11.1 Performance Tips

EWI removed all his mods a while back but they are slowly coming back, including the new file location for his Performance ENB :
Relinked with new mod page. Now called :

( Confusingly, his old Minimal Performance ENB - Is now renamed to the above ( I think ), and he has another new Minimal ENB but no longer called Performance edition, now at https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/59726/? = Minimal ENB Final Edition )

@ Z

Also TY ^^ Only a bit of actual layout change was needed I think, the rest was minor corrections so links do not need to redirect anymore or broken tab links. Plus a bit of mod updating and new info.

Going for a coffee before I have another look, see if anything could be a better layout, but I dont think anything major needed doing really besides putting ENBoost first as a logical progression of advancement in using the ENB Binaries.

Cool. Do you know how many times I've changed those links to ENB Dev?! I think Boris is using something that saves the files in one format (.htm) and then when he edits it gets changed to a different format (.html). I don't think anyone has ever really noticed this until they try to link to the pages but it happens way too often!

Totally agree. This initially made me very apprehensive of the whole 'ENB' thing. It gave the impression of sloppiness and perhaps even the chance that these binaries may just 'up and disappear' one day. Glad to say I'm past that stage and have now gone with an ENB.

If only there was a way to have a link that checked for either extension...

Sorry for jumping in like that, very rude of me,  carry on. Oh BTW, very good guide. I'm learning a great deal about ENBs.

Has there been any discussion recently anywhere reference the new default setting for ..

ReservedMemorySizeMb=64

Just wondering because if that is a default setting, and the guide is talking about a minimum of 128 ( increasing in steps of the same value ) - For a bit more precision in adjustment the increase could probably be refined

https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:ENB#Memory

This parameter sets a buffer size for swapping geometry and textures between VRAM and system memory. The buffer will be set in VRAM; however, it will also be duplicated in the system memory used by TESV.exe as well. This means that increasing this parameter's value will result in equal increases in both VRAM and system RAM usage. The values here are measured in megabytes. For video cards with 1GB or more VRAM, start with 128 as a baseline. If stuttering persists, increase the value in increments of 128 ( 256, 384, 512, etc ) until the stuttering has ceased or is as minimal as possible with the lost value as possible. The maximum value that can be used is 1024, but be aware that whatever value is used is how much VRAM will be reserved for the swap space. This is the reason the lowest value possible without experiencing issues is recommended. Because of this parameter being system dependent, users will need to test different values to find the one which works best for their specific setup.

ReservedMemorySizeMb=(128, 256, 384, 512, 640, 768, 896, 1024)

I remember it being stated somewhere that Boris did some work on the feature and now recommends starting it out at 64 and increasing it from there. I would simply add in 64 as the lowest value and call it a day. The rest of the description is still accurate. The most common value that users seem to rest on is 512.

@alt3rn1ty

Just FYI: No need to describe changes made to any wiki page here on the forums ... what a PITA it must have been to create that post! ... all pages on the wiki have PAGE TOOLS > HISTORY link to give you a page that allows a diff compare of each edit or a series of edits. All of your changes will be shown in detail in the History page so that you don't need to explain anything again (except maybe for 'why' you changed something).

Done. At least now some people will realise that the last setting of adding 128 to take them beyond stuttering may have been more than necessary, so reducing that by 64 may be enough and the sweet spot for their system.

This is the reason the lowest value possible without experiencing issues is recommended.

Its not going to be a common case but on my minimum spec laptop with 512mb VRAM, 64mb works well here.

But then I dont have much in the way of texture sizes to be cached, for example a compressed DXT1 1024x1024 texture is only 683 kb, barely two thirds of a mb, and there arent many textures in my setup bigger than that, while the majority are smaller.

For the purposes of the S.T.E.P community I can imagine 512mb as just a cache being the average especially if those darn mega sized manholes are in use :).

Edit : Thats "Done" in response to TA

@ Z - I had multiple tabs open so just pasted into the build of that post as I went through .. But yep I realise the Wiki will have a record of changes to undo, I detailed the changes to reassure I was not just vandalising the page, the only people who have seen me methodically work through someone elses work before were the old Wrye Bash team when I was doing an interpretation of the Official documentation into an accurate but more street friendly version .. ie the Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide word smithing.

I think TA needed the reassurance with his work being meddled with, which also corroborates the individual changes comments ( easy for a quick check as to what was done where )

Then at another later date if I have time to help with something, I would be trusted ... Muahahahaha! :)

OK, that's fine then. Just wanted to make sure you knew about history and even linking to pieces of interest like diffs and anything history related that can be loaded in the browser.

Appreciate the diplomatic touch though ... you are thorough ;)

One last question on Wiki's

How / Where are the images stored ?

I notice there is an upload facility, so does it give you a filename to link to that is then associated with the page you uploaded the image file to ?

And then while editing just insert the new filename where you want the image like [[File:ENBoostINI.png]] for example

Cool, I ask because I will probably change that one graphic :

Its not correct because it includes an old setting which is no longer in [Global], Forcefakevideocard

and there is the uncertainty about whether Usepatchspeedhackwithoutgraphics - when set to true - also switches off Usedeferredrendering, so there was no need to switch it off in accordance with the Editing ENBLocal INI guide, whereas the latter would have us believe it needs to be set false for just ENBoost users ..

So if that image is for ENBoost only quickguide, then I think it should be showing as set to false. ( If the image is showing Usepatchspeedhackwithoutgraphics=true then that would indicate to me the image is for ENBoost only users presentation, to be later reversed in the instructions and images for full ENB users Quickstart guide, editing the ENBLocal.ini further down the page ) -

- Yep as necessary I want to add a different image there too because that quick start guide does not currently have one )

Here's a default ENBLocal.INI just downloaded fresh :

[PROXY]
EnableProxyLibrary=false
InitProxyFunctions=true
ProxyLibrary=other_d3d9.dll

[GLOBAL]
UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=false
UseDefferedRendering=true
IgnoreCreationKit=true

[PERFORMANCE]
SpeedHack=true
EnableOcclusionCulling=true

[MULTIHEAD]
ForceVideoAdapterIndex=false
VideoAdapterIndex=0

ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true
DisableDriverMemoryManager=false
DisablePreloadToVRAM=false
EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false
ReservedMemorySizeMb=64
VideoMemorySizeMb=2000
EnableCompression=true
AutodetectVideoMemorySize=false

[WINDOW]
ForceBorderless=false
ForceBorderlessFullscreen=false

[ENGINE]
ForceAnisotropicFiltering=true
MaxAnisotropy=16
ForceLodBias=false
LodBias=0.0
AddDisplaySuperSamplingResolutions=false
EnableVSync=false
VSyncSkipNumFrames=0

[LIMITER]

[iNPUT]
//shift

//f12
KeyUseEffect=123
//home
KeyFPSLimit=36
//num /       106
KeyShowFPS=106
//print screen

//enter

//f4

FixParallaxBugs=true
FixAliasedTextures=true
IgnoreInventory=true
FixTintGamma=true
RemoveBlur=false
FixSubSurfaceScattering=true

FixCursorVisibility=true

And here's the image in question as it currently is :

ENBoostINI.png

I think for ENBoost users Quick guide that should be True / False / True / no forcefakevideocard

And the opposite settings for the first two showing for ENB Quickstart image False / True / True / and again no forcefakevideocard

I am not going to do the above tonight, getting too late, but when I can will pop in .. Going to leave the suggestion for you all to say yey or nay to first, I guess changing images on the wiki especially if they are the same name will overwrite the previous stored image, so I need to get those right without mistakes.

This was recently removed.

This is not in question. Keith and I already posted on it. If you don't set UseDefferedRendering to false, then some of its code still runs (this is at least the last word we've both heard/read). Better safe than sorry. The ENBLocal INI part of the guide is not as accurate as the ENBoost section because it was created more recently. Follow whatever the ENBoost section says.

If you visit the image's page on the wiki, you can upload a new image using the same name.

Done - New graphic for ENBoost Quickstart, and an equivalent for the ENB Quickstart which previously did not have one

--------------------

Also edited the ENB Quickstart : Where you had the line ..

6. Setup the enblocal.ini

  • Open the Skyrim folder and then open the enblocal.ini in a text editor (Notepad++ is recommended).

That was immediately followed by

  • Find the section named [GLOBAL] and ensure the line, UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=false is set to false.
    • This line if set to true will disable the graphic effects of ENBSeries and only use the memory management feature known as ENBoost.

Now it looks like this with a graphic that was previously positioned wrongly further down the description :

Setup the enblocal.ini:

  1. Open the Skyrim folder and then open the enblocal.ini in a text editor (Notepad++ is recommended). ENBLocalFolder.png
  2. Find the section named [GLOBAL] and ensure the line, UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=false is set to false.
    • This line if set to true will disable the graphic effects of ENBSeries and only use the memory management feature known as ENBoost.

IE probably originally intended to be positioned the same as per ENBoost quickstart, but lost in translation to ENB Quickstart
