the data path, cache path and INI path are all empty. If you added line arguments to set path, they are wrong.

The tools name is TexGen.

Edit: I was able to get it to work by renaming the file SSELODGen64 instead of TES5LODGen64.  Unfortunately, I have 273 plugins so it won't work unless I get under 254 plugins.  Bummer.

How do I get xLOD to find Skyrim?  It is finding Fallout 4 just find, but when I change it to TES5LODGenx64, it keeps saying that the registry is wrong.

Fatal: Could not open registry key: \SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim\

Then in the Generation file:

Using Skyrim Data Path:
Using Scripts Path: C:\Games\Modding\Skyrim\xLODGen\xLODGen.109\xLODGen\Edit Scripts\
Using ini:
Fatal: Could not find ini

Game is working.  All ini files are in the correct places.  I didn't install LODGen in any of the folders that it wasn't supposed to go in. I've ran skyrim from the launcher twice, but still not working. Grrrrr.....

The problem that your Skyrim LE launcher can not update the registry of your Windows installation has nothing to de with xEdit or its tool mode xLODGen.

You sure you do not have Skyrim Special Edition and want to start the tool in SSE mode?

I suggest to read the first post and/or the Readme.txt included in the download archive.

Thank you for the response Sheson.  I was supposed to be using the SSE prefix. I found a post on the TED5LODGen Mod page on Nexus that pointed me in the right direction.  LODGen is working now, except for I am over the Plugin limit of 254.  I'm currently researching how to get under this limit.

I recently modded Skyrim quite heavily, first big modpack that doesnt crash. I used some trees and grass mods so I wanted to create LODs for them.

I installed Dyndolog and TexGen into my portable MO2 instance and inputed those parameters first: paramters:
"-m:"c:\Users\szymo\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition GOG" -p:"c:\Users\szymo\AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition GOG\plugins.txt" -d:"c:\Games\GOG Games\Skyrim Anniversay Edition\Data""

Both TexGen and Dyndolod told me that they cant find Skyrim.ini in ...\Skyrim folder. After looking for help in various posts online I found that i should put "-sse" in front of those parameters. So I did. But now TexGen and Dyndolod are telling me they cant find Skyrim.ini in ...\Skyrim Special Edition folder.

Any help with this? I got both two plugins (one for GOG od course) installed in mod manager. So all is prepared the right way.

EDIT: I inputed "i" instead of "m" before ini parameter - it found the right folder but it still says it cant find the ini, while Skyrim.ini is there in front of me. :(

See https://dyndolod.info/Official-DynDOLOD-Support-Forum#Post-Logs which TexGen or DynDOLOD log and debug log to upload to show the actual log/error messages.

There is no need to add the -sse game mode as command line argument. See https://dyndolod.info/Installation-Instructions and https://dyndolod.info/Help/Game-Mode

See https://dyndolod.info/Mods/Skyrim-Special-Edition-GOG-Skyrim-Anniversary-Edition-GOG and pay attention to the examples.
In particular, the example -m:"c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition GOG\" shows a trailing slash.
In particluar, the example -d:"c:\GOG Games\Skyrim Special Edition GOG\Data\" shows a trialing slash.

In the post you have also double quotes around the all 3 arguments, make sure that is not the case in the argument field of MO2.

Do not use i instead of m.

I only added double double "" as a quote here, sorry for confussion.

I followed the guide you provided and I use correct parameters. As stated I tried -m before -i. Thats what I get when trying -m:

[00:00:00.046]    TexGen based on xEdit x64 (5E5F5B6B) starting session 2024-04-10 20:30:04
[00:00:00.054]    Game Mode: TES5
[00:00:00.058]    Game Name: Skyrim
[00:00:00.061]    Using Skyrim Data Path: c:\Games\GOG Games\Skyrim Anniversay Edition\Data\
[00:00:00.065]    Using Backup Path: c:\Games\GOG Games\Skyrim Anniversay Edition\Data\TES5Edit Backups\
[00:00:00.069]    Using Scripts Path: C:\Games\Skyrim Użytki\DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\
[00:00:00.075]    Using Cache Path: C:\Games\Skyrim Użytki\DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD\cache\
[00:00:00.079]    Using Temp Path: C:\Users\szymo\AppData\Local\Temp\TES5Edit\
[00:00:00.084]    Using ini: C:\Users\szymo\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini
[00:00:00.090]    Fatal: Could not find ini C:\Users\szymo\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini

funny thing is that when I add -sse before parameters the last line changes too:

[00:00:00.087]    Fatal: Could not find ini C:\Users\szymo\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrim.ini

and when I switch to -m to -i it finally finds the correct folder but still cant find the ini while im staring at it in that folder:

[00:00:00.088]    Fatal: Could not find ini c:\Users\szymo\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition GOG

Its driving me nuts. I finally modded skyrim really well with lots of mods (around 800) while staying at the 251 esm&esp limit, tested and it works fine, but of course GOG version again is making problems. Cant find any solution to this.
