Why do mod authors choose RAR over 7z?
Aiyen replied to DoubleYou's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
I have only used rar files since I first got the program back in the dawn of time... Back then I checked various things, and when I did not see any difference then I simply used the most lightweight and convenient program to the task. And last when I checked in more recent times then this was still the case.... it something I return to about every 7-10 years I guess! :) Also used to use it as a counter for how long it was since I formatted my computer... since it always had that nice days counter saying you had been using it for X amount of days without registering. But if I ever actually open the program then it is most likely by mistake since I always use the right click function to just extract and compress.. Never had a reason to open it. -
The easy solution is simply to load up your list in tes5edit then find imagespaces and see which mod wins. There are more mods that alter imagespaces around. The two mentioned are just the "usual" suspects.
-
When updating from one version to another you only need to copy over the d3d9.dll and the enbhost.exe.. all other files are preset dependent, or if anything new is added to either enbseries or enblocal.ini they will automatically write in default values. They will never overwrite old setting however as long as the parameters have not changed name.

Tech: Sorry that sentence was not the best formulated. My point was that if you have your list setup so your game can actively use up to 8Gb of RAM then the issues you experience with having 8Gb and 4Gb VRAM would most likely be fairly similar to having 16Gb of RAM and only 2Gb of VRAM... you simply shift what is the limiting factor around. Overall in my experience then RAM lacking issues have a far greater impact on performance then lack of VRAM. Edit: Also the whole point with this was that considering that it is cheaper to get 4-8Gb more ram than 2Gb more VRAM then it might be worth considering for the OP! :) Nearox: In your case then yeah the GPU would probably the limiting factor.. it is approximately 20% worse overall then a OC GTX 660 which I have and would explain the difference. I am not sure if there is a generation difference, but if there is then that would also matter a great deal since architecture differences matter when it comes to bandwidth. I would expect that the difference would also be what prevents you from running at higher resolutions without severe issues. Not sure about the finer details of i5/i7 difference when it comes to cache and memory bandwidth other then they are linked and matter, in data swapping cases more so then the clock speed. For reference then a GTX 760 would be about 15% better then the GTX 660 overall. And for final reference then the top models are about x2- x2.5 times better.

SKYRIMLE Guide to run SRLE + REGS + ENB on Medium Systems
Aiyen replied to Nearox's topic in Step Skyrim LE Packs (retired)
Make sure you still have the proper meshes or you will get weird lighting behavior such as flickering. You might have some parallax mods lower in your list which overwrite certain meshes. -
It is not a matter of filling up the VRAM.. as you know then the readings are essentially not useful for anything, since even if it says it is full does not mean it is actively used (When STEP core can report using 2Gb of VRAM you just know to take the value with a grain of salt.). The only real way to see if you got VRAM limitation is when you start to get excessive stuttering while panning and loading new assets etc. with a current load, but it goes away if you reduce said load. When you say something require something.. it implies that you NEED to have that in order for it to run.. which in the case of VRAM is just not true. You do not require it.. you recommend it. SRLE does not require that much VRAM to run.. even run smoothly. If you got bad stuttering etc. then it is because you lack elsewhere in your system. I do essentially not have any memory related stutter with 2GB and only SRLE texture load...and on top of that I run at 1440p! Heck if I go down to 1080p I have virtually no issues... other then the fact that it looks bad on my monitor due to stretching. If the user plans on using REGS on top of SRLE + even more asset adding mods then you might start to get up there due to the excessive extra load of new meshes and textures and other stuff... but even then the main limiting factor would go over and be GPU/shadows etc before memory. Anyways my point was just getting a quality MB, and good RAM (More then 8Gb) will mean more(or at the very least the same) and most likely be cheaper then just getting a bigger VRAM model gfx.

2Gb will not "Seriously limit you modding abilities" that is just putting it a bit extremely! In fact it is just plenty unless you absolutely must do 4k screenarcher stuff. Or have 1000x new models with new 2k textures on them on top of what is already in the game. I would always say it is better to get 16Gb of RAM then 1 extra GB of VRAM.. and probably cheaper as well depending on location. Since skyrim + enbhost can easily chew up 8Gb of active RAM use. If you only have 8Gb RAM and 4Gb VRAM then you will still get stuttering issues just like if you had 16 and 2 and did the same load.. the only difference is that one setup is cheaper then the other. That said then more is always better... if you can afford it. But it should not be the most critical part. Also the CPU is still vital for just about any game.. if you get a discount low model then you will suffer compared to a good i5/i7. You do not need to go OC it into super mode since then you have rather diminishing returns, but it will still matter a great deal. And if not for games then for just about any other application you are going to run!

The way I see it with enchantments is that they are soul powered, hence it is a sort of daedric related craft most likely. Hence it is not just like in some other fantasy worlds where enchanting a weapons with flames is a matter of "say magic spell of magic on sword".. you have to actually merge the soul power to the weapon or object in question. I imagine that doing this is a matter of experience for the enchanter.... like any other craft the person has to know how to do it to create something complex. You cannot simply look up the formulae on the internet/book and then do it. I imagine that a description on how to do an enchant would be something like this if it was written down. "When you feel your little finger tingling apply more elemental pressure on the top of the blade, and when you feel a sensation of euphoria make sure to have a soul gem and a new pair of pants ready!" I also guess that it is simply a matter of since it is soul related then everyone feels the process differently hence the only way to learn is to take an existing enchant and work from that. As for the question of "where did the first one come from then"... then I imagine that like I said then it was most likely daedric.. hence some item formed in oblivion where the laws of nature does not exactly apply like everywhere else in the lore. Which leads me to another concept. Perhaps the reason enchanting works like it does is because of how the "real" world is different then planes of oblivion. Which leads to an entirely new mod suggestion... to only being able to craft higher level enchants while in oblivion! Making it a bit more involved to make god like gear then simply taking a stroll down to the local inn and make yet another set of super god like gear! Oh well ranting a bit too much I guess, and deviating from the core question of the thread! Sorry! Hope someone enjoyed reading those few ideas.

Physics.... it works! Just not in Skyrim! :D Anyways jokes aside! Then yeah adding more objects does not make the physics worse...up to a point. More modern games then skyrim still have issues with physics causing all sorts of issues.. from harmless funny bugs, to gamebreaking performance crashing issues. (Who would have thought that eternally bouncing ball was the cause of all those issues!) However just like SMIM and SFO and god knows how many other mods that add more (detailed) models to the game then it all adds up... eventually the engine just have to say stop! So saying that physics problems are "********" is perhaps a bit over the top since all of our installs are different. Ofc any mod on its own in the vanilla game is most likely not going to be the proverbial drop.... until later! Anyways all of that aside then on to trying to make this more awesome! Looking over your list then it seems to me that the amount of firewood is rather... excessive.. as I recall then firewood if you harvest it is what 4 pieces at most ? and it has a weight of what 4 per piece? (sorry if I am outdated on this!) But it just strikes me as one thing that perhaps should be toned down a little bit! In general since there is so MUCH clutter then what you can get from it should also be scaled down in comparison. Perhaps even add a feature of failing to get anything from an item.

Alchemy question - poison effects?
Aiyen replied to kryptopyr's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
I always wondered why oh why it was possible to make power attacks without X amount of stamina. Even with low stamina you can do it and even though you do not get the full damage you still get the ability to stagger them. Which just makes one wonder why stamina is even a thing. Still have not seen a combat mod that actually fix this issue...every single one I have tried still lets me perform a power attack when there is too little stamina instead of forcing a normal attack. As for magicka then I have seen an effect of low magicka on enemy mages.. if they are constantly low on magicka their spell casting will reduce to almost nothing and they are more prone to go into a melee with you. Some mages do however have such an insanely high base regen that it does take poisons as well as lightning spells and other magicka reducing effects to really notice it. -
Random CTD, how to figure out what is wrong
Aiyen replied to minos55's question in General Skyrim LE Support
I normally just follow the roads.. since that way you can easily stay on almost the same track every run. Also there are many many intense and CTD prone spots along the roads. -
Oh I did not take you as hostile at all. It is a nice little debate imo! :) But yeah the problem you seem to describe is the one where you walk in to a room and you got poltergeist action all over.. that will be solved with vsync. The issues I am talking about is just the small things that simply happen because of physics... such as the table with everything jittering all over. Just happens because for some reason the velocity vectors cannot just be 0 across the board. An annoying thing about this is that all the extra calculations because of this actually cost performance! However this happens in just about any game that have physics...infinitely bouncing objects that is. But anyways yes most objects have physics enabled.. but they are also static objects which means that collision will never have any influence on them.. they are essentially just wall extensions put there to break up the monotomy of the level. Once they get altered to be moveable etc then you get all these issues that can happen... they do not have to happen, but they can. And the more objects that collide etc. the more issues you are going to get. And if you have vsync off then even more due to how the physics calculations are frame dependent. Mass is especially weird with collisions.. like the case with the mammoth being sent flying. (In fact when I need a good giggle I normally just do the spawn 20 mammoth and see them go flying since something about their mesh just sends them flying ending up in trees and what not.) https://www.dropbox.com/s/6d8mmhre3bv7kn9/mammothscanfly.jpg Not the best example but they fly, and also as a bonus point sent the dragon corpse flying all over! However all that aside (I actually enjoy the odd physics freakout.. it is mostly just hilarious) then my main issue with the mod was that since all the clutter items serve no purpose then they just got annoying after a while. If in combination with frostfall you could chop a chart into firewood, and smelt down pots n pans etc. then they would have a purpose and perhaps not be as annoying... but moving them around just for the heck of it... well then I personally just prefer statics... less issues overall, and more smooth gameplay! Hope that all came out in a non hostile manner! :)

Random CTD, how to figure out what is wrong
Aiyen replied to minos55's question in General Skyrim LE Support
slowdown with high speed mult is simply because the game is loading assets... many assets. Also you say you CTD... where do you CTD, what where you doing? running about with speedmult 1000 kinda says too little for us to help troubleshoot. (Doing that is in of itself unstable so you should always have multiple speed runs and compare.) on that topic then speedmult 1000 is just pointless.. it is simply too fast. you can skip so many cell grids that you never really get to actually troubleshoot anything... impossible to say if the issue was in grid A or B since you moved to D already. If doing a speed test do the following. from the main menu coc riverwood tgm player.setav speedmult 500 go the following route Riverwood -> falkreath -> markarth -> solitude -> morthal -> winterhold -> windhelm -> riften -> riverwood. Do this up to 5 times starting new games each time. Then make a note of where you CTD... if you can at least get half way then I would generally say the test is a success... unless you ALWAYS CTD in the same spot.. in which case you most likely have some mod conflict or missing data entry etc. -
ini Tweaks help recommendations
Aiyen replied to Drakoktonos's question in General Skyrim LE Support
I am going to have to ask you kindly to learn the fine use of spoiler tags when you post ini´s (Search bbcode spoiler tag on your favorite search engine) As for not having default ones.... simply delete the ones you have and start the game.. default ones will be generated. -
Fireundubh: Yeah my point was not so much that it was a handcart.. more the fact that when you want to pick up something else you end up with situations where you pick up something else. In this particular case then everything in the handcart would drop down and scatter all over the place... in the odd case also killing you due to railgun lettuce heads.. but that can happen! :) As for vsync on or off.. it does not really matter. The more objects that are physics interactable the higher the case for issues.. the table with all the things on is a great example. Even if nobody is moving ANYTHING you can find objects that slightly vibrate, etc since the objects when they first spawned... had a slight height over the mesh. Also my favorite when using realistic force is that a mammoth steps on a mudcrap and gets thrown into the stratosphere.... always look hilarious. These sorts of issues can just happen due to weird collisions between meshes.. and the physics going "divide by zero ... BOOM" Another example is when you have a dead corpse and run into it and damage/kill yourself. Again just because... physics! Guess the overall solution to that would be to edit the objects so they did not have collision boxes but that would probably remove even more from realism.. and most likely make it difficult for them to stay anywhere.

A: you had some ordering issues with bad pointers between mesh and textures... B: You had too little memory and the textures failed to load properly. C: You had bad textures which could not load resulting in black, blue, and/or shiny apparence of objects and actors. D: Something else I am too tired to think of now. Without specific screenshots and a more reproduce able context it is hard to tell which it might be.

You run into an object that before was a static... now it can move hence you could kill yourself running into all sorts of small objects and what else happens when havok goes nuts. Gets even worse when you have multiple objects that collide into each other etc. Also the fact that you would end up picking up EVERYTHING.. my favorite was every time I wanted a lettuce head.. I ended up almost always getting the cart instead... Weird issues about how it can even fit in my pocket aside.. then it was just annoying to the point where I had to remove the mod. I get that it is a nice touch for immersion, but from a gameplay standpoint I can understand why all those small completely irrelevant objects are not setup like this to begin with! :) All that said then nice to see that you wanted to bring the mod back from the dead, and hopefully you can do something with it that will make it better!

Until it has a few more of the features he has on his todo list, I must admit I fail to sort of see the point since automatic variants can already make all dogs look different. But I might just be tired from a long day!
-
The first sounds like the game is still waiting for textures to load... in that case you will see only the super low res LOD textures if any. Waiting a while should let the proper textures load in etc. Other then that then I would have to get a screenshot to be certain what it is. As for the sharpness then hopefully it is since there is sharpen code enabled by default! :) I am not sure what you mean with an FPS gain... ENB should always cost something relative to having it off.

Random CTD, how to figure out what is wrong
Aiyen replied to minos55's question in General Skyrim LE Support
If you got higher ugrids then the first step is always to revert to 5... Also make sure that the problem is not reproduce-able with only STEP mods installed. You can make a profile for each installation and then test by adding mods slowly. Always start a new game when you test out by opening the console and typeing "coc riverwood" from the main menu. If STEP core or extended profiles cause CTD´s then they are either random which can happen but not frequently. Or some part of the guide was not followed to the letter. Hope that helps a little bit. -
Just had a CTD using ENBoost & Memory Patch - Advice?
Aiyen replied to Malachor's question in General Skyrim LE Support
If it is only a single CTD then it could just be skyrim being skyrim.... unless it is a persistent or better yet repeatable issue then it is extremely hard to isolate. So best advice is to simply have multiple saves... I normally have a save when I enter or leave a town after a question and then a save I use while on adventure.. so that I always have a plan B. -
Trying to replace a texture, can't identify it..
Aiyen replied to alocrius's question in General Skyrim LE Support
Unpack the textures.bsa only. And not since terrain is not a model per se then you cannot get the model ID and then find the texture that way. But when you unpack the .bsa then the textures will be in the folders I mentioned. -
Is there a way to not clutter the /Skyrim folder with ENB presets?
Aiyen replied to Halde's question in Post-Processing Support
You can move all files except enblocal.ini and enbseries.ini into the enbseries folder. Keep in mind that if the preset includes SweetFX then you will also need to keep its .dll and settings .txt file in the skyrim dir as well. Many older presets have not done this (Even mine is only pseudo sort of there.. but the next update will have everything in the enbseries folder that can be there.) But it should keep it a bit cleaner. I always recommend to just learn which files are relevant... it is not that many. All the critical ones start with enb in their name. As well as the d3d9.dll and enbhost.exe If you try out something that includes sweetfx then that will be first in the name of its files. I always keep a copy of the more complex presets in a separate folder then I can always cross reference.. it is not like it is loads of extra space.. and then everything is just a copy paste away if I need or want to use it again. Alternatively you can try out the ENB manager mod... which can deal with most files.. however it does have a weird tendency to mess up causing all sorts of weird issues (Mostly due to not actually copying and removing the right files all the time I would guess). Hence I never recommend it. But it works for some. -
FEEDBACK Criticisms against 1.E.2. Display Calibration
Aiyen replied to sgtnapalm's topic in Step Skyrim LE Guide
I have the bigger brother of yours the 2713HM.. it is only about a year old so color degradation have not hit in yet. The only thing I adjusted from my default profile is the overall brightness which due to the distance I am from the monitor and sitting in almost always pitch black was just too intense. So I go away from the super perfect settings under optimal conditions in favor of some that fit my conditions better. But when I did the test it was perfect.. but it was a bit off which I kinda expected. Another thing to consider is that a lot of people mess with the gamma in the options which is just a bad idea since it is silly difficult the get a proper gamma if your monitor is off to begin with and software adjustments are just... not good enough compensation.. you will get washout really easily due to the power nature of gamma. Most cases of people playing with ENB´s who then come and say "Nights/interiors are too dark" it is rather often the case that their gamma was way off, and their contrast as a result suffered immensely.. making everything pitch black. Anyways we are always open to more suggestions on how to improve the guide! I just wanted to mention the fact that it is worth remembering that there is something to be said for not confusing users with too much technical detail.
