Question

Hi!

I'm trying to get the skyrim mod organizer (installed in the skyrim folder) work on a clean installation of Skyrim, but I get this error whenever I try to launch either the SKSE/the game itself: "failed to spawn 'skse_loader.exe'/'TESV.exe': failed to start process (Access is denied. [5]).

(I tried with the 1.2.18 and the 1.3b version, didn't work in either case)

I checked all permissions for the Skyrim folder, disabled my antivirus software, tried to launch the Mod Organizer as Administrator (though I have UAC deactivated (Windows 8.1) so it shouldn't be necessary), I even tried to move Skyrim folder or even the whole Steam folder (thinking that maybe it was related to some weird permissions of the Program Files folder), but it's still not working....

So I was wondering if anyone had any other idea on how to solve this problem? :)

Thank you! :)

If you have not done so already, right-click on the MO.exe select properties, select the compatibility tab, and check "run as administrator". I have windows 7, so in windows 8 things may be different, I don't know.

I tried that, and nope, still not working :/

However, I just managed to make it work by enabling the "Administrator" account, so it's probably a permission problem indeed, but I can't understand why it wouldn't work on my account. I even tried adding "Everyone" with Full control over the Skyrim folder, but it's still not working...

Have you made your account an administrator? Usually Microsoft does like regular users being administrators and warns against it. Like I said, I do not have windows 8.1 so I can not tell you how to do it. But google is your friend.

As you are figuring out this is most likely an issue with your permissions, but I'd like you to clarify something for me.

  • The error message is generated by MO?
  • It is found in the MO logs?
  • Are you having that issue when you start the game+SKSE from a shortcut?

Windows 8 UAC is messed up. You may have set it to Never Notify, but it will still require you to run as administrator. There is not advantage to setting it to never notify in Windows 8.

To fix, right-click the Skyrim folder and select Properties. Go to Security and select Edit... Highlight the Users account and check Full Control. Then hit Apply and wait for that to finish (apply to all files and folders). That should fix it.

I'm having this problem to. I tried to run  the creation kit or FNIS and it gives me an access  error. I've tried resetting the permissions to give everybody access and make sure I have an administrator account but still I get the same frustrating  error. It's got something to do with Windows 8.1

I had the same thing with win 10 to
You have to check the inherit for sub folders and files.
I'll screen cap my setting in a few

EDIT:

I just entered some settings till something worked so, I am not responsible for anything that you do.

Welcome to STEP @janissaire.

Sorry, I'm having a hard time reading your post.

If English isn't your first language try using Google Translate or just post in your native tongue and we can translate it.

The descriptions of your settings are... very limited, and I'm even having a hard time reading if you are offering a fix or in need of one!

Which version of MO is this for?

I have found a solution! At least for me. The default location for MO to run SKSE was from the MO folder, not the skyrim folder. So it was looking for something that wasn't there. I typed in the correct path to my Skyrim folder and now it's all good. I had been looking for this for about 4 hours... nothing was online, lol. Thought someone should post something
