MO 2.07 - Can´t start FO 4 with profile using no mods - crash after "press any button..."

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi forum users!

I really hope you can help me with this. I´ve been working on setting up a pretty heavily modded game using MO 2 and following this guide:

https://wiki.step-project.com/User:Kesta/FO4PersonnalGuide

I skipped some mods there and added some others.

As for basic tools and utilities I followed the first part of the linked guide which means I use:

F4SE.exe

LOOT

I also use a SweetFX Preset Version: K-putt's_Fallout_ReShade_1.5 'Performance'-58-1-5

Since I had been modding the game slightly using a few mods last year and only came back after a break from FO 4 I then skipped to using MO 2  (about 2 weeks ago) and for that I deleted all the mods (6 or so) in NMM, then installed MO 2. Before that I manually cleaned out the Fallout 4 Steamfolder (Data and the Game folder) since I reinstalled all utility programs new.

In MO2 I configured a profile called after my main character "Norruto" and installed the same mods I had in NMM.

I configured the profile with "local savegames" and copied the character Norruto and alls his saves to it.

After that was done i tried if everything worked fine and only then started to add more mods following above linked guide.

Everything worked fine. I start the game using F4SE.exe in MO2 after using Loot. The Reshade Version is shown, the game starts and I can load my savegames and play.

Then I added the mods from the guide, and some others. Everything works fine still as long as I use the Norruto Profile and start the game through MO2 using F4SE.exe.

But then I wanted to see again what the default game looks like if I use no mods but the official DLC.

So I copied the Default Profile in MO2 named it "NoMod_Profile" and copied the first savegame from the Default Profile to this profile after setting it to "local savegames".

The Problem is: Every time i start the game using this profile and F4SE.exe the game crashes the instant it says "press any button to start".

I checked all the files in the profile folder and everything seems fine, modlist, loadorder, I even ran loot only for the official DLC files which are all checked in the plugins tab.

Maybe it has sth to do with profiles?

The Profile "NoMod_Profile" now has no characters listed in the upper right field saying "Character for profile "NoMod_Profile" and below in the lower right corner it says

"Save1_75FA7CBC__SanctuaryHillsWorld_000133_20151115005318_1_2"

Also under global characters it lists no character (since my only character is assigned to the Norruto Profile) and also just lists the same first savegame here.

In the profile "NoMod_Profile" no mods are checked on the left side in MO and on the right side all official esm´s are checked.

I also tried using the ini files from the Norruto - Profile for the "NoMod_Profile", still it crashes at the same time.

I´d really like to be able to start the game without any mods and the load specific savegames from the norruto playthrough to check what the game would look without mods. Or at least I´d like to start the game using no mods and then create a new character. Maybe the first save I list above is the one right before character creation, so that would jump right to that point if the game would start up.

I also crashed if I use the officials launcher alone or click on the F4SE.exe in the game folder.

I already went to the Appdata Folder and deleted all the stuff in there since there were still some old plugin.txt files and stuff there.

Any help is appreciated. I guess I can´t have messed sth. serious (in the steam folders or sth.) since using MO 2 everything mod related is handled "externally" through MO. Also I have backups of my ini files and my savegames. Just how do I start the game with no mods and get to create a new character (using MO2 preferably)?

Thanks for reading and greetings, Altaya

ModOrganizer 2.0.7 beta 3 reported issues with save game profiles does not seem to be working ATM and if anyone has it working they are being all quite about it ;) NOTE: You can use profiles to have a no mode one with nothing selected (i Do and it works) you just see all the saved games. I just rename them so I know what is what atm.

F4SE Plugins may be the issue (Achievement Mod, Looks menu plugin etc) People have reported even if mods/plugins are disabled they seem to stay active. >>Link<<

MO2 seems to use the My Documents\My Game ini files. With my fiddling I have not seen any affect in changing MO2 ini files to local ones.(please correct me wrong or I'm not doing it right)

I would focus on making it work from steam 1st before anything else.

-You  using release version of FO4 (Cannot use the BETA)

-Install ENB Manager https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9838/? Use it to backup your current ENB Profile then delete all emb and shader presets with the Big REMOVE button.

-Is F4SE ver 1.6.9 always needs to be updated.

check that there is no \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data\F4SE if you have a F4SE folder in there back it up and delete check content of folder to see what mods used it i.e. \F4SE\Plugins\achievements.dll

See if the game starts (From steam then F4SE then MO2)

if so re-enable enb presets try again

Hope this helps

I´ll give your suggestions a try this evening. Just wnated to reply concerning Ini-Files.

I ilke to use the Fallout Configurator Tool and  made it so I can start it in MO2. But using it the tool still only changes the inis in the folder:

C:\Users\Use\Documents\my games\Fallout4

I checked this making changes and saving it to the inis and then checking the "changed date" on the files. The inis in the MO Profile Folder were unchanged only the one in above folder were changed.

I just copied the ones from the my games folder to the profile in case those were used for the game starting it through MO2.

No I don't think they are in-use/working in MO2

BUT the actual file that should be modified with the edits is Fallout4Custom.ini

Both Fallout4.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini SHOULD be left alone. After they have been they have been "orginized" with fINIp

I have not seen a Fallout Configuration Tool that does this way, they all seem to do it the OLD original way.

As an example my

fallout4.ini has sResourceDataDirsFinal=

and

Fallout4Custom.ini has sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\, TEXTURES\, MUSIC\, SOUND\, INTERFACE\, MESHES\, PROGRAMS\, MATERIALS\, LODSETTINGS\, VIS\, MISC\, SCRIPTS\, SHADERSFX\

I had to do it this way as my Really Red Rocket by Elinora, textures would not show.

I have not seen much talk about it...

Oh and if you have bEnableFileSelection=1  in your Fallout4Prefs.ini it's not a thing anymore remove it. Can also cause crashes.

Ok, I got everything working again but I still cant say for sure what the cause of the crash was.

I started by removing the folder

\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data\F4SE\

which had some logfiles and the achievement file in it and then backed up my Sweet FX config using the ENB Manager (which I didn´t know about, thanks for the tip!) (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9838/?). I thought that MO2 would not install anything directly into the "data" folder so this was a surprise for me.

Then I went to install newest LOOT Version after uninstalling old one. The new one still crashes though, sadly, when using MO2 to start it but before it crashes on closing and before the crash it sorts everything fine. (I am using MO2 portable install on my games drive and LOOT as an installed program (also not on "c:" but on my games drive).

F4SE version was latest as was MO2 Version so I did nothing there.

I then started MO2 and (just to be sure ;)  ) deinstalled the Looks Mod and the "Achievements" Mod from my Modded profile.

After that it still didn´t work, neither through launcher, normal exe nor F4SE.exe.

I then removed all loose files in the game folder, not the folders themselves, checked again that only official files were in the data folder and then did a "validate files" in steam. After redownloading the files for the gamefolder the game started up fine again.

The interesting thing: I backed up the loose file from my gamefolder (for reference) with which starting the game always crashed and there is no difference in the available files compared to what I no have after reinstalling everything. Both folders have the same named files in it.

(I already reinstalled the ENB, shadowboost, F4SE and the creation kit so I have the exact same state I had before revalidating files).

Starting the game also works if I use MO2 and the profile with no mods selected.

I will have to remove the ini tweak "bEnableFileSelection=1" since I still have it active.

A question concerning the inis: Will only the custom.ini be used if its present or are both used? Right now I have changes in both inis and for example the entry

fallout4.ini has sResourceDataDirsFinal= [...]

is only inside my fallout4.ini and not in the custom.ini. Some changes seem to be written to both inis by the Fallout 4 Configurator Tool.

Just a quick and so I hope final question for the time beeing until MO is hopefully updated:

What do I do in the fallout4custom.ini concerning this:

Should I set

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

OR

sResourceDataDirsFinal=

to
sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\, TEXTURES\, MUSIC\, SOUND\, INTERFACE\, MESHES\, PROGRAMS\, MATERIALS\, LODSETTINGS\, VIS\, MISC\, SCRIPTS\, SHADERSFX\

The above option is said (Tooltip in Fallout 4 Configurator) to overwrite the settings for the second entry.

Thanks, Altaya

I do not use a Fallout Configuration Tool, and I do not recommend it if you fINIp.

If you "validate files" in steam it replaced both Fallout4.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini the Fallout4Custom.ini stays the same.

My recommended setup

Backup your Fallout4.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini

run fINIp4 follow the instructions, it's easy.

Check Fallout4Custom.ini has the following lines

[Archive]

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

sResourceDataDirsFinal=

I personally use

sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\, TEXTURES\, MUSIC\, SOUND\, INTERFACE\, MESHES\, PROGRAMS\, MATERIALS\, LODSETTINGS\, VIS\, MISC\, SCRIPTS\, SHADERSFX\

The reason for this is that I was not seeing all loose files in mods so some textures were missing and found this resolved that problem. It may be a placebo but It works for me.

IF you use a Fallout Configuration Tool at this point, it will chance settings in the default ini files if you have the same setting in your Fallout4Custom.ini the changes will do nothing.

Fallout4Custom.ini is > ALL

Note: ENB Manager, ENB's are getting more and more complex

e.g. VOGUE ENB uses a LUT's folder in \Data\textures\effects\LUTs if you want to BACKUP these Newer ENB's you need to click files in the top right of ENB Manager, click files and add Data\textures\effects\LUTs to the bottom of the list that pops up.

ENB Manager will ONLY Backup files in that list if you use and exotic ENB with odd files make sure you add the folders( and files if in the root directory) it needs to backup.
