frihyland Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 The official announcement of its existence. I'm still reeling from all the technical detail, oh wait its just a graphic... of vaporware
Bealdwine Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Lol, I still have high hopes for this... but I have deployed the safety net, double checked the parachute, and inflated the crash bag, just in case ;)
Vond Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Lol, I still have high hopes for this... but I have deployed the safety net, double checked the parachute, and inflated the crash bag, just in case ;) That's the only way to prepare for any promising MMO tbh. ;)

torminater Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 it just really reminds me of lord of the rings online... :/
torminater Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Well, just to give more flesh to my earlier comment: It has great potential... a huge potential. Actually the potential is so big that it's going to be a disappointment however good it will ever be developped. This is pretty sad, though. TES has never been intended to become a MMO. It will probably end as another WoW duplicate with all the things that made TES unique removed to fit better into the genre. I just hope that they'll recover fast from their MMO-efforts as I would like to see TES survive for the next decades. If it should against all expectations become the MMO of the decade or sth like that I hope that they'll not let down the single player RPG TES has so far "grown up" with.
Bealdwine Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 No real worries about the MMO competing with 'normal' TES as they are being developed by different teams - Bethesda will continue with the solo games. I actually have a lifetime sub with LotRO and enjoyed it immensely - still pop in now and again but wasn't very happy with the whole Free 2 Play change (although it is probably one of the best F2P schemes running in MMO world). Had grave doubts about it originally as a franchise and a story driven world, but it was handled very effectively I thought. Unfortunately the current MMO market has moved in directions that don't emphasise the aspects of RPG that interest me... which does give me worries about the nature of the TES beast we will be offered. Only time will tell. Strangely I'm not a WoW basher, I didn't play it for long as I was already spoilt by MMORPGs more to my taste but I did quite like it for what it is (think: like comparing TES to Diablo II ;) ). If WoW has a major fault it tends to be its community which has driven away more 'mature' players than I care to mention. Anyway far off topic and not something I want to get into deep discussions about. I just hope that TESO has been conceived in light of what makes the solo games so good and not what makes modern MMOs attractive to kiddies (and accountants). [Don't take offence anyone - I know maturity is not a number :) ...but I do seem to have developed a bit of a fetish about accountants, odd that... ]
Vond Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Having seen parts of the article, I am quite intrigued. I like that they are going the way of EverQuest/UO etc with public dungeons rather than having *everything* instanced. But we'll see, I'll remain sceptical. :)

I hate to say it but a lot will come down to the Engine they finally use as many people will expect something akin to the modeling and graphic detail of the solo games and not give gameplay a chance if it fails to impress. The nature of a solo RPG and an MMORPG are quite different in some fundamental ways and those who have only ever played solo games will find it a bit of a 'culture shock', a LOT will ride on the nature of the Community for the game.
z929669 Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 MMO | solo-multiplayer RPG As long as there are people that want it, there will be a market for it (and I hope that they deliver!)
stoppingby4now Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I've enjoyed the team aspect of MMO's, but they've mainly gone south making them boring and pointless (for me). Though I did try out the GW2 beta this past weekend and really enjoyed it, at least in the beginning levels. But the one thing that MMO's just can't compete with in a single player RPG is graphics, particularly when the game can be modded. That's a big win. What I would actually like to see is a hybrid between the two. I don't care about connecting to a server where hundreds or thousands of folks are running about. But something that allows for modding the game, but with the ability to connect with a few friends on a private server would be awesome.
z929669 Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Yep, that is my point. I'd like to play in multiplayer mode with a few friends using my local modded game.
