  1. Many thanks for quick reply! Giving it a go now. S!
  2. Hello, nothing found in search for this topic. Long story why, but can the STEP Compilation Installer be upgraded to 'HighRes' if 'Normal Res' procedures were followed throughout the STEP-x install? I assume so, but would all earlier core mod installs (at medium) have to be reinstalled at high to benefit from the 'HighRes' STEP Comp Installer? OR would the HighRes compilation installer simply overwrite where applicable and spare the legwork of going back... Thank you.
  3. That's good news, because VW certain looks lovely and I'd love to give it a try. So just curious then, how involved is the install to get it to play testing on a STEP install? Or is this play testing on vanilla install?
  4. I have the same problem, no static objects LOD's, so I can see the windmill sails from the walls of Whiterun, but no mills and getting a lot of pop-up as I head down the road towards Riverwood... What is FO4 edit? Fallout4??? Perhaps a setting in DynDOLOD? I've re-read the relevant STEP sections, and while certainly possible I missed it, but didn't see any mention of FO4 edit "under requirements" or other procedures when generating LOD's. Trying not to be snide, but am sure we must seem clueless to the utility author, but put yourself in our shoes running this for the first time. I could quote more of the relevant sections of STEP guide and LOD generation, but moderators seem to be picky about board space... EDIT: OK, I see mention of FO4 linked in the "Read Update post" of the downloads page of DynDOLOD, which then links to page 216 of this thread, and then links to the FO4Edit prerelease alpha. Are we supposed to be using a "prerelease alpha"? See below. Why the heck is the DynDOLOD download called a "complete package" then??? If the intent of STEP is to make the procedure accessible to more people to enjoy a stable TESV, not just those with deeper modding knowledge, then this needs to be explained better in the guide. Yes, we need to be responsible modders, but perhaps too much drilling required here?
  5. To the OP, I have no 'learning challenges' (other than getting on in years) and also found the STEP guide to be frustrating at certain points. I should have taken notes as I overcame these hurdles to provide feedback, they mostly involved information/explanation that appears later in the procedure (usually at the patch steps) that would have been helpful to mention earlier or refer to. The guide is long, so reading the important bits from start to finish first usually means something doesn't stick when it comes to actually installing... Like most instructions, they are usually written by people too familiar with the process to remember what it was like to do it for the first time. This is not negative criticism, the STEP project is fabulous and the stable gameplay makes it well worth persisting with the install.
  6. "Heavy" meaning responsiveness? Or laggy input? FPS are down? Have you tried to adjust mouse input settings in-game?
  7. The OP is on the mark, perhaps a 'guide' is not needed, but a quick checklist as a reminder with links to bigger guides. It is tough to remember everything from that mountain of info that is the STEP install guide; it simply can't all stick... I've been enjoying STEP-X for a few months and have slowly added a few mods that I felt couldn't live without (Stealth and Smithing rebalances, canoe mod, Simply Bigger Trees...) and got away with forgetting to run one of the patch makers (think it was Sky Proc) until I added a mod that generated an error (I thanked the gods for the error, rather than a CTD...). Only when following the thrown error did I noticed/was reminded in the STEP guide where it says you should run it after any load order change: RE: placing added mods in respective similar sections may help with mental organization, but correct me if wrong, it really shouldn't matter for most mods beyond STEP other than making sure load order is correct in the end. Then again, I still at the stage of tending to pick simple mods that improve what I want without causing much if any conflict. Simply Bigger Trees is about as simple as it gets, but what a bang for the buck!
  8. So if I read correctly, it's as simple as placing Falskaar and Wyrmstooth up the list (near the DLC) and ensure subsequent mods have respective patches/versions enabled for the 3rd party 'expansions'. This is the first mention of these add-ons I've found here (though haven't looked indepth yet), and wondering if there is a stability/gameplay reason why given their high community endorsements, i.e. just curious. How about 'Moonpath'? As a cat lover, always wanted to travel with the Kajiits... As mentioned, there likely isn't a lot that overwrites these expansions, but there are many mods to comb through to make sure. If anyone knows, suspects, or has a list on hand, please provide to assist.
  9. OK thanks, I was thinking this was the case b/c my STEP install went very well (no reason to suspect bug or other issue), but the more I walked around other areas the more grass/flora I saw everywhere else, so... If vanilla condition, then I wonder why Bethesda made this so given the other areas? Some intern's or PA oversight? Or some other nefarious reason, such as grass eating/smoking Daedric worshippers hiding out in the Riverwood cellars and only emerging with their sickly pale skin in the dark hours to ... Oh nevermind...
  10. Hello, With clean STEP-X install (and only the rec'd STEP ini tweaks) there are no green grass 'sprites' in Riverwood or the surrounding forest. However, in other forests, plenty of grass and flower sprites. I can provide screenies if interested, or will add later on. My previous non-STEP install of TESV was modded (though bad practices) and had plenty of grass in Riverwood, so I do not know if 'no-grass-in-Riverwood' is default/normal. It looks like cows/horses have heavily grazed, or it's now a golf course... If this is not normal, please help with suggestions to grow grass in Riverwood (LOL).
  11. Quick STEP newbie question, I've read the entire thread but no clear answer for me at least: can VW "Overhaul" be installed into ongoing 2.2.9.2-X, and if so, any procedure issues (please detail)? I'm sure someone has done so, so please share. SIGNIFCANT EDIT: ... [PM sent] ... I take exception to an earlier post that used 'legality' to hide behind such unprincipled business actions.
  12. This is not my experience, and do correct me if wrong (and I will research the mod description itself, but no time at the mo...) but SSR does not add any objects! If you experienced an abundance of magic gloves I suspect it was some other mod you had installed. No mention of additional objects in Primary Description, or throughout the rest of the mod description... https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/28418/?
  13. Hello, quick search did not reveal any meaningful posts for canoe, boat, or paddle. Perhaps I'm not alone in thinking that Bethesda overlooked an important aspect of TESV by not letting the player travel the waterways/lakes/Sea of Ghosts by canoe/small boat with a paddle in real time. In fact there are a few mods that open up this possibility, but there is no discussion of them on this forum. Is this the correct subforum to do so, or should it be relocated under the main 'Mods' discussion forum ??? I've looked long and hard at 'Realistic Functional Boats' https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56410/? as well as 'Script Free Sailing Ship' https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/67727/? Both have pro's and con's judging by their descriptions, but I settled on giving 'Script Free Sailing Ship' a try on my first install of TESV last year, and now on my STEP-X install. I enjoyed it very much despite some at times quirky behaviour resulting from the canoe using horse scripts to save on resources (which is pretty damn ingenious if you ask me!). As the mod author, ElstarTomas, says: If anyone is interested in further insight on this mod, some of my experiences using it with STEP and 'Convenient Horses' (and 'Horse Followers' on previous install) then do post, but expect some lengthy replies... :)
  14. Thank you for advice, I have followed STEP ini settings at this time, and am a bit loath to try tweaking them further. RE: ETaC "lite", what I meant was doing a modular install leaving out some of the locations that caused me problems the first time, such as Winterhold external market and Dragonbridge. I also may have been confusing ETaC with one of the 'citizens' mods where there is the full NPC install or you can reduce the number of NPC's added during the install settings.
  15. Bumping this just because Purity (at least from the video I've seen and some opinions here) looks good enough to have its own separate TESV install. However, I too did not like seeing extra shrines introduced in stupid places...
  16. Many thanks for replies gentlemen, and for potential future support mentioned. I still love nothing more than just running around a smooth rendering Tamriel and exploring, so REGS was looking like the pack for me. Relatively speaking I'm new to Skyrim, and know enough about safely installing/using mods to be bit dangerous, as my very first character can attest, just one too many CTD finally killed him after 55 satisfying levels. Long live Gidmarr the Elder. Though have improved considerably by now following STEP guidelines, and my STEP-x is running well with just a few perk adjustment mods thus far (Smithing & Stealth rebalanced), I still do not know what the limits are for including some mods I really enjoyed the first time around. 1) The initials standing in for long mod names is understandable, but please put yourself in my shoes, it is another language sometimes. ICAIO= ? Ah, Immersive Citizens AI overhaul... maybe I can figure some of these out afterall... 2) I would consider Winterhold Expansion Ruins quite important for visual aesthetic considering the backstory, though lost a horse in the walls once; he wouldn't come out even with whistle, and I NEVER fast travel... 3) I tried ETaC on my first TESV install based on what it promised for immersion, and though my system is quite robust [ i7 4.4 GHz, GTX 980Ti 6 GB ], it was pretty stuttery. I assume that my bad modding habits were likely to blame there. So this or perhaps lite version should install well into STEP-X? 4) "4 problematic areas" are mentioned, and alluded to in a thread that provides merging instructs, but is not linked. If its handy please link.
  17. Thanks fellows, I was just joking about the late night DJ thing... LOL. Just FYI, an answer to my log question above
  18. Apologies, but would like advice as to what are the alternatives if this pack is not being supported any longer? What mods from the former REGS pack can be safely and easily included in 2.2.9.2-X ??? My system is capable: i7 @ 4.4 GHz, 8 GB 1600 RAM, GTX 980Ti 6 GB,... Not a modder or programmer here, just a player who can follow MO, LOOT, etc... instructions, but editing code for compatibility is not my cuppa. Thanks for any insight!
  19. I can recommend SSR as a great mod for addressing skill and perk imbalances in vanilla. It is true, one can play vanilla, and STEP, and improve stealth skills way too easily without taking any perks, it just isn't right... While just IMHO (and understand STEP-core mandate), the basic version of SSR improves things but the Full version is the better choice for immersive gameplay though certainly not 'hard-core' in any way. I haven't used SSR in my recent STEP-x install yet (new here) but was hoping to first find whether anyone has stumbled on incompatibilities/conflicts or other install difficulties with this mod and STEP-core or -x. I doubt there is, but don't like being the one to find these things out... RE: All Access it appears there is little to worry about, and given players have access to console whenever they want anyways, it is all about their personal restraint as to how they use it.
  20. A brief update. I looked into the papyrus logs of the Mac Pro TESV install and found mentioned in the very end entries after the last crash something like: VM freezing then VM frozen... I'm going to guess VM is virtual memory? So I went and tweaked Win7 settings for performance (following Guru3D rec's https://www.guru3d.com/), increased the pagefile size on a separate harddrive, added an 8 GB flash drive for use via ReadyBoost (only works if using a HDD not a SSD), and set to manual or disabled several services and autoupdates that were hogging RAM (damn you Win Media Player!). nVidia and Logitec seem to be especially insidious, and turning off/disabling some modules (eg 3D stereoscopic, and joystick manager) even in their software control panels\preferences did not stop the background services from running, it had to be done manually. So far so good, and maybe this will help someone else, though I feel like a late-night disc jockey with this thread, "is anybody out there?"
  21. I searched for "butterflies" in this topic but found nothing. 2.2.9.2 is my first STEP install, so not sure if the butterflies have always been this way due to the same mod being used, but they all fly in clumps together, seem to freeze in the air over my head (like they landed on a non-existant branch maybe?) and are just too easy pickings. Not sure what mod I used before STEP, but they acted much more normal and were more of a challenge to grab.
  22. Many thanks for quick reply. Yes, I know that system has memory limitations but it seems to otherwise be handling Skyrim well, and the two crashes thus far are very random, many hours apart, though too early to see a pattern. Just an FYI, the first crash occurred after my son's new character had escaped/left the Helgen tunnels to exit onto Skyrim outdoors (just minutes into the new game/install). I then made some GFX slider adjustments and verified ini settings within MO and he happily played for hours, ran all over Whiterun tundra, cleared Bleakfalls Barrow, and mopped up the brigand fort to the SW (name escapes me). If worse comes to worse, I'll install vanilla TESV as that ran without issue for him for several days. Just thought the comparison would be interesting for some people here.
  23. Hello. First off many thanks to all involved in STEP project. Great effort. As the thread title describes, I recently installed STEP extended (medium settings) on my son’s older computer, and then transferred the <nearly complete> mod install Skyrim folder to my newer gaming system where I finished off just the last step with high LOD patch. Medium LOD on older system. My son’s computer: an ex-graphics workstation Mac Pro 1,1 running Bootcamp Win7 Pro x64 on HDD 4 x 2.66 GHz Xeon processors 4 GB 667 RAM (long story, Bootcamped Win OS apparently only recognizes 4 GB total, while system has 18 GB installed on Mac side) GTX 560Ti 2 GB with AM cooler. My gaming system: Win7 Pro x64 on SSD i7 2700K mild oc’d to 4.4 GHz (no voltage change) 8 GB 1600 RAM GTX 980Ti 6GB hybrid RESULTS: The i7 system runs the STEP-X install smooth and flawlessly over 6+ hours of gameplay so far –– all except my grass has disappeared (!) but other ground foliage/flowers are still present (please suggest how to resolve? Screenshot can be provided). Not unexpected, the Mac Pro provides less fps, but most importantly has also crashed twice in only about 3 hours of gameplay. I turned papyrus logging on after first crash, have yet to look after the second crash last night. I want to mention the single install (transferred to second gaming system) was painstakingly done, each major step checked and double-checked, all ini edits, graphics settings, mods, etc. So I am relatively confident 98.9% that all is good on that end. My next step to isolate is to ensure that unnecessary background system processes are not causing a memory issue, since the Mac Pro has unresolvable RAM challenges (see above). I’ve followed Guru3D’s advice for OS optimization and have used a small app in the past called ‘Process Lasso’ to manage start up and suspend such memory hogs. I noticed that Windows Media Player update exe was active in Task Manager, and am wondering if any sort of autoupdate may have triggered these two crashes. Any other advice on troubleshooting would be appreciated. If anyone is interested in seeing the gist of the Mac Pro papyrus logs, post here and I’ll provide once at home.
  24. Hello, new to this forum, so patience please, I'll try to be brief with any noob question(s). I'm very late to the TESV world but REALLY enjoying it (no news to any of you). I modded without STEP structure via MO, LOOT, etc. because I didn't know about STEP, but funny enough, the mods I picked very much mirror STEP core and some extended selections. I managed to get to level 50 before more frequent random CTD's rocked my Tamriel. Before that very infrequent CTD's were nothing that 'Fast Travel' past a geographic location wouldn't solve. Am now reading, reading, reading the STEP guide. Many thanks to those involved, it is monumental. I know it is too late to use STEP for my level 50 game saves, but I've just installed TESV for my tween son, added the DLC and HD content off STEAM, cleaned them correctly -- but no other mods. I walked away while he 'tested' the install, and within an hour he is at level 4 or 5. Go figure. So some early in-game progress has been made, he is thane at Whiterun, BUT no mods yet. Can STEP be confidently applied to his install at this early stage? I am used to creating content and modding other games (flight sims) and it is normal to add one mod, test in-game for problems, add another, etc. so is this step-by-step mod install procedure the same here, or does STEP advise ALL the core mods to be installed BEFORE playing the game? Thank you for any quick advice. So many other questions, but I will refrain and do my best with the search function.
