diznanl Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 (edited) Hello EssArrBee, I finished the FLNV mod install process and believe I was very successful... all mods appear to be working, I installed all the recommended texture packs at their recommended sizes... but I'm getting a lot of lag in both interiors and exteriors, opening my pip boy, and anytime there is steam/myst/waterfountains. Aside from the INI tweaks in the guide, I have the game set at Ultra settings at 4K My specs:i7-7700KGeForce 107016GB RAMSamsung SSD The one part of the guide I was not able to follow as extraction of BSAs (vanilla and mods) and then compression/optimization using DDSopt. I just couldn't follow the directions on either your page or the tool author's page. My questions:1. Is there an existing video on how to extract and optimize textures? Are there updated instructions that go step by step?2. Aside from optimizing textures, is there anything else I can do to fix lag... I suppose I could turn down fade distances, but hoping there's another solution. Active mods from Mod Organizer attached. Thank you in advance! diznanldiznanl-mods-09182017.txt Edited September 19, 2017 by diznanl
Kelmych Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Optimizing the vanilla textures generally has only a small effect on game performance unless you are doing it to reduce the size of the textures. With your system texture size reduction should not be needed. Moreover, the optimization tool isn't especially easy to use. The FNV game engine itself can have some lag no matter how good a CPU and GPU are used; it was built a long time ago and was not designed for 4K monitors or a lot of 4K textures. Have you used Performance Monitor or GPU-Z to look at your VRAM usage; with 4K (and sometimes with a lot of 2K textures with FNV) textures you might be using more VRAM than the game engine can handle? You might try seeing whether the High (vs. Ultra) settings make a difference; in some of the Bethesda games the Ultra settings might some small performance issues. Did you use BethINI to set the Fallout INI configurations, by the way?
paradoxbound Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Hello EssArrBee, My specs:i7-7700KGeForce 107016GB RAMSamsung SSDThe hardware isn't up to it the a single 1070 isn't going to have the grunt to deliver decent frame rates at 4K, you need a minimum of a 1080, ideally a 1080ti with a factory overclock for decent frame rates from a single card at that resolution. Your CPU is good enough but even there I would OC with a AIO liquid cooler to keep things stable. My Specs:i7 6700K (4.7 OC, Bethesda games are often choking on single threaded performance due to DX9/DX11 and scripts)GeForce® GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming WATERFORCE 8G (Factory OC and water cooling means it is stable at just over 2000mhz even during benchmarks and stress tests)32GB of RAM2 SSD one for OS and one for Gamesiiyama X4071UHSU-B1 40" ProLite 4K

Did you use BethINI to set the Fallout INI configurations, by the way? Thanks, Kelmych -- Using BethINI optimized settings seems to have smoothed out the game pretty well, even still at Ultra settings, though there is still the occasional lag (though much, much reduced). As to the VRAM, I used the vramsizetest recommended in the FLNV guide to determine the VRAM to set for ENBoost. I'll check GPU-Z on VRAM usage. I think I have successfully hit 4.8 pretty easily in the past. I have the game on its own SSD and the OS on its own SSD, so shouldn't be a bottleneck there.

Kelmych Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Yes, I meant Skyrim Performance Monitor. It also works with Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
diznanl Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 @kelmych -- thanks a lot! I used BethINI to go to High settings and Performance Monitor showed I was doing good. @paradoxbound -- thanks, too. I did a slight overclock on the graphics card and turned C-State off in my bios. Both solutions have lead to a much smoother game. I appreciate it diznanl
diznanl Posted September 25, 2017 Author Posted September 25, 2017 I discovered one more thing that massively improved performance: change EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks in enblocal.ini from FALSE to TRUE EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=true ... this was actually the biggest improvement to performance. I've been able to revert my OC and the game still runs as smoothly as vanilla game did, and at 4K.

I've been able to revert my OC and the game still runs as smoothly as vanilla game did, and at 4K.According to information regarding this option, Boris states that this option is for and related to bad drivers, and if this option winds helping you, you first try to reinstall your gpu driver, as this would be the likely culprit. Furthermore this option was introduced as a means for troubleshooting, and should not be enabled for normal play. The hardware isn't up to it the a single 1070 isn't going to have the grunt to deliver decent frame rates at 4K, you need a minimum of a 1080, ideally a 1080ti with a factory overclock for decent frame rates from a single card at that resolution. I have no experience with a 1070, but I have played around with a 1080 my buddy bought that I helped setup for him. If you look at my specs I am running a somewhat weaker spec than you, but I can achieve a solid 60fps at 2k, which I run, but I can achieve an average of 49fps at 4k, for modded Skyrim anyway. This is without ANY personal overclocking of either the gpu, cpu or ram. If a 1070 struggles for 4k like you claim, I have to believe something is not right with the system it is installed on.If you are basing your information off of any review(s) posted on the internet about any gpu performance, this is terribly misleading. Take my card for example, PowerColor PCS+ R9 290. The reviews you read would never suggest that I could achieve anything close to what I can at 2k and 4k. Shoot, 4k isn't even a tested option for this card.
