Skyrim Unplugged (by stoppingby4now)
stoppingby4now replied to stoppingby4now's question in Other Utilities Support
I had been playing around late last night with WB, then fired up Steam (client was updated), then launched Skyrim Launcher to re-download a couple SW mods...then the game wouldn't launch. I just got a small window in the upper left hand corner. I switched to WB to shut it down and got the message about sanitized mods, and it had "cleaned" Updates.esm. Odd. I tried to relaunch WB to see if I got the message again, and this time it said it couldn't find TESV.exe. So I go into my Skyrim folder. TESV.exe, Updates.esm, Update.bsa, and some other Skyrim<...>.bsa files were missing. I restores them, and was able to play again, but now I'm worried that either Skyrim Launcher or Steam removed them in preparation for an upgrade to patch 1.5. I can't think of anything that I would have done to cause them to go missing with WB or any other means. I'm leaning more towards Skyrim Launcher as the culprit. So...is there anyone here that has used Skyrim Unplugged to prevent a patch and notice any of the above files go missing? -

I'm seeing seem lines in some rocks, and nearly everything having an outline, differing between more black, and sometimes more white. Especially on some of the rocks, it looks odd. What settings are you using? -

The good thing about sending the lawyers and accounts up first is that the politicians have no one to defend them or manage their money, rendering them blind in essence. I say save them for last...make them sweat it out a bit. ... and recycling and hydroponics ... Technological equivalent of Charlie's Chocolate Factory? Cables made of liquorice anyone? OK, maybe not. First person to get hungry, there goes the Internet. -

Lawyers first. Then they can't prosecute. :P -

Awesome resources Mardread. I've been looking for more definitive information concerning such matters, but have always been disappointed. Though, one site that the first link does point to is German...he says it's easy to follow...yeah. -
The soft link needs to be in ..\common\skyrim\data pointing to the skyrim root folder. Then just create a root directory at the appropriate place in the archive containing the files you want installed in Skyrim root, i.e. alongside the textures\ folder in the archive. Huzzah! Thank you s4n! Nice 'n clean... Edit - Spoke too soon. It seems that d3d9.dll with RCRN doesn't get recognized in the root folder of the package. Everything else worked as advertised. That might be WB trying to keep you safe. I haven't tried this method yet. Hopefully faitmaker can report.

And still working... like a champ. I use the /d for any directory... Are you saying that I should drop it? I use SL most often for Dropbox. It's fine to use /D, just not in cases like the above where it creates a loop.

Bethesda's Curveballs

To semi-quote Dogma... Bethesda Developer: "You know, here's what I don't get. You now for a fact that great modders exist. You've been in their presence. You claim to support them. Yet you keep having us throw them curve balls with no warning." Bethesda Management: "I just like to @#$% with the modders, man. I just love it. I love to keep those guys on their toes." -
FYI, the Standalone version also creates compiled versions, but they are labeled with an 'o' at the end (no .pyc extension). The same thing applies here, you can just delete all of the o files and they will be regenerated. The Python version is only necessary for developers, and for the run-of-the-mill users, the Standalone version is much simpler to deal with without requiring additional product installations.

Skyrim Unplugged (by stoppingby4now)

In looking at the Wrye Bash forum on Beth, it looks like 1.5 has thrown them a curveball by changing the structure of update.esm. As I read it, they think it is the killcams. Lovely. I'm definitely glad I'm still at 1.4.27 then. -
@jomelsontanco Symbolic links in relation to files do appear to act like a shortcut, but they are still quite different. Symbolic links operate at the filesystem layer, and shortcuts operate at the application layer. Symbolic links do not have an actual file size. The file/directory they reference is in the data portion of the file descriptor. Consequently, shortcuts are a file that contain information about the target file/directory which takes up space and will eat up an entire block on disk. Shortcuts are also able to carry over icons from the target location, whereas symbolic links do not. In the case of directories, you are unable to change directories using a symbolic link, but you can use it to read/write/create files in the directory that it references. This is one thing that differs from how symbolic links work in UNIX/POSIX systems, where they can be just as troublesome as Junctions if used improperly. In any case, I had messed up the command line by including the "/D" switch (which is equivalent to creating a Junction), which I later rectified. It should not be there for a true symbolic link, and it is now working for faitmaker.

They must be finding a lot of bugs. I think wrinkly has had 3 or 4 hopeful time tables for release. -
Patch 1.5 didn't have much of a Beta phase, which kind of makes me worry. Going to wait to hear feedback before allowing the patch, then start my fresh mod-reinstall.

Patch 1.5 is out, but I'm still sitting safely at 1.4.27. How about you? -

The Wiki is now tied to MyBB for authentication so you can log-in with your forum username, and you have full edit. -
You're right...too much skimming and not enough paying attention on my part.
-
I just did a skim through. One quick comment on BCF's, I think there should be some initial up front text to explain how to get to the point of the target archive for BCF creation. Those new to WB likely won't associate that process as a requirement.

When I do a fresh install and run through the WB guide, I'm going to set that up myself. Just made this .bat script and tested it out. Placed it in my Mopy directory, then made a shortcut of it and placed it in the Mopy\Apps directory and called it 'Toggle Softlink'. Set it to run as Administrator, now I have an application launcher in WB to toggle (remove or create) the softlink with a single click.
-
I haven't even been able to look at it yet. So much to do, so little time. :P I've only played the game a few hours in the past few weeks, but am about to do a fresh install hopefully soon. I'm going to install the PDF extensions and see how the results turn out. If the quality is good, I'd say the Wiki is a good candidate for at least source control, followed with having an official PDF hosted on the Nexus.

Advice & Guidance

Information like this would also be a good candidate for the Wiki. -
Wiki Information Along with the forum, we also have a Wiki setup for maintaining guides, technical documents, and anything that can be useful for capturing information related to Skyrim and/or STEP. By default, the Wiki is closed to edits to anonymous users, but they have access to read the pages. The Wiki is now tied to the forums for authentication, meaning that you will only have one log-in for both with the same password. Session sharing is not yet implemented, so the log-in process will be separate for both. Having an account on MyBB will not grant the ability to log-in immediately. Permissions will still need to be granted, and requests for edit access to the Wiki can be placed in this forum. Only users with 30 or more mostly-productive forum posts and no negative historical conduct will be considered for wiki write permissions. One thing to note is that if you've logged into the Wiki before being granted write access, you will need to logout and login again in order for the appropriate permissions to be granted. If you have not yet checked out the Wiki (still a WIP), head on over.

I think it comes down to laziness. I've seen games support multiple versions of DirectX (9 & 10) and do a good job at it, but it certainly is easier to pick one target and stick with it.
-
It's all those XP users that are bringing us down. DirectX12 will be out with Windows 8, and 98% of the games are still primarily developed against DirectX9.

I've been curious to try something to see how it would affect performance (though I would need to get a new power supply). I was thinking of putting my older card in and set it to be dedicated to PhysX. Anyone here do this?
