z929669 Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 Agree. Normals can sometimes be a huge factor, and they usually are not compatible with different diffuse. So context (surrounding textures/objects, lighting, mesh effects, etc. in game) is required to make judgements, which means only looking at differences in game are valid comparisons.

The normal often provides all the detail. If memory serves, vanilla is brighter in-game and it's quite a blurry mess. SRO is more noisy, which is more appropriate for a rock texture because solidness in color create bland, flatness on rocks. SRO doesn't have as many lichen spots, but the ones it does have are more detailed (some of vanilla's looks like bird poo ). Wow. I never gave much thought to normals, only considered the diffuse because it's the purdy one. Anyway, because I was curious, here's all the configurations in-game: Spoiler Vanilla SRO Vanilla diffuse + SRO normal SRO diffuse + Vanilla normal
Greg Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 Vanilla looks more like plastic to me and I think it clearly demonstrates why we prefer SRO. I think the last two screenshots clearly demonstrate that vanilla parts and SRO parts don't mix well.

Fine detail, and best quality, IMO. The vanilla normal is not so good.
