I'll install tonight and post the vid on thread liked above EDIT: New SROHD vid posted (big lighting-diff effect ... I am not using any post processing in any of these examples either. this is pure vanilla skyrim with only diff being the textures installed)

Jealous :) I had 12,61 in that test Intel Core i5-760 @ 2.80Ghz, 4GB ram with GeForce GTX 560-Ti (1280mb) That is basically my rig @ home actually:Intel DP55KG i5-760 OC @ 4.0GHz (20*200) 8Gb RAM @ 1600 2Xfire ATI 6850 (1Gb) OC ~10% I assume I will get about 2-4 FPS better than you due to the Xfire, but we'll see ;)

I present numbers for the VRAM use of some popular texture overhauls in the DDSopt Guide and on this post (which is currently being transferred to the guide)

My old box would have been 9 this year... it was a P4. You must be using a core-2 duo or the like? Must have cost you a LOT back then! I always buy 6 mo--1 yr behind current market :P

FYI I posted two videos of the vanilla textures (optimized and non-optimized). @Starac If you want to PM me a link to your new version, I can add that video to this post as a direct compare. (looks great by the way, and I see that you have added more effects of Newtonian physics, which is appreciated).

Not seeing that user (there is a "Borisni" with zero posts). How to find the hardware analyses?

Actually, I run at 1920x1200, and I run STEP quite well with 1k texture overhauls (VRAM is your main limiter I think... but I do not know AMD processors very well) I think that many of the (FPS)-(FPS!) indicators in the STEP guide should be changed to (VRAM)-(VRAM!) indicators to distinguish more between GPU memory bottlenecks and CPU bottlenecks. 2k texture overhauls are (VRAM!), and 1k are (VRAM).

OK, here is some video of that ice. EDIT: Added a third video showing the new SROHD muddy-ice texture. Note the overall lighting difference in the SROHD image compared to vanilla. No difference between any of these loaded save games eccept for the texture replacement. Added that link to the wiki.... any word on the status of the WB 296 release? I am still using the SVN, and it works great so far. Need to update the guide at that time.

Thanks for this tip. I have never noticed, so I will make it a point to investigate in game and post a video here for all to witness ;)

Well, if THAT is ice, I am amused :D. Notice that these are on a slope Clear, shiny, ice should behave like puddles...

@frihyland Just look at the ground. Very easy to see the diff if you download both images and open in Win Photo Viewer and simply use your arrow keys to switch between. You can also load each image into a new tab and quickly switch between that way. @Starac Yes, more white 'spots', but also more depth. I am wondering which is more true to the original intent and which one is more 'correct'. I also am no fan of those textures (but I really HATE the meshes). As I said previously, I have new-found respect for your work and that of others that go the extra length to do things correctly and meticulously. Cheers

@StaracAs Vond states, I have proven that your textures are properly compressed in almost every instance (if there is an exception, I will let you know, but I cannot verify right now). DDSopt will not automatically alter compression or mipmaps if it finds them already in the proper format. When processing your textures, there was only a roughly 3 Mb in/out byte difference, which is nothing compared to vanilla and SKYHD, which each have much bigger in/out byte differences (indicating many fe. DXT5 that should be DXT1, etc.). DDSopt is not like other texture optimizers . It was developed by Ethotron (NIFopt) with the assistance of many texture/graphic artists. He is also an "expert" in compression formats and has a dev record to prove it. Can you tell me which of the following look right to you with regard to vanilla Windhelm ice? Ex1 Ex2

Agreed. I have firsthand experience that "saveini" writes out to ALL INIs and "refini" works just fine for reverting uGrids.

Good quote from the beth forums. This is good info. Perhaps worthy of inclusion in the OP or at least the upcoming Performance Guide (:ahem: ... IS there an upcoming Performance Guide?) -

If you mean that you would like to process a BSA into another BSA minus any*.txt files, then yes. You can use the filter in the center of the Browser Tab to type in a "*.txt" wildcard, click [Apply], unselect the files, remove the "*.txt" wildcard filter, and click [Apply] again. Then when you process, the ouutput BSA will not contain the unselected files. "unpacking" must be done regardless, but this way, you unpack and repack in a single step. I recommend against using any BSAs, as they aren't as configurable and also take up a plugin slot. However, using them is not in any way "bad," just a bit restricting. -

Working on the DDSopt guide on the wiki now. This will take some time, as it is largely a revision of a previous guide, but with a whole lot more added from my latest round of testing. Will need to create a big table I think. -
TC will likely want the main downloads to go through the Nexus to keep counts accurate (and the 'mod' highlighted on the Nexus as a top 10). If nothing else, I think that we need to incorporate a download counter if we host any files here.

@Starac To echo Bealdwine regarding Windhelm 'ice' textures. Please see this post and also this post . Your feedback on the effect of DDSopt on this ground texture would be helpful. The blurred vanilla bersion looks wrong to me, and I cannot tell if this should be ice and also I don't see any reflections. The DDSopt'ed versions have more detail and are speckled more with what could be ice or snow, but it is more detailed at least. Those stone/snow/ground meshes are also among the worst in the game IMO. Your textures also appear to be correctly compressed, which is not the case for many vanilla or SKYHD if I remember correctly.

I didn't change snow on mountains at all. They look a little bit better because mountain normal maps are more detailed. Next update will have better mountains snow. Btw, what is SHD? Skyrim HD or Serious HD? SHD = Skyrim HD ... good point. I start using SKYHD = Skyrim HD and SERHD = Serious HD and SROHD = Skyrim Realistic Overhaul... maybe if we spread the word, this will stick. I hate unnecessary typing. Glad to hear about the snow, and happy that you agree with this point I can always try swapping only the normal maps from BRAM :D This is a really good point @Starac Do you think that it is worth considering relative color palettes due to the global effects of post processors (assuming that you agree that the entire SR palette is off)

@ PatimPatam Good compares. I agree with most of your points; however, I do like the SRO mountains best, but am unhappy with the snow on the mountains. SHD has much better snow, especially close up. Looks like SRO kept the crappy vanilla snow with minimal change. thanks for the info. I have not tested Serious at all, but will make it a point to do so. You might want to check out the benchmarks and screens I made of vanilla SHD and SRO over on the "Advice, Hints & Spoilers" forum > "Good performance Hunting" thread.

It may be that Vano overwrites those ice patches? I can think of nothing else :scratching head: -

OK, I finished my relatively big undertaking of creating standardized benchmarks for effects of DDSopt: IMAGES REMOVED... OUTDATED There is LOTS of info here, so I will be adding to the new Texture-Overhaul/DDSopt Guide on the wiki with links to all of the screens (of which there are MANY... one for each benchmark. Will need to wait for s4n to ready HighSlide galleries first I think to facilitate proper compares) In my hours of screwing around with this, I have a new found respect for SRO as my favorite texture overhaul. SHD still has a few textures that I prefer, but I have not yet tested mixing my preferences to see what it looks like in game. I will do that next and post those screens at some point for eval. In the meantime, here are some compares of (L/T-R/B): SHD2k-SRO2k | Markath | Riverwood | White Phial | Whiterun | Windhelm IMAGES REMOVED... OUTDATED Anyway, hope this is useful until I can get this properly created on the wiki.
