Mod organiser ini editing following STEP CORE guide and unexpected warning messages

Cloudlander

Question

Hi all

UPDATE: Argggghhh. Just noticed that the Users>My Documents > My Games> Skyrim folder has skse in. I must have missed deleting the folder last time. So I just uninstalled Skyrim again I assume I'll need to repeat all the STEP CORE steps up to 1.D1? I'll leave the below post in case any of it is still relevant.

I'll make sure everything is deleted this time.

Orginal post below

I'm relatively new to all this so please bare with me.

I'm trying to create the full STEP Core installation and following the STEP CORE guide to the letter.

(system specs at the bottom of the post)

Background

After trying to somewhat cack handedly mod skryim myself I figured I'd use STEP CORE to learn the process and make my own alterations when I understood things better.

Anyway as I said I've been trying to follow STEP CORE as closely as possible, reading the detailed instructions, reading the utility readme files etc.

I uninstalled skyrim (and deleted old saves and ini files)  and steam then reinstalled steam to a new directory C:\Steam and then downloaded skyrim.

I've got to section 1.D1 and started looking at ini editing but I'm a bit confused.

Firstly a couple of unexpected warning messages have popped up at the bottom of  Mod organiser. The Log is below

It's the "unexpected" messages that worry me.

I haven't installed any mods yet though just the tools in the utility section so where have these come from? Or is it nothing to worry about?

The second part is using the configurator in MO. If it'll reduce the chances of me making mistakes I'd rather use that but it seems you can't quite do everything through it so am I better off using the ini editor in Mod Organizer instead?

Is there a more indepth tutorial on mod organiser and editing the inis with it?

I searched the forum and this thread provided some answers but I'm still feeling unsure.

And either way I still want to know about those warning messages. I don't want to get another few hours in and find out I messed up a vital step early on.

Thanks for any help you can give. I can see the community has put a huge amount of work into STEP so sorry if I'm asking about stuff that's already been covered.

Here's the MO Guide.

Sounds like you have a lot of rogue parameters and edits to your INIs.

I've been away from Skyrim for about a year, and have decided to play it again.  Installed Skyrim, ran it from the launcher to create the .ini files, installed Mod Organizer and I have the EXACT same jumbled, screwed up .ini error messages as Cloudlander.

How in the heck did this happen?  Some errors are just crazy, with sections not only wrong, but even being in the wrong .ini.  I don't remember having anything like this happen the last time I set up Skyrim.  These .ini's are a full blown mess.  They were supposed to be created by the game when we first ran Skyrim, so we haven't created this mess. Skyrim automatically created these .ini files, so how in the heck are things so wrong?  Even to the point of sections being in the wrong .ini file?

As you can see, my errors are exactly the same as Cloudlander's:

[D] unknown ini setting fBrightLightColorB

[D] unknown ini setting fBrightLightColorG

[D] unknown ini setting fBrightLightColorR

[D] iRadialBlurLevel in wrong ini file (skyrimprefs.ini, should be skyrim.ini)

[D] unknown ini setting iShadowSplitCount

[D] iAdapter in wrong ini file (skyrimprefs.ini, should be skyrim.ini)

[D] iPresentInterval in wrong ini file (skyrimprefs.ini, should be skyrim.ini)

[D] unknown ini setting bMouseAcceleration

[D] unexpected section NavMesh in skyrimprefs.ini

[D] bDecals in wrong ini file (skyrimprefs.ini, should be skyrim.ini)

[D] bSkinnedDecals in wrong ini file (skyrimprefs.ini, should be skyrim.ini)

[D] uMaxSkinDecals in wrong ini file (skyrimprefs.ini, should be skyrim.ini)

[D] unknown ini setting uMaxSkinDecalsPerActor

[D] unexpected section BlurShaderHDR in skyrimprefs.ini

[D] unexpected section BlurShader in skyrimprefs.ini

Wait a minute.....I think I've found the issue.  It's the profile!  When I use my default profile, I have no errors.  But I created a new profile called "Vanilla No Mods", and it's that profile that has all the crazy .ini errors.  So, made my new Vanilla No Mods profile active, ran Skyrim Launcher through Mod Organizer.  Quit Skyrim, quit Mod Organizer, and when I reopened Mod Organizer with the Vanilla No Mods profile active, I had no more crazy .ini errors.   Life is good again, and I can finish setting up my tools in Mod Organizer.

So....was I supposed to carry over my .ini files from the default profile when I created a new profile, or am I supposed to make new .ini files every time I create a new profile?  Guess I need to read some more and find out.  Obviously, I missed something in the steps involved in creating a new profile.

Whenever you create a new profile (instead of copying one), you end up with a default set of INI files from MO.

Thanks, I didn't quite understand how that worked. To try it out, I just clicked on copy (for the first time) and saw that it then asks for a new name.  Now this makes perfect sense, and it's perfectly logical.

Edit: "Select "Vanilla Skyrim" then click [Copy]."  It was right in front of my face, reading FAIL on my part.  LOL

Thanks TechAngel85!  You guys at STEP are just awesome.  And you guys have the patience of a Saint.  Dealing with us can be tough.

Sometimes I get to reading support threads (both for knowledge and their entertainment value) and I don't know how you could possibly have the patience to help with some of the questions and user induced problems you deal with.  Every other post starts with "I followed the instructions exactly..."  and that's when I would say, no you didn't, or you wouldn't be having problems.  LOL  But not you guys, you are always so helpful and polite, I don't know how you do it.  But I'm certainly glad you do!

My favorite today was a user that "followed the instructions exactly to set up the SKSE memory patch" in MO, but wondered why when he started Skyrim from NMM that his memory patch wasn't working!  I laughed till I was about to cry.  But you guys helped him and never once suggested that he might be better off buying a console. Just amazing patience and dedication.  It would drive me to drink.
