I just started my playthrough using the STEP guide (full guide), and for some reason Hilde looks really young:

Did I do something wrong with the guide? I have no custom mods, just followed the guide exactly with all recommended options, hidden files and FOMOD installer options.

There are some options for Tempered Skins for Females and possibly Consistent Older People, but you can check what her records are using More Informative Console (Install in Resources section or Extenders). Then you can find that in xEdit to see what may be altering her head. I'm not as familiar with the TES characters as most around here.

The only thing that seems to alter her is USSEP and AI Overhaul. So it's not a plugin, but a general texture causing trouble.

I tried reinstalling Consistent Older People and Tempered Skins for Females, using the Step FOMOD instructions but neither did anything

I fixed the issue: It's indeed the Tempered Skin Female mod.

The way to fix this is doing this:

The femalehead texture is the culprit, but I reckon the body should also be disabled in this case (for consistency). I kinda like the result.

Hiding these 2 files makes Hilde look older again:

Thanks for confirming. Since I am not as familiar with the characters of Skyrim, I can't speak to this sort of issue happening to other characters. My thought is to revisit the TSfF FOMOD and choose different options to see if that resolves. Then it will at least apply to all characters that should look old.

Let's see what @Greg or @TechAngel85 have to say about this example and determine if this is a general thing with this mod or just an exception (in which case, your fix is probably best). They know the characters far better than me ... I have modded Skyrim like crazy, but I have never taken the opportunity to get to Skyrim lore. I always get hung up on modding, process, and guide editing. I will play it once I have finished modding it (so maybe never).

It's strange since I use the recommended FOMOD instructions. Like I said, I even reinstalled the mod to see if I accidentally chose the wrong option, but that's not the case here. The mod is also in the right position I believe. The CSV export in the OP should confirm that (copy paste it in Excel/Google Spreadsheets to make it more readable).

But just to make sure I didn't install any of the lower mods wrong: These are the only file conflicts the mod has, this is hopefully correct right? Because I don't see which other mod could potentially overwrite the femaleoldhead textures.

It's just a little strange, because this seems like it's not a really easy oversight. This mod makes all the female NPC's which use "/femaleold/femalehead_msn.dds" have rather young faces. I tested this out by starting a new save and spawning a bunch of female Elders (player.placeatme) in: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Elder

I'm saying to try deviating from the guide instructions for that mod to get older faces/bodies if possible and determine if that resolves rather than making custom changes by hiding assets.

It looks as if the femaleold textures are included as common files regardless of the body type selected, although both are wrinkled tintmasks so she should have a wrinkled appearance. I'll poke around tonight to see if the tintmask is applied in my game. I'm curious to see if a plugin may be altering the character appearance record.

It seems that enabling/disabling indeed doesn't really do much. It really depends on the lighting. The wrinkles are way too subtle, even without the tintmasks.

It must be a generic record that lots of elder NPC's use because the NPC's themselves aren't being altered by anything except AI Overhaul (which only adds some AI Packages and inherited an USSEP change) and USSEP. I'm poking around in SSEEdit right now to see if there are any references to other edited records in Hilde's records that more Elders are using.

It's just the textures from that mod. The old female textures are also likely installed by default, regardless of options. I've never really paid it any attention, to be honest. They're still old looking, not aged better I suppose. You have to get closer to see their wrinkly faces. You can likely just hide the textures and it'll be okay (testing for neck seams, etc). Those older females will simply not have the higher quality textures. Also seem a few other users have noted old females not looking old on Nexus. The author (nor anyone else) replied to those posts.

Agree that there are no apparent 'old' people in Skyrim anymore. Seems like another issue to resolve ... eventually.

People evidently don't enjoy making textures for 'old' skin or skeletons for 'old' people. Looting an old person still results in a young body, even with Consistent Older People installed. Always bothered me.

Here is a candidate for at least getting higher res textures for the older skins:

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/30236

Problems:

  • Only for females
  • the retex turns old people into much younger-looking people
  • Skyrim got 40-50 yr people way too old (this mod makes them look a little too young, but more realistic)

Also ...

  • Skyrim needs 60-100 yr-old people with bodies to match heads and quality textures
  • Old people are just not appreciated by the mod creators it seems, since almost nobody works on this stuff (need to check LE textures though)

It really seems to depend on how their faces are lighted too.

That mod imo makes their faces look way too "High Fantasy/JRPG"-like, Skyrim is nowhere near that in terms of art style.

You could always try putting the default skyrim SE textures into an upscaler, maybe that makes their vanilla faces look better, without deviating from art style.
