Audley
Nvidia announced last night that the new GTX 1080 will be arriving at the end of May. You can see all the new details on the website. I have not been this excited for a hardware release in... ever. What is everyones thoughts?
Guest
I'm sure you are hiding some gold bars around the house Audley. According to resident forum nerds on the internet, apparently this is a minor upgrade and you should wait until next year. Something something OC'd 980ti has better clocks. To be honest though, this isn't my area as I usually panic when I'm forced to put in new PC parts. "Agggh I hope this won't snap off! What was that cracking sound???" darkside
From my reading, 1080 is about 20-25% faster than TitanX/980ti. It is faster than 980SLI. It is definitely exciting card. 1070 is great as well. 1070 is reported faster than 980ti at $379. Great for 600, 700 series cards, or even 970 /980 owners looking for upgrade. I am sticking to my 980ti. It is running almost everything at 60 FPS(max screen refresh rate) at 2560x1080 resolution. Darth_mathias
I recently got at Zotac GTX 980ti so I'll be sticking with that. Since my wife almost killed when I brought it she won't be happy if i sell and update so soon.
Guest
This is why I had a moderate PC built, the guy told me to wait for HBM2 cards and get a mid-range one for now. I said okay and nodded, but had to look it up when I got home. :: It turns out he was obviously an honest chappy. Great advice from him for sho'. This isn't HBM2 I think right? Aiyen
Most likely wont be touching them, since I have nothing atm I cant run at 45+ FPS at 1440p. Just seems like a waste of money for very little noticeable gain.
TechAngel85
Yeah, I won't be getting one. I'm always at least one generation behind due to pricing. My 760 currently running everything I need it to without issue.
phazer11
I'll wait to RMA my 780 (it's sort of stable now, underclocked) till they come out then and hope they don't have any left in stock to replace it with and upgrade to 980 after I send a nastygram. Fourth RMA since I got a 780 which is the most I've ever had to rma a graphics card lol. Course I was supremely peeved they released the 900 series with like no warning a couple weeks after I bought my 980 #sad
hishutup
Idk, it seems that they are comparing to the reference 980ti which runs at 1ghz.I was able to reach 1600mhz boosted so doesn't seem worth it for me to upgrade but the Titan version will definitely be something I am looking at
Teabag86
I'm with Tech. My 760 4GB is plenty enough to run Skyrim. I'll probably upgrade when FO4 GOTY comes out and use alongside STEP pack recommends for all the cool mods.
Nozzer66
I'm pretty happy with my 780Ti for now. Maybe next machine I build I'll look at a 1080 or something.
MonoAccipiter
Yeah, I won't be getting one. I'm always at least one generation behind due to pricing. My 760 currently running everything I need it to without issue.Same. Besides, I play through games at way too slow a rate to need an upgrade before I eventually move for university. TechAngel85
I just watched the NVIDIA Special Event video series over this announcement and it is quite interesting and amazing. The pricing isn't bad either. GTX 1080 will be $599 and the GTX 1070 will be $379. Founders editions will be more but allow for "crazy" overclocking. Lots of good stuff and I think they'll be dominating the market with the pascal architecture. AMD better step up!
EssArrBee
I think multi monitor and VR stuff was pretty awesome. The lower overhead is exiting but will most likely only work in newer games. I'm curious if they will go back to double precision for the Titan model. It doesn't do number crunchers much good if it's single like the Titan X. I guess they have forgotten about shared memory for multi GPU setups as well since single card performance is growing at a freaky rate and they don't mind adding lots of RAM. Still it's exiting to see one generation outperform the last in SLI and a pretty sweet price. It is clear nVidia is trying to corner the VR market with this card and the VR/multi screen tech. Once they do that you can bet the prices will go back up.
mikegray
This is why I had a moderate PC built, the guy told me to wait for HBM2 cards and get a mid-range one for now. I said okay and nodded, but had to look it up when I got home. :: It turns out he was obviously an honest chappy. Great advice from him for sho'. This isn't HBM2 I think right? Nope. The new NVIDIA cards use a spruced-up version of the old GDDR5 memory interface - their thing is called GDDR5X, which is a bit more sprightly than your grampa's GDDR5, but isn't nearly as exciting as the HBM stuff. For now, AMD pretty much has a lock on HBT; however, that's also been a mixed blessing. Using first gen HBT memory in their last line of flagship cards (Fury line) limited them to 4 gb. They had faster memory performance than comparable NVDIA cards, but being limited to 4 gb slowed them down in other places. Being an AMD man, I'v been following this pretty closely, and AFAIK, they need HBM2 to get past the 4 gb limitation - but HBM2 probably won't really be a thing (commercially, at least) until 2017. (For my part, I'm running last generation 290x in crossfire - got the second cheap after the Fury line was released! - and I don't plan to upgrade until 2017.) (Note: Everything I know comes from obsessively watching LinusTechTips - so take me with several grains of salt.)
