Question

All of the sudden started CTD out of nowhere. I have 300+ mods and I was disabling them one by one while looking for help via Nexus. It stopped crashing once I removed a set of mods (lore-worthy mods. Apparently if I had more than 3 of them installed, it crashed my game at the logo) —All was right with the world for a few hours when all of the sudden when I loaded a Save (via MO) and the majority of my meshes and textures are vanilla but not all of them. SKSE and ENBoost was active though.

Side Note: I noticed was when I load saves Mod Configuration Menu MCM gives me notifications that mods are being loaded in the upper left of the screen. I thought this was curious because I’ve only seen this happen a long time ago when I first started my play-through and I have never see it happen after.

Things I’ve tried so far:

  • I've uninstalled and re-installed MO
  • Disabled and re-enabled my mods, plugins, etc. in an attempt to get things working again.
It's pretty much identical to the issue that happened here: https://forum.step-project.com/topic/12442-mo-not-loading-my-mods/?do=findComment&comment=211627. I guess this was addressed in a Windows Update but I am using the latest build (Windows build 1699.98). As for ModOrganizer, I'm using MO 1.3.11 from Nexus.

Another note, I was previously on the Windows 10 Insider’s Program to get the 10/17/2017 VRAM fix update early, but I immediately quit the program once I got that update.

Mod list attached (upside down for some reason MO lists it like that)

Does using a blank profile with just vanilla assets remove the issue of CTD?

Nothing you have described so far makes me think this is a MO issue specifically. 300+ mods means you may be close to, if not over, the plugin limit which would mean you will crash regardless of the manager used.

On a side note you have a lot of mods that appear to be installed manually, ie. outside of MO's control, (those mods listed as *Unmanaged:) and these may be trying to load textures/meshes that MO is now not controlling directly which may account for your different assets showing in game.

Not sure what you are trying to describe with the MCM. Any mod with an MCM menu will display a notification.

The CTD isnt an issue anymore. It stopped once I got rid of the Lore-Worthy mods. Now almost all the mods I have in ModOrganizer are not loading despite being enabled in MO

The Unmanaged mods are ones I've gotten from Steam Workshop. Would you recommend placing them in 'ModOrganizer/Mods/' ?

With regards to the MCM notifications, I only got them if I started the game for the first time after I had just installed a mod with an MCM menu. Once I'd make a save after that, then loaded that particular save, I would no longer receive notifications for that already installed mods. Now, whenever I load any of those saves, notifications are displayed for all mods with MCM menus as if I had just installed them. That's never happened until now.

I handle mods from Steam by getting Steam to download the mods into the Skyrim/data folder and immediately unsubscribe from these mods so Steam won't attempt to download them again in the future. I then ZIP each mod (foo.esp+foo.bsa) and move these somewhere safe (like a mod archive folder or Mod Organizer's downloads folder) and delete the files from the Skyrim/data folder. Once this is complete, I go into Mod Organizer and install these as regular mods so they are now managed by Mod Organizer.

Thanks, I'm in the process of doing this right now... Could this be the problem why MO isn't loading my mods all of the sudden?

No, I doubt this is the reason Mod Organizer isn't loading all of your mods but it may cause other issues. You really don't want anything other than the vanilla DLCs in the data folder. I suggest following GrantSP's instructions to narrow down the issues you are having. His first step is to ensure the basics are working.

Good to know.

I cleaned up the Data folder and put all the unmanaged mods under MO (minus the vanilla DLCs).

There's no CTD with the Blank profile. Actually there's no more CTD with any of the profiles I've created. There hasn't been since I got rid of a set of 5 mods called 'Lore-Worthy'.

I just can't figure out why MO isn't loading any of the mods I have anymore

I tried to start up again with a blank profile using MO with all my other saves and they startup ok so I think the CTD is pretty much gone. Also, I took pics of the screen. I keep feeling like I wasn't explaining it right.

Here's my normal MO profile and mods list (The error in the top right corner is just saying I have files in the overwrite folder):

This is after the logo screen when I'm selecting a save to load:

....and the message I get when I'm trying to load one of my saves (different than the blank profile message*):

Then after I click 'Yes' and the save loads. Here's a few shots of those MCM notifications I get when I load any of my previous saves:

Finally, this is the error message I get after loading a save using my blank profile on MO (The save loads without a crash):

... I really hope the pics can provide more clarity. Let me know if you have any more questions or suggestions. I'm really at a loss here   ::(:

Don't bother trying to use saves from your modded game in the blank profile, it will complain of missing plugins and/or objects (meshes & textures).

I cannot believe you have a save game with the game missing Skyrim.esm. The game should just fail to load as nothing can be loaded to initialise the assets for a vanilla game.

You'll have to consider all your previous saves as no longer usable and just start afresh.

It will stink starting over and wasting those 200+ hours... but I'm more worried about not knowing what happened because it could happen again. Is there anything I can do to try and find out what happened or what may have caused this?

You have a ton of mods, and saves will need to have exactly the same load in the same order to avoid issues. It's not impossible but it will need a bit of work to do so.

Curious as to why you're only now using MO when you've obviously been playing this modded game for some time. You have a lvl 89 character! You don't get there in a few hours.

MO 1.3.11 has been used by 1000's of users for many months now with no issues, you are not likely to see what you have described if you mod your game using MO from the start.

FINALLY! I made it a bit of a mission but I figured it out. Looks like it was an issue with Java issue. I installed a mod that required me to run Java to create a plugin patch. So I ran the Java script through MO. Not sure how it messed it up because it was working fine for a while or what not, but apparently that plugin being enabled is what caused the issue. Makes sense now too because when it was processing in the java screen, I could see it processing all my mods. Anyhow, I disabled the patch and everything works fine again. Side Note: I don't know why but now Java doesn't work on my computer at all but that's a whole separate issue i'm not even worried about.
