Yet Another Skyrim Hardcore mod - YASH, by dAb. This mod is an overhaul that is highly underrated. Some of the top modders around were contributors in some fashion. It is very lore friendly and works very well. You do not need a large number of gameplay mods if you run this and it can be installed in a modular fashion or via 2 .esp files. It deals with just about everything and feels like part of the original game - BUT much harder. Thinking and planning go a long way towards making this work.

Not a CORE STEP mod but as a package installing this along with Alternate Start - Live Another Life, ASIS, Frostfall, Immersive Armors, Immersive Creatures, Immersive Weapons, Run For Your Lives, Wet And Cold and When Vampires Attack as your gameplay section and you have quite a challenge on your hands. This is true of both STEP and SR. Of course other overhauls included in SR such as Deadly Dragons, Realistic Needs and Diseases and SkyTest would need to be looked at and or removed.

Anyway though I have mentioned this mod before in passing as it were, I am still very stunned at how little notice this mod is getting.

Please consider and enjoy.

as great as it may or may not be, mods that are considered to be gameplay overhauls of skyrim typically have no place in STEP. Unless my interpretation of the STEP mandate is incorrect... but im pretty sure that's the case. Im sure one of the admins will confirm or deny this

Definitely not for CORE STEP but is a good idea for a package as I stated. Especially useful for those who want a more challenging game but with a vanilla feel - and by extention the closest overhaul to the STEP mandate.

This changes about as much as Requiem does in terms of how much it touches in the game and somewhat more than SkyRe does. But it does so unobtrusively with lots of nice touches. AI across the board is much smarter, dragons much harder, combat trickier especially as monsters will now chase you outside.

Not for everybody but definitely worthy of far more attention than it has received.

It can be used in a modular fashion as described below. All seem to work very well and a useful combination can be achieved with a little work. Of course some of the esp files render some other mods in either STEP or SR obsolete.

The author seems very keen to keep as close to vanilla as possible. I for one am very keen on the un-levelled skyrim approach as it makes no real sense that all npc's monsters etc.. are the same level as you or lower, and that merchants stock as well as various treasure items increase in quality and value as you increase in levels. There is almost no real incentive to train your skills and level up. Of course in a general gameplay sense the vanilla approach makes sense - but then this game was made for consoles. It is supposed to be an RPG but the vanilla game pretty much leaves out the role playing element as well as any real need to learn strategy to solve difficult combat situations. Which is a lot more fun than running into any given dungeon waving a sword about, killing everything in sight and grabbing all the treasure - which is pretty much the case with vanilla.

So if one used this (or perhaps other unleveled) mods, which mods should not be used alongside it? For example I assume something like High Level Enemies would not work with it. What about NPC/Creature mods like SkyTest, Skyrim Immersive Creatures? What about something like Timing is Everything?

Or perhaps a simpler way of addressing this issue is what other gameplay mods do you use alongside this?

The general rule of thumb is that texture, animation, and weather / lighting packs OK. Everything else needs to be checked. The recommended mods are shown in the first post the rest is decided by considering what this mod does affect and what it doesn't.

Here is modlist.

And the load order.

This particular configuration has not been fully tested yet but seems to be working well so far. I hope this helps to answer your question.

My latest playthru, I struggled between using this mod or Skyrim Unleashed. Ended up picked the latter because that mod even though very similar in scope works fine with SkyRe's perk changes which I would miss very much. I use ASIS too. I also liked the changes at low levels in Skyrim Unleash to make the beginning of the game less painful, less aggro from powerful bandits who see you as too weak and poor to attack and less aggro from wildlife. That mod also messes big time with the level lists but doesn't mess with the scaling with the player much. meaning it retains the ability for the player to explore where ever he wants, but need to know that some previously easy kills like draugrs are now a lot tougher, but a draugr is still a draugr.

Otherwise this would've been a fine choice as well. Maybe my next play through.

Aside: If someone can tell me how to use Lootification I would be very happy. I was planning to spread enchants to Immersive weapons & armor but just can't get lootification to work. I keep getting errors saying such and such "armorbladewhatever" is invalid and needs cleaning with TesVedit. But I don't know what's wrong though.
