  1. Here are my permissions. These are a bit screwy, and I will be reconfiguring this permission structure!: My TESV remains untouched Win 7 64 latest updates And my reset permissions moving forward. Will advise if there are any changes with TESV, but I suspect there will not be ...
  2. Great findings MW25. Very useful to know. Could you isolate and tell us which textures are accounting for those trees and that snow? I will guess that it is SRO stuff, as Starac has already mentioned that his textures are custom and optimized using his own methods (so his textures may be an exception). Either way, I'd like Ethatron to be able to identify what is happening wit those so that he can weigh in. My guess is that the alpha and contrast compensations are sort of double dipping on what Starac may have already accomplished. Thanks for the additional testing! NOTE: that the FPS gains I expect will pertain to ultra-high settings only. I did not see much gain either with high settings as recommended by STEP.
  3. @ MW25 and Beald (& All) First, I think that you both would appreciate arguments laid out long ago by Hardin's (an ecologist) "Tragedy of the Commons". As far as neuroscience and human behavior, I basically agree with all of these hypotheses. More simply put though, we are all victims of our biology, and if you are a rational-minded person and subscribe to the tennets of evolutionary theory, then you will recognize that neurology essentially governs all aspects of behavior and that we are a condensed reflection of our cummulative ancestral brain chemistry dating back to the ganglionic masses of jellyfish ;) Competition for resources and the struggle to pass on one's traits to their grandchildren drives all life, and this, by way of the Medula Oblongata is the root of greed. Animals will be animals after all, no matter where they exist on the food chain ...
  4. Don't process any already processed is fine, that simply tells DDSopt to ignore any already processed files it may have previously touched If you have it checked, it just skips files that will effectively not get any additional changes. Don't process HDR is another matter. I am not sure what the algorithm is for that, but i assume that any image with high contrast is left alon by default, and I also am not sure which ones Ethatrons is filtering out with that option... I would reprocess though checking both boxes this time. It should go fast. Also, note what water textures should not be processed and add them to the ini file along with the other water textures in there. DDSopt will handle them properly if you add them to the INI
  5. you are remembering my issue with setting up a symlink and this key: HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim I did not have it then because I had not run Skyrim from the launcher yet I have it now ;) Neither CK nor Skyrim start up that service. it is also set to manual ... just never runs. It is also not my ESET antivirus. Incidentally, even after deleting my INIs, I am still always prompted by the options whenever I use the launcher. I think the service non-start and this behavior are connected.
  6. My Steam Client Service is stopped, and does not start when I bring up the CK or verify cache for CK. My CK is 1.6.89 and I am still stable with TESV v1.5.26. I'll keep an eye on this, but I just don't believe the lot of you
  7. Then I'm at a complete loss. Both Steam and the launcher run with your credentials. How it is disappearing in this case is baffling. Doing some additional testing. You might want to pick up a copy of Win8 then, who knows what those MS chumps stuck in that OS ...
  8. No, I do not have deny set for any user, including my account Good to have confirmation that neither I nor my box is insane :P I'll just delete my INIs then....
  9. A perfect example of why it pays nicely to put time in up front and follow the Wrye Bash wiki guide and use that to maintain STEP. Reverting to vanill a and starting over would all be a trivial issue :)
  10. woops, sounds like someone served up the next beta by mistake
  11. Good to know. I'd be interested in the performance diff on your rig with regard to both VRAM and FPS if you have the time. See the DDSopt guide performance section for a proposed best practice... I also posted it on this thread somewhere I think. It may have also found its way into ME25s notes on mod testing too. I would add to it that you should test using ultra settings and include some areas with a lot of foliage (Riften aspens and pines of Riverwood are good examples). EDIT: Found the post I refer to above
  12. Sounds like you have a problem related to the compression algorithm. Do you have similar issues when compressing large amounts of data in other ways? Try optimizing to loose files and then compressing to BSA in a second step. Also, be certain that you are using the 8.0 pre release III (that things is smokin fast!)
  13. These are too gaudy and unrealistic for my tastes. Potions/poisons should be much smaller and in either clear or opaque, nondescript containers with labels in some cases, mostly handwritten or iconic IMO. I am waiting for someone to produce a smaller potions/poisons mod. My character is tired of the weighty clanking of those huge bottles and flagons :P
  14. I disagree, the W.A.T.E.R implementation is an animated water texture / nif, this changes it to actual water instead. You can see the difference in the screenshots compared to WATER.That being the case, you can actually drop items into the water now and it has a proper collision model. That is nice... and something that I would have expected a mod called "Water" to appropriately address :P
  15. do you get the cursor after the main menu if you are able to use the KB to get into the submenus? You have a problem with one of the interface mods, so uninstall each, one by one until it is fixed and try to figure out why the culprit is misbehaving. It could also be a driver issue in conjunction with the rotating Skyrim mod.
  16. With the new version, you shouldn't need to ignore anything but the PNG files in the interface/books directory. I think all fixes have been implemented in the Pre release. The only one I am unsure about is hotiron01. I assume that the issue was related to another texture. I would say run it without ignoring and report back if any of those textures has any of the old problems. Ethatron would probably like that confirmation, and you can always replace those with the vanilla after the fact if he missed something.
  17. @MW25: Use the settings in this post ;)
  18. = 0 for me (I have SU 1.4 set to disable updates and have for awhile now) My launcher has full admin rights under my user account. Yes indeed' date=' always.
  19. good points all, particularly skwareballz..... The distinction between capitalism and corporatism is an important one; however, it is likely that the latter is an inevitable evolution of the former, since capitalism cannot really be held in check and social disparity is an inevitable result. More important are indeed the oceans --the densest proportion of our atmosphere and making up over 70% of the Earth's surface. It also houses the most biodiversity and is the ultimate source --and resource-- of life on Earth. The key there is ultimately the food chain beginning with various forms of plankton, which we are effectively destroying, at least in terms of biodiversity ... plenty of algae to go around though *ahem*. The human race is not going anywhere, but we are on the brink of a massive natural culling to be sure, governed by limited natural resources that should never have been tapped (i.e., oil). Think of it as a self-stabilizing process that is ultimately good for all life on Earth, including humanity In the meantime, I think that we are in the twilight of humanity's "golden age" and it is a good time to be alive, so we should really enjoy it while it lasts
  20. thanks for the info, Fri. @all FYI RE the Clean Data option
  21. If you are the OP you can also go to the OP, Click Edit > Full and change the subject and even the thread tag.
  22. if you are admin and run something wo UAC enabled, then you would be running as admin by default.... I use SU and have system restore active on my game drive. Steam can't touch me
  23. Note that LOD bias is something that Ethatron is essentially addressing in his new pre release of DDSopt. Essentially, he is implementing a correction of foliage mipmaps, by degrees, with increasing mipmap levels, improving contrast and lightening textures at higher levels to offset alpha-test aliasing artifacts (Skyrim uses "alpha test" method in alpha-texture super-sampling ) ... read on on that thread for some pretty cool info on latest DDSopt pre and potential impact.
  24. Right? It's like the beta is a warning "we will be updating your Skyrim in the very near future, so if you don't like that, well, get to work!"
  25. ATM, I mean, it is a useless ('forced') update. It would be nice if they held their updates in beta for at least a month or two prior to release; however, they always jump the gun and force it out too soon.
