Hi guys,
I'm playing Fallout 4 with a lot of mods I installed afterthe STEP V1.0 guide for Fallout 4. I also installed some additional mods, but they don't really conflict to the STEP project. I am Playing on BethINI ultra settings and limited my FPS to 100 via high fps physic fix.

At start, everything felt buttery smooth and I had no issues whatsoever. At some point tho (i do not know what I might have done to cause this), the camera started to have very slight jitter. For some this might not even be noticeable, but me personally it's driving me crazy. I tried to fiddle around with various full/borderless window screen setting, as well as different FPS limits and VSync. nothing seems to fix the jitter.

I even filmed a video of the issue, but i don't know where i could upload it to show you. maybe you can recommend a site?

Does anyone have an idea what's going on and what I could do to fix this? Thanks in advance!

my specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
RAM: 32 GB DDR5 6200MHz
SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB

YouTube is typically best for videos.

It sounds like perhaps a driver update changed your graphics settings. I think you are right about it being VSync related. Another one to look into would be Shadow Boost's settings.

i would need to upload the video with 120 FPS to really show the issue, since it will be much harder to spot if the already recorded video gets downgraded. i will try to record one video with 60fps where the issue is still well visible

i don't think it's vsync related. i tried those settings (and also restarted the game for every change):

  • vsync via BethINI on
  • vsync via BethINI off, via driver on (both normal and AMD enhanced sync)
  • vsync via BethINI off, via high fps physics fix on
  • completely off, via high fps physics fix "allow tearing = true"

As far as I can tell, all the settings work "as intended". If any kind of VSync was active, there was no screen tearing at all. as soon as i went completely off,  I didn't even notice the jitter anymore because the screen was tearing so much it's unbearable.

I have my graphic driver updates on manual and I definitely did not install an update in the timespan the jittering started. infact, i didn't update since the driver update for horizon forbidden west was released.

I don't even use shadow boost since I'm getting overall good fps even with ultra settings and 8000 draw distance (very rarely it dips into the 90s). But i did fiddle around with the settings a bit, and it still didn't change anything. :/

It's also definitely not resource cost related, since the jitter stays perfectly consistent everywhere I go. interior, exterior, high demand areas, low demand areas, doesn't matter.

Its also not TAA related. I tried with TAA and FXAA, the issue still persists.

Also the FPS and frametime is perfectly stable almost all the time, absolutely no hitches or anything. AMD drivers don't report any microstutters at all either.

EDIT:

I uploaded a short clip of the issue on youtube. While youtube compression makes the issue look way worse than it is, it's still very visible how unsmooth it feels (even tho it was recorded in 120 fps and is available in 60 fps on youtube). This was recorded with vsync and TAA on, and while you can definitely see the jitter, there's no screen tearing at all.

please don't mind the dude talking in the video, it's another video i played while trying to resolve the issue. i forgot to cut the audio. :D

Hmmm... I'm not seeing it in the video. I've watched it several times and not really making it out. So two ideas. One is that you should test Bethini High preset and see if the situation improves. However, the fact you say the frametime and fps are perfectly stable, no hitches or microstutters, combined with the fact that I can't see it in the video, makes me think that perhaps your monitor settings may need to be adjusted.

Do you think you see anything similar in my video?

To be honest, yes I do. Could be youtube, but it doesn't look that smooth on your side aswell

funnily i was able to resolve the issue. i disabled any kind of vsync and then forced the game to use freesync (i have a freesync monitor)

now its buttery smooth. seems like this game doesn't like vsync at all. bethesda games always had their issues with that....

anyway, i guess this case is closed lol. forced freesync fixed my issue.

i made a clip of the resolved issue. i had to film it with my smartphone tho since my driver recording introduced the jitter again.

just watch my two videos next to each other, you should be able to spot the difference

I get that, and I think we're both sensitive to how it looks when frames go missing. I have a Gsync monitor, so yeah, you want to make sure you use that feature as much as possible. It can be a pain to set up sometimes, but I always know when it isn't working.

Our System Setup Guide goes into some detail about setting up G-SYNC and Freesync as well as monitor calibration.

Your GPU and monitor work together to utilize G-SYNC/Freesync. The game doesn't know anything about it. As a result, Vsync and frame caps are unnecessary.
