Insanely low FPS after updating to Windows 8.1

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi all!

So I've always been reluctant to udate my computer to Windows 8.1, but nevertheless, I did update just a few minutes ago. I am now running an updated version of an already horrible system.

So I went into my game. I have been wanting to see a true vanilla FPS, so I created a new profile and sat the preset in the launcher to "Medium", and ran the game through Mod Organizer. I then launched the game, and in the cart into sequence I had a measly ~10 FPS. I mean. Unmodded Skyrim with "Medium" preset, running 10 FPS.

I checked enblocal.ini to see if I somehow managed to set the limit to 10 FPS, or if the update messed up the files. No such luck. It appears that my PC is now running unmodded Skyrim at 10 FPS.

I honestly have no idea if there is a conflict between Windows 8.1 and Skyrim. I haven't tried reinstalling Skyrim, but I am not aware of any calibration done between the operating system and Skyrim.

My specs are:

GeForce GTX 760m 2GB VRAM

i7-4702MQ 2.2Ghz 2.8 Turbo

8GB RAM

Running on a 5400 RPM HDD

Laptop PC.

Now this makes absolutely no sense. Before I updated to Windows 8.1, I was running 25-35 FPS with a fully modded STEP:Extended plus a lot of non-STEP/STEP Pack gameplay mods, all textures except HiRes DLC was capped at 1k. Now I'm running 10 FPS unmodded with only "Medium" preset, with no HiRes DLC. I unticked the .esp and unticked the .bsa in the archive tab.

Help!

~Sincerely

If it changed after updating the OS, it's almost certainly not due to ENB or Skyrim-specific settings or files. I would check your display driver, your display settings and even your power settings perhaps. Confirm that Windows is still using your dedicated GPU rather than the Intel HD GPU. You could also try upgrading/re-installing your GPU drivers.

Well ModOrganzer.exe and skse_loader.exe was specifically set to use the integrated graphics, although I don't know if they matter, or if the SkyrimLauncher.exe and TESV.exe matters. Anyway I sat them all to use the GeForce one, though I don't have a chance of testing at the moment.

The integrated graphics is the likely culprit. If telling it to use the Nvidia card doesn't fix it use display driver uninstaller in safe mode and reinstall the Nvidia driver and see if that fixes it.

Add MO, SKSE, and TEST.exe to the GPU list. Also use the injector version of ENB or the Optimus Fix with the wrapper version.

After that, restart your PC.

Well it's all subjective I suppose. But it sucks that Microsoft completly neglected non-touch user. I loathe touch, and I loathe Metro even more.

Furthermore, Microsoft even had the audacity to blame PC manufacturers for the faillure of Windows 8. Although that's a non-sequitar.

I disagree that Windows 8.1 sucks. I like it. Just don't upgrade and use incorrect drivers. Not all computers can handle Windows 8.1.

Its not a question of Preference or Style. Windows 8 is bad. Period. It is coded poorly. Its buggy as hell.

Almost everything is a matter of subjectivity, including Window 8. Windows 8 might be bad, yet there are people who still fancy it. Like the Twilight movies.

I liked Vista when it first came out, but we all know it was horrible. Win 7 is the new Win XP.

When you have a laptop with Integrated graphics, it is best practice to use drivers from the manufacturer (because they often make a lot of change to the driver, when you have a dedicated graphics card).

Furthermore is your bios up to date?
