Question

Posted (edited)

I am following the fear and loathing in NV guide step by step, and trying to familiarize myself with all of the modding tools for New Vegas. When I got to the early step that required me to run Mod Organizer and set a profile to "automatic archive invalidation", I get the following error:

"Failed to change archive invalidation state: failed to modify ini file [Access is denied [5]]"

I have moved my game installation out of program files but not into a user account for windows. I have not yet installed a single mod, just the vanilla game and other things like LOOT and FNVEdit. I'm also getting error messages when I try to delete other profiles I made to try to figure out what was wrong, and it seems there is very little the program is letting me do at all. There is no explanation for this in the STEP guide, and the internet doesn't seem to offer a solution for a Mod Organizer problem that happens immediately after installation like this.

What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: It also apparently is rejecting my Nexus username and password, even though the Nexus site accepts both just fine. I seriously haven't been able to get this program to do anything successfully since installing it.

The default Fallout.ini in My Games / falloutnv is write protected. When first run MO will copy the ini files from that location. Go into your MO profile directory and make sure that Fallout.ini is not read only.

It was the second thing I tried, doesn't change anything.

After you moved the game did you go to the new Fallout New Vegas folder and start the game using the FalloutNVLauncher.exe? You need to do this once to establish the correct registry keys for FNV before starting the game through MO. I expect you did this, but I mentioned it just in case.

Also, make sure that the permissions for the game folder and the folder used for Mod Organizer allow full control by all users.

Oh wow, I am such an idiot. When I moved the game out of program files, I went in and unmarked all the ini files as "read only" so they could be modified, but I forgot to do it to the entire FalloutNV folder itself. Apparently windows resets it to read only when you move it. The archive invalidation problem seems to be resolved now.

I'm still having trouble with the autologin for Nexus, though. MO doesn't like my username/password even though it works fine on the Nexus site itself.

EDIT: system restart seems to have fixed this login issue for whatever reason. I'm choosing not to question it.

Thanks for the prompt help, mods.
