  2. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be legal to modify Bethesda's DLC and redistribute it.
  3. Our current systems, still based on a Prussian pseudo-religious model of training people to tolerate bordom and follow orders, in preparation for the workforce, needs to go the way of the Dodo as soon as possible.
  4. I fear it....
  5. I did some teaching with the VSO, and you'd be a foolish teacher not to plan for the low-aptitude people. I caught one kid eating his text book at the back of the class (I'm not being callous - he wasn't hungry, but chewing it up to make spitballs!) But though the book-eaters are a significant minority, I can say that based on my experience they are vastly outnumbered by capable students, desperate for education, but forced into a life of drudgery through poverty. When it comes to the power of education, I am a hopeless optimist(!), and I like to think that a more educated world could lead to more prosperous and civilised societies, where the less-able will also fare much better. A great illustration of what these projects could achieve is William Kamkwamba. When I say that reading about these examples, and the strong growth of these projects, are some of my favourite things, I'm not kidding. Reading this stuff puts me in a good mood for the rest of the day. Also, I think that if these schemes want to achieve the widest reach, they should look at implementations that can run well on cell phones. Cell phones have achieved tremendous penetration in the developing world , and the transceiver network is surprisingly well-developed in many places. PCs with internet connection are of course a relative rarity, but that is also improving rapidly.
  6. I think most of the team here is already committed to a ton of other tasks. You could maybe see if the larger audience on the Nexus would like to help?
  7. Some of the simple tweaks, like the FOV settings, do work, but are already well known. It might be good to add things like that to the wiki. The 'fixes' that involve resolving crashes by running in compatibility mode and such like, sound a bit tenuous. As you say, we can't really test them.
  8. Hmm. Activates maximum scepticism mode This looks like a lot of rehashed and speculative information, pasted up to get hits for their commercial junk. I have a lot more faith in the Z-fighting tweaks you've developed with your own patient testing.
  9. Good find Ivan, and another from Beald! Completely agree that the vanilla soundtrack is superb, but that adding more quality tracks for variety has got to be a win. I wonder how TC views this. Personally, I think that adding (not replacing) more quality music seems like a natural aesthetic improvement for inclusion in STEP. EDIT: IMHO, I'm not totally convinced that this electronic style meshes nicely with the vanilla score.
  10. If he succeeds in bringing plagues to Skyrim, I will personally create a mod of Eric Idle walking around shouting, "Bring out yer dead!" But as you say, when you start to think about it, the implications of this and many other ideas would require a daunting amount of work. I would break it into modules, and work on it one piece at a time. I share your concern that this could float around in a perpetual state of partial completion.
  11. There's a new thread for this now, and I think it's worth discussing further. We don't have much evidence that TES5Edit is still being developed.
  12. The spreadsheet was the sort of quick and dirty interim solution I was thinking about. With a bit of spreadsheet voodoo, I would think that comparing the two sheets would be fairly easy. It's not something I've looked at yet - what would be the process for dumping the edits from the esp? I'll start a new thread for this.
  13. The lizard man Arthmoor makes a very fine mod. +1 to this. @TC I notice that you have been frustrated by conflict checking a few times now. This seems like something quite fundamental to the project that we have not addressed. Would you like the team to investigate solutions? EDIT: It seems that TES5Edit will not be forthcoming for the foreseeable future. From Elminster: "I would love to create a TES5Edit, there are no technical reasons why I couldn't. My main problem is available spare time. It takes a large amount of effort and time to properly reverse engineer the file format and create an appropriate record description in source code." EDIT: It also seems that this respectable team believe he is working on it, stealthily: https://www.darkcreations.org/forums/topic/1218-replacement-for-tes4edit-or-seeing-the-changed-records/
  14. Yes, the more rigorous testing, the better. I just wouldn't want visitors to get the wrong idea about the significance of the benchmark. I might suggest we move it to the non-step related forum.
  15. Bear in mind that this benchmark was only intended to help ENB Boris to work out bottlenecks in ENB performance. It may not be very relevant to general Skyrim performance, or STEP.
  16. :) As the song says, "These are a few of my favourite things!" I think there's even a good case for putting these in the wiki, under resources for people who would like to learn more about computer science and development. And everything else under the sun!
  17. Excellent work. That's a great resource for the whole community. Kudos, Sir.
  18. Cheers for that list, Blacksol. I'm big on hiking, and I have to be prevented from entering Camping stores, or I WILL emerge with some new tools and/or 'technical clothing'. I can vouch for the double-hooder!
  19. Here is an interesting article I read a while ago, tangentially related. Hardly a fair practice to report both sides of a debate to suit one's argument, but some interesting points, nonetheless.
  20. Yes, that's the normal behaviour of the engine. It is a bit shoddy, but as Torminater says, I wouldn't expect to see a fix for that.
  21. Great review! I like this sort of thing - reduces the homogeneity of the world, which is one of the sins of Bethsoft games, IMHO.
  22. If anyone spots a good real estate deal on a nice new planet, do let me know.
  23. I think you're right, and in the longer term the definition of a PC will be looser. My only criterion is that it is a "Personal Computer", and not "A computer that you ostensibly own, but are permitted to use only under the conditions set by Corporation X" With regard to the future of the planet(!), I'm not pessimistic about the survival of the species, as such. But the evolution of species, and civilisations, tends to be rather bloody and chaotic. I think those of us that have known life in the post-war developed nations have become accustomed to a very privileged period of stability and plenty, and we may imagine that , by and large, that is how things will continue. Looking the trends of population, energy supply, resources and climate change, I fear there will be some of what economists so innocuously describe as "corrections", and I don't think it's going to be too comfy.
  24. LOL. Yes, I avoided these mods for a long time, thinking they would fill Whiterun with hentai in suspenders. This series is well made, but not to my personal taste. I prefer my medieval palette closer to this: [video=youtube]
