Error: Cannot open/create file / The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

Question

Hello.

I tried generating LODs for SSE and I'm getting this at the end of the process and doesn't create the DynDOLOD.esp...

[00:31:14.641] Waiting for LODGenx64.exe to finish ...
[00:31:19.645] Waiting for LODGenx64.exe to finish ...
[00:31:24.650] Waiting for LODGenx64.exe to finish ...
[00:31:29.656]
[00:31:29.656] Exception in unit functions line 379: Cannot open file "E:\Games Instalate\Skyrim Special Edition Mods\SSEEdit 3.2-164-3-2\Logs\LODGen_SSE_Tamriel_log.txt". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

the thing is that LODGenx64.exe is not finishing yet and DynDOLOD is trying to read the log that is used by LODGenx64.exe... what can i do to delay reading the log until it finishes generating lods?

thanks.

Do not mix the DynDOLOD standalone installation with old versions or an xEdit installation.

It seems LODGenx64.exe takes a very long long time to complete a worldspace - which is perfectly fine, it can happen.

Please update to this test version and see if it behaves correctly when it gives up waiting for LODGenx64.exe to finish.

In case there are still problems, edit DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD Worlds.pas in notepad and change the value of 600 in line #658 to something higher. It is the number of seconds it waits.

This version worked like a charm and finished saving the esp.

LODGenx64.exe took a long time to complete a worldspace because i was generating ultra trees.

thanks again.

Hi, I've been getting a consistent error on 2.38 for Oldrim, the old message about file being used by another process:

[00:09:50.087]    Creating atlas textures Z:\DyndoLOD Output\Textures\DynDOLOD\LOD\DynDOLOD_Atlas_JaphetsFollyWorld.dds from 11 textures

[00:09:50.140]
[00:09:50.701]
[00:09:50.701]    Exception in unit userscript line 326: Cannot create file "C:\Users\Atardecer\Desktop\DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD\cache\DynDOLOD_TES5_japhetsfollyworld_textures_used.txt". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

Thought I remember having this problem when leaving FasterCreate=1 in the ini, but it happens with it off too (though I manage to get further, usually ends at Solstheim). I've seen this error message before googling around but couldn't find what I'm doing wrong.

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

The OS is preventing overwriting/access because the file is still being accessed by something else. A reboot typically clears that up in case you can not close or kill the other process in task manager.

If a reboot does not fix it, it typically is UAC or antivirus interfering.

Thanks. I'm on 2.40 and still having the problem (getting to line 267 now). A reboot sometimes clears it but not always. I don't know whats changed with my system, at least nothing I know of. Been running Dyndolod fine for years but just started getting this from 2.38 onwards. Cant find any lingering processes to kill so dont know where else to look (UAC is off). TexGen runs fine 100% of the time. Will try pausing Kaspersky.

EDIT: no luck turning off anti-virus.

Not sure why you believe Bruma is causing a problem? Look closely at your log what the error is: The LODGen_TES5_Tamriel.txt file is being blocked by another process. Only run one DynDOLOD process at a time.

Because the files it mentioned before Dyndolod stopped working were all from Bruma. That's why I copied all those lines. I see now that those lines have nothing to do with the error.

But I was only running one DynDOLOD process.

Even after restarting my PC and then only opening mod manager to run dyndolod once it would still return that error and stop.  No clue why it worked after I just tried again and again.

The installation instructions also say to not install DynDOLOD into special windows folders like Program Files x86 or into game folder, because of UAC or anti virus - which are also other processes that can block access to files/folders. Running as admin may help go around such problems.

If it went through eventually, nothing was preventing DynDOLOD from creating files anymore and all should be fine.

I did set it up to run as admin.

And yes it did go through. And I just tried it again just to see if it would work and it worked again. Thanks for your help!

I'm getting this error when running DynDOLOD 32bit:

Exception in unit userscript line 307: Cannot create file "E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim\DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\Export\LODGen_TES5_JaphetsFollyWorld.txt". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

I've tried a few different solutions I've found on here, like resetting the DynDOLOD_TES5.ini by grabbing a fresh one from the download, clearing the Edit Scripts cache and pausing my AV when the program is running to make sure that doesn't interfere.

I'm using Mod Organizer Classic so I can't test the 64bit version, and I'm using the latest version of DynDOLOD (2.42).

I had the same error when running TexGen, but just running it again worked. With DynDOLOD it doesn't always stop at the same spot, but it always stops.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ok, so deactivating the mod that was being processed before the error made it work. I don't know why that mod, a merge of 4 house mods, would throw an exception as it has gone through the DynDOLOD process several times before. At any rate, it worked now without that mod activated for some reason

The log you upload has two runs and both times the error was

Cannot create file LODGen_TES5_DLC01FalmerValley.txt". The file can not be accessed because it is used by another process

Cannot create file LODGen_TES5_Blackreach.txt". The file can not be accessed because it is used by another process

When running DynDOLOD only run one instance at a time. Verify that UAC, antivirus or any other third party program is not blocking access to folders/files.

From the manual: From the DynDOLOD Standalone archive copy the content of the 'DynDOLOD' folder [..] into a new 'DynDOLOD' folder outside of special OS folders like 'Programs Files' or 'Program Files (x86)', the SteamApps or game folders and Mod Organizers virtual file structure. Do not mix with old versions or xEdit installation.

I assume you mean HomesMerge.esp. It has nothing to do with another program blocking access to a log file. There is no use randomly picking a plugin name from some other parts of the log.
