SKSE launch problems when run through MO with NO mods

Question

Posted

Hi All,

So after royally messing up my game through overwriting mods I shouldn't have, I decided to start over and ditch NMM for MO. After getting all my mods re-downloaded, installed, and sorted correctly, I tried running SKSE from MO and would get through the bethesda logo and to the main screen, but whenever I'd try to load a save or start a new one the game would just hang/crash.

Figuring it was a problem with my mods, I unchecked everything but the vanilla files (I have all three dlcs) and tried running it that way, expecting I'd have to go through with the mods active in small batches until I found the source of the problem. However, the result was the same as when I had all the mods implemented, with the game just hanging/crashing when loading/starting a save.

To make sure that it wasn't the game itself, I loaded up the game through skse outside of MO and had no trouble at all. So at this point I can only assume there is some sort of problem coming from MO when I run the game, but I have no idea what it would be. Any help would be appreciated :)

Hi, Aerandor!

Have you made any changes to the .ini files in your MO profile that might cause different behaviour when launching the game from MO as opposed to only with skse_loader.exe? That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. Do you have an skse.ini that you made sure you configured correctly?

Have you installed Skyrim in your Program Files folder? If so does it make any difference if you run MO as an administrator? Also, make sure you disabled the mods in the left pane, not just their .esps when you say you disabled everything but base files.

The .ini files for the profile are identical to the ones in my documents/mygames/skyrim folder, and I have installed skyrim to a c:/games/ folder as I read at point installing it under program files can cause problems even when running as an admin. I run MO as an admin anyway just to be safe. I don't remember ever having to configure an skse.ini file before, can you tell me more about that?

Yes, everything in both the left and right panes except the dlcs has been disabled.

I'm fairly certain that skse is working fine as I can run skyrim from skse directly without any problems, and the same goes for the ENBoost. It's only hanging when I launch it from MO, which is why I think it's related to something on MO's side.

Wish there was an easy fix, believe me. Thanks for your ideas so far.

A quick search revealed these topics: herehere and here. Perhaps they can provide answers where I can not. If not, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to offer their input soon enough.  :^_^:

Unfortunately, I went through those pages and tried the ideas there, but still nothing. I was playing around with the game though to see if I could figure out anything else and I did notice this. I started a new game through skse launched from desktop, saving just after the character creation menu closes, and then went to try and load the save after launching skse through MO. Even though the save should have the exact same file load (vanilla + 3 dlcs), I still get the "this game relies on content that may no longer be available" message and then the game crashes if I proceed to load the save. One other difference I noticed was that launching skse from desktop goes through the bethesda logo before going to the main game menu, whereas launching through MO seems to skip the logo and go straight to the menu. Don't know if either of those things sheds some light on the problem, but thought it worth mentioning anyway.

Looking at the save on the Save tab in MO will tell you if anything is missing. I'd be interested to know if it detects anything missing there.

Is your MO in the Program Files directory? Is Skyrim in the Program Files directory?

According to the save, there are no missing esps or anything else, yet I still get the message. Both MO and Skyrim are located under a C:/Games folder.

Running SKSE from the desktop or from MO will show exactly the same thing.

All MO is doing is tricking the game into seeing the installed mods from its 'mods' folder, there is no functional difference between running the game with or without MO, even the memory impact is minuscule.

Can you just clarify for us, this is also happening when you start a new game, not a game from a previous save?

Check overwrite and ensure that it is empty.

You say your INIs in MO and in My Games\Skyrim are identical, yet you say the one skips the Bethesda logo and the other does not. That indicates that your INIs are indeed different. Please post your MO INIs (Puzzle button --> INI Editor). Place in spoilers:

The overwrite is indeed empty. The game hangs/crashes whether I start a new game or try to load a save, but only when SKSE is launched through MO. Here are the MO .ini files:

Can you be more specific as to what makes them messy?

I'm wondering if at this point I should backup my MO downloads and mods and reinstall both MO and SKSE to see if that fixes the problem...

Well, most of the settings you have in are invalid (i.e., they don't exist, or exist in other sections/INI files) and some of the settings simply don't do anything (were disabled by Bethesda).
