i have been around to grow up with some of the oldest computers dating as far back as the zx spectrum and comador.

Whats your favorite game of all time and what are your reasons for liking it so much, does not matter how old it is, not talking about graphics here just the game play.

Mine is Resident Evil 4... the graphics where poor but it's the only game i have completed multiples times and enjoyed it everytime.

It is because of this game i became a modder.

Mine has to be Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. This game was absolutely amazing! The game-play was good as you'd expect from most Ace Combat games; however, this particular release had an amazing story attached to it. The story pulled me into the game so much that I felt that I "needed" to play because the characters of the game "needed" me. It pulled me in so much that I actually had tears in my eyes the first time I played it through. That is rare for a game! I played it through many times and that same feeling and getting sucked into the story happened every time. I was crushed when the PS3 took away backwards compatibility and could no longer play this game. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon was a joke in comparison.

Only three other games have sucked me into them in such a way, but to a lesser degree: Final Fantasy VIII, Wild Arms and Zelda: A Link to the Past ...in that order.

Final Fantasy VIII was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and though I am a fan forever, I have not enjoyed a FF release since as much as I enjoyed FFVIII. It was 4 disks on the Playstation and well worth the 100+ hours I put into playing it. FFVIII had the challenge of the series as well as a story that I would say only comes in second in the series to FFVII (from what I've read of FFVII story). I also highly enjoyed the card mini-game in FFVIII and spend more hours than I should have playing it.

Wild Arms was a great game during it's time. It has a good story and the game-play was well put together and could be compared to FFVII.

Zelda: A Link to the Past is from my childhood on the SNES. I played this game for hours upon hours and never grew bored of it.

As for PC games, the Mass Effect series has been thoroughly enjoyable and I would say it's one of my favorites since I've been gaming on the PC. This series would only come in second to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (1 & 2). Both had great stories behind them as well.

You've might have noticed, for me to thoroughly enjoy a game it was to be coupled with a good story. The only exception to this in the above might be Zelda: A Link to the Past but back then as a child, that was probably a good story to me.

Probably have to go with the Metroid Prime series.

Link to the Past was awesome. Probably the best game on SNES except for Super Metroid. As a kid the Metroid series was one of my favorite and even today I play the Prime trilogy on Dolphin.

Nintendo is easily the most influential company in video games, and I don't even think there is a close second. N64 era was so much fun, from Mario to Zelda to anything from Rare. Mostly Nintendo published games, but they were still great. Gamecube was just carrying the torch with Prime and Windwaker and RE4. I think if you look back that RE4 is actually the last really great title Capcom has released. Maybe Dead Rising or Street Fighter 5, but those were good games not quite GOTY material like RE4.

Gotta like the KOTOR games. Bioware just knows how to write fun RPG stories. Balder's Gate->KOTOR->Mass Effect->DA:O. All really fun games with fun mechanics. Hopefully they don't mess up DA:Inquisition.

I also have to give a shout out to the heyday of twitch shooters. Quake, Unreal, CS all sucked away part of my life. They were much more fun with bad graphics IMO due to the fast paced nature that was part of it. The focus was on fun and not reflections, shadows, realism....

...Wow. I own so many old games (console and PC), but one game that I actually really remember playing and loving was, well, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. In fact, I still have my original disk for it in my computer room. For console games, I did really like the first Paper Mario game when I played it. That's what I remember from my younger times. I think we also had KOTR - and, well, I like playing that in present day and age.

EDIT: Oh, thanks for reminding me, Ess. I really, really liked the first Metroid Prime when I played it.

Your post reminded me of Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age: Origins. RPGs fulfill me. Haha! Both were great game with great stories. I never got to finish DA:O. Maybe I'll attempt that in part of my free time.

Those first-person shooters filled part of my time as well. We had a lan party group in high school that played Quake, Half-life, Counter Strike, Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. Good times indeed!

Additionally, I forgot to give my shout out to Freelancer. I still have this game and still play it on occasion. The model graphics old but the space scenes are still beautiful and the gameplay can be additive. I count this as a pre-Eve Online game.

yup, Quake 1 was great! real 3D, online multiplayer, great controls and still alive (Darkplaces etc.)

It was also a very bold move for id software to release their games source under an open licence.

Baldurs Gate 1+2 were also the pinnacle of RPG. But on the other hand there is Planescape Tornment. Haven't finished it yet, altough I'm not sure if I want it to end ;)

I've been playing Diablo II for the past couple days. Does that count?

yup that counts, i made old games stick out a bit because i thought putting up games on its own we would have posts with only new games..

i like zelda a lot, link to the past is my favorite. the worse thing they did though was turn it 3D... it would have been top banana in 3D if they had kept the 2D perspective...

Final fantasy VII is my all time favorite been a fan for years and im upset that there has not been a next generation release on it... they did the CGI film based after what happens in the game but i think many FFVII  fans and crying out for a remake...

The really old games like alien breed that i use to love have been released with nex gen graphics, they even kept a simular camera FOV so i was very happy..

I actually forgot to mention one of the all-time greatest games, one of those that are so good you might never play anything else ever again. Yeah, System Shock 2 was that game. Cyber-punk and madness at it's best. I should mention Deus Ex too, but I never got into that like System Shock.

I'm actually kind of ashamed that I forgot about it considering how much time I played it. Still can't believe that was 14 years ago. Good thing guys like Vurt share my love of SS2 and have given it a proper facelift.

One of my gaming confessions is that I've never actually played anything from Blizzard and haven't played any Final Fantasy game. The blizzard one I do feel bad about, but my feelings on some JRPGs is that the only things that should have 14 sequels is porn.

I have a few lifetime oldschool favs!

8-bit favs:

1. Bruce Lee

2. Spitfire 40

3. Zorro

4. Robbo (Polish game, you guys probably never heard of it)

5. Road Race

16-bit favs:

1. DUNE (the very first one from Virgin Interactive, adventure/strategy one) and I think this is my MOST FAVOURITE GAME of all times! In fact I still play it sometimes, love it!

2. Elite series. X-Rebirth? Don't make me laugh...

3. Exequo Ishar series and Transarctica (what a game concept! One of my biggest dreams is that someone will remake this gem ones...)

4. Lucas Arts adventure games (love them all)

5. Exequo - Legend of Kyrandia & Lure of The Temptress (the first game ever to introduce NPCs that lived their ordinary lives, aka daily schedules)

32-bit favs (talking oldschool here, let's say 20th century only):

1. Elite series

2. Interstate '76 (The atmosphere! The Mad Max'esque feel to it, ahhhhh!)

3. Darklands (first sandbox ever!)

4. Duke Nukem 3D. For "What are you waiting for? Christmas?" and other verbal abuse he gave to everyone around.

5. Diablo (changed everything)

"only things that should have 14 sequels is porn." - LOL

Max Payne 1 & 2.

I used to make evenings of playing them, as if I was sitting down to read a good book.

Still haven't beaten 3, but one thing I'm disappointed in was the moving cut-scenes. I enjoyed the artistic ambiance of the comic-strip like cut-scenes.

Played Diablo II for many years as well, probably way more than I should have.
