Question

For 'moderators' and beyond it is possible to set 'mark solved' for a response to a certain post. The post/thread then gets a green tag with the text 'answered' and when opening the thread you see 'the best answer'. It is not possible to do this for the original post. This makes sense but there are situations where this is suboptimal.

  • Sometimes a user posts a thread, finds the solution himself and puts the solution in the original thread (post #1) by editing it.
  • In the past when trying to persuade users to use the S.T.E.P. MO forum instead of the Nexus forum I recreated the Nexus post on the S.T.E.P. and answered it. When a user does not respond to this answer I can't select 'Mark solved'.

The only workaround I've found is to set a tag with text 'answered' in the original post. Drawback is that is does not get a green 'answered' tag in front of the thread listing.

Question: Are the answered tag set by 'mark solved' and adding a tag 'answered' in the original post considered the same. Ie when sorting it?

As an English teacher I find marking the only answer to somebody's question as the "best" answer illogical as superlatives are to be used to identify one out of a group of 3 or more choices. "Resolved" or just "Solved" would be better.

Anyhow, semantics aside, it seems a logical workaround would be to make sure the answer / solution is not given in the OP. For Wolverine's examples, simply copy paste the question from the Nexus comments thread into the OP and then give the solution in a reply.

Perhaps, but again, the intent is for posters to ask questions and await answers to their questions, then they subjectively mark the "best answer" to their original question. This is a nice way to isolate the "OP solution" to a single post and call out that post above the OP. Using another term could be better in many cases but not all. It depends on the OP.

Part of the reason why folks edit OP's with answers is to make it easy for others to quickly find that answer. The "Best Answer" features removes the need for that, so it's just a matter of folks getting used to that. Training, training, training.

Can I extend the 'mark solved' button to F&L NV support forum so the answered tag pops up. I want to start moving some more of the discussions about problems to that sub and would like that button for visibility.
