Requesting Help in Understanding a Few Things About STEP
Aiyen replied to AddictedxGamer's question in General Skyrim LE Support
My run normally start in riverwood, then I run past falkreath towards markarth by road only. From there towards Solitude. Then I go through morthal towards dawnstar and onwards towards winterhold - windhelm and finally riften and then back to riverwood. I do those 3-5 times and as long as I can get at least to dawnstar I am quite pleased. I have had examples where I could do the entire run but those cases are quite rare... there will always be a freeze or CTD most likely. I do all of that at a speed mult of 500 so the entire run takes 5-10 min. Ofc if you find a location where you ALWAYS CTD or freeze then that is something to look into, since then there is at least that one location where you will most likely always have issues and then it is best to sort it out. Also if you have all the DLC then go to windhelm and travel to Dragonborn and back again to test that load point. If you have too much stuff then that load is one of the first to fail according to experience. Hmm odd about the weapons mod.. I am fairly certain that someone might be able to help out since it is a fairly popular mix. I do not use them personally since I do not like a too huge diversity in my weapons and armor.... I would rather spend my memory on other things, like diverse textures on enemies and animals using skyproc patchers. -
beginner questions about STEP setup
Aiyen replied to rothbardian's question in General Skyrim LE Support
Very much yes. This is also why some make specific weather .esp´s etc for their ENB.. since then they have full control over the visuals. Building on top of the vanilla ones is just a cause for headaches for a number of reasons. This is especially true for interiors, which is why ELE image spaces should always be used. In general there is only one set of values for ALL interiors in ENB, hence you need to create the foundation and diversity of your interiors from an .esp. Also skyrim is a huge game, and most preset creators do not actually spend much time playing the game so they do not go test in every single location of the game. This is another reason ELE is so good.. you do not have too. If you make a few choice locations look good you know ALL will look good. For the player this is also a good thing, since this means you can quickly test in a number of locations and see if you like what you see and then know that this is how it will be everywhere.. to varying degrees ofc. Another bonus is that it also makes it very easy for you to tweak a preset to your liking if you want it a little bit brighter for example. Since it is just one value you need to change, and in some presets you can do all of this from ingame... so no need to go out and look around in the code etc. In general I would only recommend ENB presets which have GUI control of their shader files as well.. if they do not it is not as easy to tweak them, and generally mean that they are really really outdated. Ofc. they can still look really good, but it is always nice to have the ability to tweak those few things you might not like. As for presets to check out.. and which cover a rather wide range of different visuals styles are Vividian By Mangaclub and benhat Serenity By Prod80 Natural lighting and Atmospheric by Confidenceman Insomnia by Insomnia Sombre 3 by Maeldun0 Grim and Sombre collection by Wolfgrimdark Finally you can check out Skylight by me. If you can find a version of K ENB those are also most definitely worth checking out. Those files are not on the nexus anymore due to various reasons. Ofc. if you find you do not want the latest effects like cloud shadows etc. etc. then you can never go wrong with project ENB, or seasons of skyrim, and in general all who are made by bronze316. Skyrealism by indegonecko is also worth checking out. I could ofc continue to phrase up the entire list of presets.... but those will at least get you started. There are many more very good ones out there as well. -
Installed a few new mods, which is causing CTD on loading?
Aiyen replied to O0mix0O's question in General Skyrim LE Support
I would just do it manually. I doubt you can find a specific program that does it for you... unless you happen to know a programmer who can setup a quick batch file for it. Ofc you need to test on a clean save when you add new mods. Too many weird issues if you test on an already existing save. It could also be some nav mesh things (These decide how actors move in the game world etc.) that go wonky due to new houses... and all sorts of fancy stuff down that road. -

Yes extended = all the things! As for the weapons mod question then I am sure one of the packs already include that. So you can perhaps use those as a guideline. If not then I am sure someone else will chip in with those details! Even the vanilla game is not 100% stable when you do stress tests... sometimes it just CTD. Skyrim is a complex game... when you mod it gets even more complex, and issues will be there. You should always do multiple tests.. and then look at the general picture they paint. If you get mostly stable runs then all is most likely good. If you only get quick CTD´s then something is off. Also another reason to be running and not flying is that the AI behaves weirdly with its pathfinding and animation etc. when you fly and they try to attack you sometimes. This in itself is a rather unstable act. (For example dragons will fly with their heads between their legs and spew fire at you in that position if you fly... sometimes.) -
Does this also only happen if you ONLY use the default files from enbdev.com ? Hence no preset specific files etc. Also does it happen if you actually remove and replace all the files manually instead of using the manager ?

Installed a few new mods, which is causing CTD on loading?
Aiyen replied to O0mix0O's question in General Skyrim LE Support
Transition CTD´s can be related to not having enough memory to load all game assets.. or there simply being too many game assets overall. It can also be because of a missing or bad mesh.. any of those will instantly crash the game upon loading. I am not really familiar with most of the new house mods on that list, so cannot say if they are just pushing you over any limits.. but perhaps, some house mods are extremely detailed. You can quickly check the various mods meshes folder if they have any and see if any of the files have a size of 0kb.. which most likely mean that the file failed to install properly. Perhaps someone else with more experience on the related mods will chip in with some details. -

deadbody: Just a slight change to your method.. instead of doing the whole intro you can just open the console from the main menu and type "coc riverwood" and you get in game with the default char and then do the flying or running thing. In fact running is "better" then flying since when you run you also trigger enemies etc. which puts more scripting on etc. In general I find that a speedmult of only 500 is better then the flying... Overall during installation you only really need to test if you can start the game at all. This ensures that you got all masters placed correctly etc. After that you can go coc from the main menu and run about at various locations and see if everything looks normal. Finally you can do a quick play with godmode on from the helgen intro and up to the first dragon kill. Most general issues if any will be apparent doing that. Ofc. later you might find the odd bug etc. but then you can always come back and ask about it. As for the installation of CORE vs Extended... For CORE: Only stuff with green on them For extended All of the things. You can just install all of the things, and then manually only select the mods with green on them later. hope that helps a little bit more. -
beginner questions about STEP setup
Aiyen replied to rothbardian's question in General Skyrim LE Support
Yes altering the core settings of ENB is the same for all.. you can press shift + enter by default (This is another reason to keep your own enblocal.ini file.. since some authors change these keys to something else!) to open the ingame GUI and alter most things on the fly. There are a few differences that involve quality values in the shader files... mainly DoF files. Most mention it and it is as simple as changing a number to another number or comment out a line. As for the list then that is most likely not going to happen since we all have very different opinions about what "enhancing the vanilla experience" means. You can create an ENB that just adds the ENB effects on top of the vanilla post processing.. but even then there will be certain variations possible. -
beginner questions about STEP setup
Aiyen replied to rothbardian's question in General Skyrim LE Support
It is not like Realvision should be avoided for performance reasons.. With a few adjustments it can perform like most others. It depends on how much effort you want to put into it. But out of the box then other presets will perform better without any noticeable differences in terms of effects... unless you do closeup screenshot compares etc. But overall stuff like your grass/shadow settings is going to affect performance much more then the most ENB settings. DoF is a personal taste... Some of them cost insane amounts of performance but will look really good, and the other way around as well. In general due to the large amount of blurring being done then the cost of DoF is always going to be rather high compared to other effects. There are many different ways of doing DoF.. some just use full screen blur, some use more specialized ways of doing blur... for example causing bright sources to look hexagonal. It is a fun shader to play with.. and it can dramatically alter the playing experience. Try out a few different ones.. it is as simple as copy pasting one file and you got a new DoF. Some ENB´s come with custom weathers and some rely on CoT and the weather patch, and some are again just using the vanilla weathers. If an ENB does come with addition .esp´s then you should at least try them out. They will mean a more tailor made experience where everything will blend in better. ENB´s more or less always contain the same files with the same names, or have all their extra files in a specific folder so they are very easy to just copy paste replace. The only file you should not change every single time is the enblocal.ini file... once you have a working on of those then just stick with it. The only time where you need to adjust it is if a preset requires an additional .dll file.. then you need to put in the name of the file in the proxy section. But again overall.. first order of business should be to find the preset where you enjoy the colors etc.. then you can always adjust the performance after. -
Guess we can conclude that it is just because the other presets you have tried then have too many effects on at some quality levels which are not satisfactory for you, and there are no real hardware issues etc. As for setting up the enblocal.ini file then you can play with the default one if you only use STEP core... However with your system you should easily be able to use the following. [MEMORY]ExpandSystemMemoryX64=trueReduceSystemMemoryUsage=trueDisableDriverMemoryManager=falseDisablePreloadToVRAM=falseEnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=falseReservedMemorySizeMb=512VideoMemorySizeMb=8192EnableCompression=trueAutodetectVideoMemorySize=false Also the global setting ofc. needs to be set to false or you disable the graphics part of ENB. Hope that helps, otherwise just post more questions!

beginner questions about STEP setup
Aiyen replied to rothbardian's question in General Skyrim LE Support
CoT will not be part of Core because it overwrites and replaces the vanilla weather systems... which is not what CORE is about. There are no stability issues what so ever. As for ENB´s then it is simply a matter of trying them out and see if you like them. Yes it is rather time consuming, but there are large lists of screenshot compares etc to help ya out. Also most ENB´s have somewhat up to date youtube reviews you can check out. For the portability: As long as you copy your profiles and mods folder.. or just your entire MO folder then everything is portable... or at least very easy to setup again since all the files are present. -
Yeah that sounds a bit odd with that system. Unless you play at like 1600p resolution. Even though I kinda dislike doing it then I am just going to suggest that you try out my ENB preset (Skylight ENB). It might not be the most pretty around, but it does have the highest performance/quality ratio of just about all presets out there. Using that I get around the FPS you report at 1440p with a GTX 660 2Gb... so you should be in the 30-50 range with your card. As for the other specs then our systems are also similar. If you still get a lower FPS then me using it then something is most likely wrong at the hardware level... perhaps your graphics card is not getting all the power it requires etc. We can look at that if the time comes. If you end up having a decent performance using skylight, but not some other preset, then we can look at what can be done about that as well down the road.

beginner questions about STEP setup
Aiyen replied to rothbardian's question in General Skyrim LE Support
Guess I will cover your ENB questions. If you got the hardware to use ENBoost do it... what it does is to allow you to use more memory for textures then otherwise possible. If you do not use it you will CTD when you use many high detail textures. It is part of ENB as a whole. So when you download a preset based on v.254 it will be incorporated already. As for choice of ENB preset... most have a really low ratio even though they really nice pieces of work... many more so that Realvision imo. In fact Realvisions popularity is its biggest issue... it has been "stagnant" for ages, since well... if it aint broke dont upgrade it. This also goes for performance.. since realvision is stuck on older files it kinda is not able to compete with more optimized pieces of work... vividan being among these! But ultimately it all comes down to what visuals you want.. try out a few different presets and see which you like more... and decide if you are willing to pay the performance cost those visuals require. As for Enhanced ligthing then yes.. you always need it (The image space part only) for all presets! If it ever hurts to use it then it just means that you have a preset that is not really polished to begin with. For the mergeing then no.. since if you use files that are dedicated to a specific ENB preset, you most likely wont get a fine tuned effect on another. -
Magic overhaul recommendations
Aiyen replied to Crimson13's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
I only use Empowered magic. The reasons are simple It does not add silly OP spells. But changes the default spells in ways that make sense. It adjusts most things that make magic OP (Mainly spell staggering, and dual cast effects) contains fixes for various vanilla issues. Have full support for every DLC. Since it only really changes or adds to content already in the game then it is simpler to control how it works with other mods in conflict resolution. Another thing I enjoy is that most of the changes work really nicely with the shouts I have tried... some of the other magic mods that add super silly spells tend to become even more silly once you throw shouts into the mix as well. -
Impressive. Hope you get some practice out of this so you can do something similar even faster in your next project!
-
Please keep the topic on the mod, and leave the moderation to... well me and the rest of the purple/pink squad! If you find something is out of line then make a report of it and it will be looked at, please do not make posts that will just derail the thread! As for the mod then it is interesting, since children have always been a rather weird thing in skyrim... so nice to see more mods that provide a different perspective on it.

from light to dark place effect in Opethfeldt
Aiyen replied to Roberbond's question in Post-Processing Support
Moved thread. I can be shameless and suggest my own enb since it has working adaptation. Skylight ENB. There are a few others that have it to varying degrees, but most tend to just disable it entirely for various reasons. One of the main ones being that they use palette textures. Sadly there is no simple copy paste solutions... it all depends on how the files you are using are setup, as well as what values you are using etc. In short you would need to understand some basic HLSL and basic C++ in order to really get it done properly. -
Nothing weird about having blue shadows... most ENB presets use dark blue as the color of choice for dark pixels, since it helps smooth out the image more then other colors. Depending on location this effect will be more or less pronounced. Also it depends on your monitors calibration. However it is first and foremost an ENB "issue". If you want to change it you will have to tweak your ENB settings until you are happy. Or try out a different preset if you do not want to go about tweaking yourself.

Water flickers/shimmers momentarily

Water flickers/shimmers momentarily
Aiyen replied to peppergomez's question in General Skyrim LE Support
If you mean what I think you mean, then it is a engine rendering issue which cannot really be fixed... would need screenshots to verify though. Distant water flickering is there ENB or no ENB... as I have understood it then it is just a consequence of the way water have been implemented in the game. -
First all the formalities I guess. Welcome to the forums, you can get your fancy yellow mod author bagde by contacting Z929669.. if you so wish. As for the mod itself, then thanks for making it! Always nice to see people make detailed mesh replacements.. considering all the issues that it entrails! As for the performance, then as I said earlier then this mod on its own should most likely not affect performance in a noticeable way, but when mixed with other mods that also increase the poly count then you might start to notice it. Afaik then performance/poly count does not scale linearly, and depends on GPU model etc. hence it stands to reason that on some systems it will just be the proverbial drop that cause a noticeable impact. Even more so if they also got some weird lighting mods in that alters stuff. I will just leave the specifics on how to optimize the mesh further in the hands of people who have actually worked with altering meshes in the game! And once again welcome, nice to have another mod author comment here!

Ah yeah thanks josh! I still need to study much more modeling! Just so far all modeling and sculpting I have seen then they tend to avoid triangles unless it is impossible. But that is also for different applications then gaming. Good to know As for the memory.. Then dx9 has to mirror.. hence it is not because of page file, but because of how the API works. And the limit was made in the 32bit era, hence 4Gb is the max. Enbhost still allow you to use more memory, but dx9 would force the textures to be assigned to the new process and not skyrim itself. Edit: So in other words, skyrim can assign more memory for texture use.. but it can only actively render worth 4Gb. Hence why you can still overload even a titan if you go full 4k textures... At least that is the way I understand it so far.
-
You would not be able to use more then 4Gb VRAM anyways, since DX9 is limited like that. In the future this is not an issue since dx11´s cap is .... quite a bit higher. Also yeah triangles in meshes are in general a bad thing that should be avoided if you can... at least that is my understanding so far diving into the world of modeling. The reason for this is that they just cause all sorts of shader artifacts and general ****ups which are not desirable. I did not think it was that bad for this mod though.. but well the mesh do not lie! Oh well one can politely tell it to the author and then hopefully he/she has an interest in making a better one.

You can override the vanilla LOD generator with full detail models if you so wish using the CK. Some mods do this to avoid the pop in issues when you transition from LOD to detail model. So LOD´s do not negatively affect performance, unless you override it. If do that AND use models with increased poly counts, then you will ofc. experience even more of a slowdown in areas where the LOD generation is not... optimal. If you wanted to see what I mean with the LOD generation not being optimal means, then free camera your way up and see how much stuff is actually loaded even though it is not required at all since you would never be able to see said model anyways.. even if you transition to a different grid. Just to make it perfectly clear, for all who read this. I am not saying that this mod will plummet your FPS! :P I am saying that you need to make a mental note, or an actual one, that this mod increase poly count, which will contribute to overall less FPS.
-
Textures themselves once loaded do not affect rendering any further. The reason you see an impact is that your reaching your memory limits.. which cause bottlenecks... but once the textures are loaded then your FPS will return to its base level again. A higher poly count will affect rendering at all times, hence you will get an overall drop in performance. Even more so if the mesh also have shadow cast and receive enabled. Since higher detail meshes means a more complex shadow calculation. (The issue with SMIMS chandeliers is an example of this) Too see the LOD thing all you have to do is toggle free camera in the console and go up... eventually you will see just how much stuff behind mountains etc. that is still rendered, hence cost performance. In some locations this become more noticeable then in others. If you are using any mods that also force "high" detail models to be used instead of the LOD versions, then performance drop due to this will only get worse. Overall this is also why for games, if you can do something with a texture (Using normal maps, parallax or tessellation etc) then that is preferred since it is less costly. Hope that clears up what I mean! :)
